Abstract

A personal communications system has a plurality of personal communications units defining a network. The personal communications units are configured to send and receive digital communications among one another via the network. A wireless interface adaptor further defines the network and is configured to function as a repeater. The personal communications units are configured to cooperate with the wireless interface adaptor when the wireless interface adaptor is available. The wireless interface adaptor coordinates access of each personal communications unit to at least one other personal communications unit. The personal communications units are further configured to cooperate with one another to effect communications therebetween when no wireless interface adaptor is available.

Claims

1. A multi mode personal communication system comprising:

a) a plurality of personal communication units (PCU'"'"'s), each PCU being configured for;

     1) network mode communication and;

     2) autonomous (non-networked) mode communication;

b) a universal adaptor interface (UAI) in communication with each of a plurality of the PCU'"'"'s during network mode communications, the UAI being configured to receive PCU uplink information from a plurality of PCU'"'"'s and to transmit UAI downlink information in the form of a composite signal receivable by a plurality of PCU'"'"'s, the composite signal including information separately addressable to each of a plurality of PCU'"'"'s; and

c) said PCU'"'"'s further being configured to receive PCU uplink information from non-networked PCU'"'"'s and forwarding uplink information from the non-networked PCU'"'"'s to the UAI in the PCU uplink information from a networked PCU.

2. The personal communication system as recited in claim 1 wherein the networked PCU'"'"'s and the UAI are synchronized such that the PCU uplink occurs during a first time interval and the UAI downlink occurs during a second time interval.

3. The multi mode communication system as recited in claim 2 wherein the networked PCU'"'"'s are further configured such that autonomous mode transmissions occur during a third time interval.

4. The multi mode personal communication system as recited in claim 3 wherein the PCU'"'"'s are further configured to recognize that a non-networked PCU transmitting in autonomous mode during the third time interval is receiving the UAI downlink information.

5. The multi mode personal communication system as recited in claim 4 wherein the PCU'"'"'s are further configured to recognize that a non-networked PCU transmitting in autonomous mode during other than the third time interval information is not receiving the UAI downlink information.

6. The multi mode personal communication system as recited in claim 5 wherein the PCU'"'"'s are further configured to receive UAI downlink information intended for a non-networked PCU not receiving the UAI downlink information, and to transmit the received information to the non-networked PCU during the third time interval.

7. A personal communications system for facilitating full duplex communication between a network defined by a plurality of radio transceivers and a wired intercom system via a repeater, the system comprising:

(a) a plurality of radio transceivers in full duplex communication mode therebetween and defining a transceiver network;

(b) at least one wired intercom system; and

(c) a repeater interfacing the network and the wired intercom system(s), the repeater being operative to communicate signals between the plurality of transceivers in the network and the wired intercom system(s) in full duplex communication mode, the repeater further being operative to receive signals from the plurality of transceivers and form a first composite signal therefrom for simultaneous communication of the signals to the wired intercom system(s), wherein each of the wired intercom system(s) receives the signals from the plurality of transceivers embedded therein.

8. The system as set forth in claim 7 wherein the repeater is configured to provide full duplex communication between the plurality of transceivers and the wired intercom system(s).

9. The system as set forth in claim 8 wherein the repeater is further configured to provide full duplex communication between each of the plurality of transceivers.

10. The system as set forth in claim 7 wherein the repeater is further configured to form a second composite signal comprised of the first composite signal and a wired intercom signal.

11. The system as set forth in claim 10 wherein the repeater is operative to communicate the second composite signal to the plurality of transceivers.

12. The system as set forth in claim 7 wherein the wired intercom system is installed within a vehicle.

13. The system as set forth in claim 7 wherein each transceiver comprises an antenna for radio frequency communication with other transceivers.

14. The system as set forth in claim 7 wherein the repeater is configured to receive voice and data signals from the transceivers, and to form the first composite signal therefrom.

15. The system as set forth in claim 7 further comprising a second repeater and a third repeater, wherein the repeater is operative to transmit communications received from one of the transceivers and the second repeater to another of the transceivers and the third repeater.

16. The system as set forth in claim 7 wherein the signals from the transceivers are digital signals.

17. The system as set forth in claim 7 wherein the repeater transmits voice communications from the wired intercom system(s) to the transceivers.

18. The system as set forth in claim 7 wherein each transceiver is operative to commence communication with the repeater only in response to network access granted by the repeater.

19. The system as set forth in claim 7 wherein the repeater is configured for centralized control of the network such that the repeater receives, transmits and regulates signals between the transceivers.

