Abstract

An antimicrobial material is described which can be used to form on the surface on a substrate a non-leaching antimicrobial coating or layer which kills microorganisms on contact. The non-leaching antimicrobial coating or layer is a unique combination of an organic matrix immobilized on the surface of the substrate to having biocidal metallic materials non-leachably associated with the matrix. When a microorganism contacts the coating or layer, the biocidal metallic material is transferred to the microorganism in amounts sufficient to kill it. Methods of applying the coating or layer to a substrate also are provided.

Claims

1. A method for coating a substrate with a contact-killing, non-leaching antimicrobial layer comprising:

contacting said substrate with an organic polycationic polymer material under conditions sufficient to form an immobilized organic polycationic polymer matrix on the substrate;

contacting said matrix with an antimicrobial metallic material so as to deposit said metallic material onto or within the matrix, wherein the resulting matrix and the metallic material dispersed therein or attached thereto form an antimicrobial layer which does not release biocidal amounts of elutables into the surrounding environment.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the substrate is selected from the group consisting of metal, wood, synthetic polymers, natural or synthetic fibers, cloth, ceramics and glass.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein said substrate is formed from a synthetic polymer selected from the group consisting of polysulfone, polyacrylate, polyethersulfone, polyamide, polycarbonate, polyvinylidene fluoride, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, silicone;

polysiloxane, polybutadiene, polyisoprene, polyurethane, polyethylene terephthalate, polyinylchloride, polytetrafluoroethylene, polyacrylates, cellulosics and copolymers thereof.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the biocidal material is a metallic material selected from the group consisting of a metal, a metal salt, a metal complex, a metal alloy, and combinations thereof.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the metal is silver.

6. The method of claim 4 wherein the metal salt is silver iodide.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the organic matrix comprises a biguanide polymer.

8. The method claim 7 wherein the biguanide polymer comprises polyhexamethylene biguanide or its salts.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the organic material is crosslinked with a crosslinking agent.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the crosslinking agent comprises a functional moiety selected from the group consisting of isocyanates, carboxylic acids, acid chlorides, acid anhydrides, succimidyl ether aldehydes, aldehydes, ketones, alkyl methanesulfonates, alkyl trifluoromethanesulfonates, alkyl para-toluenemethanesulfonates, alkyl halides and epoxides.
