Abstract

A photochromic device is provided which allows the user to leave the device in a high transmissive state even when exposed to a source of radiation and to control the degree of darkening achieved while exposed to the source of radiation.

Claims

1. A controllable photochromic glazing comprising:

a photochromic cell comprising a first transparent substrate having a front and rear surface, said front surface of said first substrate coated with a first transparent electronic conductor;

a second transparent substrate having a front and rear surface, said front surface of said second substrate coated with a second transparent electronic conductor;

said first and second substrates spaced apart and arranged so that said transparent conductor coated surface of said first substrate opposes said transparent conductor coated surface of said second substrate;

a photochromic medium disposed between said first and second substrates and contacting said transparent conductors;

electrical connection means for electrically connecting said first and second transparent conductors, said electrical connection means including control means to provide said device with controllability whereby transmission of light through said photochromic cell can increase from a lower transmission level to a higher transmission level by said control means increasing the electrical resistance of said electrical connection means from a lower resistance level to a higher resistance level.

2. The controllable photochromic glazing according to claim 1, wherein said electrical connection is a variable resistance pathway.

3. The controllable photochromic glazing according to claim 2, wherein said control means comprises at least one of a switch, a sensor, an optotransistor, a photoresistor and a photodiode.

4. The controllable photochromic glazing according to claim 1, wherein said control means controls the electrical resistance of the electrical connection between said first and second transparent conductors.

5. The controllable photochromic glazing according to claim 4, wherein said control means comprises at least one of a switch, a sensor, an optotransistor, a photoresistor and a photodiode.

6. The controllable photochromic glazing according to claim 4, wherein said control means controls the electrical resistance of said electrical connection from a low resistance state to a high resistance state.

7. The controllable photochromic glazing according to claim 6, wherein said low resistance state is in the range between nominally 0 ohms to approximately 10,000 ohms.

8. The controllable photochromic glazing according to claim 6, wherein said high resistance state is an open circuit state.

9. The controllable photochromic glazing according to claim 1, wherein said control means comprises a switch that opens said electrical connection in order to achieve a high light transmission through said photochromic cell when said photochromic medium is exposed to incident photoradiation.

The controllable photochromic glazing according to claim 1, wherein the light transmission through said photochromic medium is less than about 40% transmission when said electrical connection has low electrical resistance and the light transmission is greater than about 50% transmission when said electrical connection has high electrical resistance.

11. The controllable photochromic glazing according to claim 1, wherein the light transmission through said photochromic medium is less than about 40% transmission when said electrical connection has low electrical resistance.

12. The controllable photochromic glazing according to claim 11, wherein the light transmission through said photochromic medium is less than about 25% transmission when said electrical connection has low electrical resistance.

13. The controllable photochromic glazing according to claim 11, wherein the light transmission through said photochromic medium is less than about 15% transmission when said electrical connection has low electrical resistance.

14. The controllable photochromic glazing according to claim 1, wherein the light transmission through said photochromic medium is greater than about 50% transmission when said electrical connection has high electrical resistance.

15. The controllable photochromic glazing according to claim 14, wherein the light transmission through said photochromic medium is greater than about 65% transmission when said electrical connection has high electrical resistance.

16. The controllable photochromic glazing according to claim 15, wherein the light transmission through said photochromic medium is greater than about 75% transmission when said electrical connection has high electrical resistance.

17. The controllable photochromic glazing according to claim 1, wherein said glazing comprises one of an automotive glazing, an aeronautical glazing, an architectural glazing, a glazing for eyeware, a glazing for a display system and a glazing for optics.

18. The controllable photochromic glazing according to claim 17, wherein said automotive glazing comprises one of a vehicular sunroof, vehicular windshield, vehicular shadeband, vehicular side window, vehicular privacy glass, vehicular quarter glass and vehicular backlight.

19. The controllable photochromic glazing according to claim 17, wherein said architectural glazing comprises one of a building window, a skylight, a security partition and a privacy partition.

20. The controllable photochromic glazing according to claim 17, wherein said eyeware glazing comprises an element for one of a sunglass, a ski goggle, a sports goggle, a protective eyeware, a medical eyeware, a prescription eyeware and a welding helmet.

21. The controllable photochromic glazing according to claim 17, wherein said glazing for a display system comprises a filter or a screen for one of an information display, a television or an automatic teller machine.

22. The controllable photochromic glazing according to claim 17, wherein said glazing for optics comprises a lens or a filter for one of a binoculars, telescope and camera.

23. The controllable photochromic glazing according to claim 1, wherein at least one of said first transparent conductor and said second transparent conductor film is selected from the group consisting of indium tin oxide, doped tin oxide and doped zinc oxide.

24. The controllable photochromic glazing according to claim 23, wherein said first transparent conductor and said second transparent conductor are comprised of the same material or different materials.

25. The controllable photochromic glazing according to claim 23, wherein at least one of said first transparent conductor and said second transparent conductor comprises at least one undercoating thin film layer in order to reduce iridescence.

26. The controllable photochromic glazing according to claim 25, wherein at least one of said transparent conductors comprises fluorine doped tin oxide.

27. The controllable photochromic glazing according to claim 1, wherein at least one of said first and second transparent conductors comprises a substantially light transmitting thin metallic film.

28. The controllable photochromic glazing according to claim 1, wherein said photochromic cell develops an electrical potential across said first and second transparent conductors when said photochromic medium is irradiated with photoradiation while said electrical connection means is in an open circuit state.

29. The controllable photochromic glazing according to claim 28, wherein the rate of change in transmission from a lower transmission state to a higher transmission state is accelerated when an external potential of polarity opposite to that developed across the photochromic cell is applied to said first and second transparent conductors by an external power supply.
