1. A power amplifier, comprising a power operational amplifier adapted to receive an input signal on at least one input terminal and deliver a corresponding amplified signal on an output terminal and having at least one input stage and one power stage coupled in series in a chain between said at least one input terminal and said output terminal, that can be operated in a first mode, with both the input stage and the power stage enabled, and a second mode, with the input stage disabled and the power stage enabled, the power operational amplifier including a control element coupled to the input stage for selectively disabling and enabling the input stage, and the input stage including a differential amplifier having first and second input terminals coupled to the respective input terminals of the power operational amplifier, and including a gain stage having an input coupled to an output terminal of the differential amplifier and having an output coupled to the input of the power stage.

Abstract
An integrated power operational amplifier can alternatively be operated in a master or a slave mode, such that a master amplifier can be connected in parallel with one or more slave amplifiers. This arrangement allows very low impedance loads to be driven, as well as allowing the heat dissipation to be distributed over a number of operational amplifiers, thereby raising the maximum dissipation limits of integrated power systems. In addition by eliminating the ballast resistors, more power can be delivered by the system, for the same supply voltage, and less power is dissipated.

A power amplifier, comprising a power operational amplifier adapted to receive an input signal on at least one input terminal and deliver a corresponding amplified signal on an output terminal and having at least one input stage and one power stage coupled in series in a chain between said at least one input terminal and said output terminal, that can be operated in a first mode, with both the input stage and the power stage enabled, and a second mode, with the input stage disabled and the power stage enabled, the power operational amplifier including a control element coupled to the input stage for selectively disabling and enabling the input stage, and the input stage including a differential amplifier having first and second input terminals coupled to the respective input terminals of the power operational amplifier, and including a gain stage having an input coupled to an output terminal of the differential amplifier and having an output coupled to the input of the power stage.

5. A power amplifier having an input terminal, an input/output terminal, and an output terminal, the power amplifier comprising:

an input stage coupled to a supply voltage and structured to receive an input signal from the input terminal and produce, based on the input signal to the input stage, an output signal on the input/output terminal;
an output stage coupled to the supply voltage and structured to receive an input signal from the input/output terminal and produce, based on the input signal to the output stage, an output signal on the output terminal of the power amplifier;
a gain stage coupled between the input stage and the output stage, the gain stage having an input terminal coupled an output terminal of the input stage for accepting an input signal, and structured to produce a modified signal on the input/output terminal of the power amplifier based on the input signal at the input terminal of the gain stage; and
a control element, structured to receive a control signal and, responsive to the control signal, prevent the input stage from producing the output signal on the input/output terminal, while leaving the input stage and the output stage coupled to the supply voltage.

6. A power amplifier having an input terminal, an input/output terminal, and an output terminal, the power amplifier comprising:

an input stage coupled to a supply voltage and structured to receive an input signal from the input terminal and produce, based on the input signal to the input stage, an output signal on the input/output terminal;
an output stage coupled to the supply voltage and structured to receive an input signal from the input/output terminal and produce, based on the input signal to the output stage, an output signal on the output terminal of the power amplifier; and
a control element, structured to receive a control signal and, responsive to the control signal, prevent the input stage from producing the output signal on the input/output terminal, while leaving the input stage and the output stage coupled to the supply voltage, wherein the control element is structured to couple the output signal from the input stage to a reference voltage when the control signal is received. - View Dependent Claims (7)

8. A power amplifier, comprising:

a first differential amplifier having a first pair of differential input terminals and an output terminal;
a gain stage including a current source coupled at a first end to a voltage supply, and coupled at a second end to a transistor that is in turn coupled to a reference voltage, the output terminal of the first differential amplifier coupled to a control terminal of the transistor;
an input/output terminal coupled to the second end of the current source;
an second differential amplifier having a first input coupled to the input/output terminal, and having a second input feedback connected to an output terminal of the second differential amplifier; and
a input selection switch structured to, in a first condition, couple the output terminal of the first differential amplifier to a reference voltage. - View Dependent Claims (9, 10, 11)

12. A method of amplifying a signal in a power amplifier, comprising:

providing an input signal to a first operational amplifier and generating a first signal based on the input signal;
selectively coupling the first signal to an input of a gain stage to produce a gain signal at an output, or de-coupling the first signal from the input of the gain stage and providing a second signal to the output of the gain stage responsive to a control signal; and
