A surface acoustic wave element having an encoding electrode and a plurality of comb-like electrodes on a substrate made of a piezoelectric material, wherein said plurality of comb-like electrodes have different overlapped lengths of electrode fingers and the respective ground side terminal patterns of said encoding electrode and said comb-like electrodes are provided in common with each other.

30. A surface acoustic wave element, comprising:

a substrate made of a piezoelectric material;
a comb-like electrode on the substrate, the comb-like electrode including a first set of parallel electrode fingers that are electrically connected together and a second set of parallel electrode fingers that are electrically connected together, the electrode fingers of the first set being interdigitated with the electrode fingers of the second set and overlapping the electrode fingers of the second set by a predetermined overlap length;
an encoding electrode on the substrate at a position spaced apart from the comb-like electrode, the encoding electrode including a third set of parallel electrode fingers that are electrically connected together and that are disposed in spaced apart groups and a fourth set of parallel electrode fingers that are electrically connected together and that are disposed in spaced apart groups corresponding to the groups of the third set of electrode fingers, the electrode fingers of each group of the third set being interdigitated with the electrode fingers of the corresponding group of the fourth set and overlapping the electrode fingers of the corresponding group of the fourth set by a predetermined overlap length that is substantially different from the overlap length of the electrode fingers of the first and second sets; and
