1. A composition for use in a competition assay comprising an electrode comprising:

  • a) a covalently attached binding ligand, wherein said binding ligand is selected from the group consisting of a target analyte and a target analyte analog; and

    b) a covalently attached solvent accessible transition metal complex comprising a metal selected from the group consisting of manganese, technetium, rhenium, iron, ruthenium, osmium, cobalt, rhodium, iridium, nickel, palladium, platinum, copper, silver and gold;

    such that upon binding of a binding partner of said target analyte or said analog, a solvent inhibited transition metal complex is formed.