20. The system as set forth in claim 19 wherein the transceivers are configured for distributed control of the network such that the transceivers are operable to communicate directly with one another when the repeater is inoperative.

21. The system as set forth in claim 20 wherein the transceivers and the repeater are operative to alternately switch between centralized control and distributed control of the network as the network topology changes.

22. The system as set forth in claim 7 wherein the repeater is in wired communication with the wired intercom system(s).

23. The system as set forth in claim 7 wherein the repeater is in wireless communication with the wired intercom system(s).

24. A method of communicating with a personal communications system within a network defined by a plurality of transceivers, a repeater, and at least one wired intercom system, the method comprising the steps of:

(a) communicating a first signal from a first transceiver to the repeated;

(b) communicating a second signal from a second transceiver to the repeater;

(c) combining the first and second signals to form a first composite signal; and

(d) simultaneously communicating the first and second signals as the first composite signal from the repeater to the wired intercom system(s), wherein each of the wired intercom system(s) receives the first and second signals embedded therein.

25. The method of claim 24 further comprising the step of combining the first composite signal and a wired intercom signal to form a second composite signal.

26. The method of claim 25 further comprising the step of communicating the second composite signal to the plurality of transceivers.

27. The method of claim 24 further comprising the step of installing the wired intercom system(s) within a vehicle.

28. The method of claim 24 further comprising the step of each transceiver communicating by radio frequency via an antenna with the plurality of transceivers.

29. The method of claim 24 wherein the system comprises a second repeater and a third repeater, the method further comprising the step of the repeater transmitting communications received from one of the transceivers and the second repeater to another of the transceivers and the third repeater.

30. The method of claim 24 wherein the first and second signals are digital signals.

31. The method of claim 24 further comprising the step of the repeater transmitting voice communications from the wired intercom system(s) to the transceivers.

32. The method of claim 24 further comprising the step of each transceiver commencing communication with the repeater only in response to network access granted by the repeater.

33. The method of claim 24 further comprising the step of the repeater providing centralized control of the network such that the repeater receives, transmits and regulates signals between the transceivers.

34. The method of claim 33 further comprising the step of the transceivers providing distributed control of the network such that the transceivers are operable to communicate directly with one another when the repeater is inoperative.

35. The method of claim 34 further comprising the step of the transceivers and the repeater providing alternate switching between centralized control and distributed control of the network as the network topology changes.

36. The method of claim 24 further comprising the step of the repeater communicating via wired transmission with the wired intercom system(s).

37. The method of claim 24 further comprising the step of the repeater communicating via wireless transmission with the wired intercom system(s).

38. A personal communications system for facilitating full duplex communication between a network defined by a plurality of radio transceivers and a wired intercom system via a repeater the system comprising:

(a) a plurality of radio transceivers in fill duplex communication mode therebetween and defining a transceiver network;

(b) at least one wired intercom system; and

(c) a repeater interfacing the network and the wired intercom system(s), the repeater being operative to communicate signals between the plurality of transceivers in the network and the wired intercom system(s) in fill duplex communication mode, the repeater further being operative to receive signals from the plurality of transceivers and the wired intercom system(s) to form a first composite signal therefrom for simultaneous communication of the signals to the plurality of transceivers, wherein each of the transceivers receive signals from the transceivers and the wired intercom system(s) embedded therein.

39. The system as set forth in claim 38 wherein the repeater is configured to provide full duplex communication between the plurality of transceivers and the wired intercom system.

40. The system as set forth in claim 39 wherein the repeater is further configured to provide full duplex communication between each of the plurality of transceivers.

41. The system as set forth in claim 38 wherein the repeater is configured to form a second composite signal comprised of the signals from the plurality of transceivers for communication to the wired intercom system.

42. The system as set forth in claim 38 wherein the wired intercom system is installed within a vehicle.

43. The system as set forth in claim 38 wherein each transceiver comprises an antenna for radio frequency communication with other transceivers.

44. The system as set forth in claim 38 wherein the repeater is configured to receive voice and data signals from the transceivers, and to form the first composite signal therefrom.

45. The system as set forth in claim 38 further comprising a second repeater and a third repeater, wherein the repeater is operative to transmit communications received from one of the transceivers and the second repeater to another of the transceivers and the third repeater.

46. The system as set forth in claim 38 wherein the signals from the transceivers are digital signals.

47. The system as set forth in claim 38 wherein the repeater transmits voice communications from the wired intercom system(s) to the transceivers.

48. The system as set forth in claim 38 wherein each transceiver is operative to commence communication with the repeater only in response to network access granted by the repeater.

49. The system as set forth in claim 38 wherein the repeater is configured for centralized control of the network such that the repeater receives, transmits and regulates signals between the transceivers.

50. The system as set forth in claim 49 wherein the transceivers are configured for distributed control of the network such that the transceivers are operable to communicate directly with one another when the repeater is inoperative.

51. The system as set forth in claim 50 wherein the transceivers and the repeater are operative to alternately switch between centralized control and distributed control of the network as the network topology changes.

52. The system as set forth in claim 38 wherein the repeater is in wired communication with the wired intercom system(s).

53. The system as set forth in claim 38 wherein the repeater is in wireless communication with the wired intercom system(s).

54. A method of communicating with a personal communications System within a network defined by a plurality of transceivers, a repeater, and at least one wired intercom system, the method comprising the steps of:

(a) communicating a first signal from a first transceiver to the repeater;

(b) communicating a second signal from a second transceiver to the repeater;

(c) communicating a third signal from the wired intercom system(s) to the repeater;

(d) combining the first, second, and third signals to form a first composite signal; and

(e) simultaneously communicating the first, second, and third signals as the first composite signal from the repeater to the plurality of transceivers, wherein each of the transceivers receive the first, second, and third signals embedded therein.

55. The method of claim 54 further comprising the step of forming a second composite signal comprised of the signals from the plurality of transceivers for communication to the wired intercom system(s).

56. The method of claim 54 further comprising the step of installing the wired intercom system(s) within a vehicle.

57. The method of claim 54 further comprising the step of each transceiver communicating by radio frequency via an antenna with the plurality of transceivers.

58. The method of claim 54 wherein the system comprises a second repeater and a third repeater, the method further comprising the step of the repeater transmitting communications received from one of the transceivers and the second repeater to another of the transceivers and the third repeater.

59. The method of claim 54 wherein the first, second, and third signals are digital signals.

60. The method of claim 54 further comprising the step of the repeater transmitting voice communications from the wired intercom system(s) to the transceivers.

61. The method of claim 54 further comprising the step of each transceiver commencing communication with the repeater only in response to network access granted by the repeater.

62. The method of claim 54 further comprising the step of the repeater providing centralized control of the network such that the repeater receives, transmits and regulates signals between the transceivers.

63. The method of claim 62 further comprising the step of the transceivers providing distributed control of the network such that the transceivers are operable to communicate directly with one another when the repeater is inoperative.

64. The method of claim 63 further comprising the step of the transceivers and the repeater providing alternate switching between centralized control and distributed control of the network as the network topology changes.

65. The method of claim 54 further comprising the step of the repeater communicating via wired transmission with the wired intercom system(s).

66. The method of claim 54 further comprising the step of the repeater communicating via wireless transmission with the wired intercom system(s).

67. An extendable multi-mode communications system for facilitating full duplex communication between a plurality of radio transceivers and one or more wired intercom systems via a repeater, the system comprising:

(a) a plurality of radio transceivers in point to point full duplex communication mode with each other when the system is in point to point mode of operation;

(b) at least one wired intercom system; and

(c) a repeater interfacing the plurality of transceivers and the wired intercom system(s), the repeater, in combination with the transceivers defining a transceiver network operative to facilitate sequenced communication of signals from each transceiver to every other transceiver in full duplex communication mode, the repeater, in combination with the transceivers and the wired intercom system(s), defining an extended transceiver network operative to also communicate the sequenced communication of signals from the plurality of transceivers to the wired intercom system(s) in full duplex communication mode to form an extendable multi-mode communications system.

68. The system as set forth in claim 67 wherein the wired intercom system is installed within a vehicle.

69. The system as set forth in claim 67 wherein the repeater is further operative to incorporate signals from the wired intercom system(s) into the sequenced communication of signals.

70. The system as set forth in claim 67 wherein the repeater is configured to provide full duplex communication between each of the plurality of transceivers to thereby define a network mode of communication.

71. The system as set forth in claim 70 wherein the repeater communicates voice and data signals between each of the transceivers.

72. The system as set forth in claim 67 wherein the repeater is in wired communication with the wired intercom system(s).

73. The system as set forth in claim 67 wherein the repeater is in wireless communication with the wired intercom system(s).

74. The system as set forth in claim 67 wherein each transceiver comprises an antenna for radio frequency communication with other transceivers.

75. The system as set forth in claim 67 wherein the transceivers are configured to communicate with one another when the repeater is inoperative to thereby define an autonomous mode of communication.
