Abstract

A computer system is capable of playing audio CDs in a CD-ROM drive independent of the operating system by using an embedded CD-ROM drive application or a CD-ROM drive controller. When an audio CD mode switch of the computer system is in an “on” state and the main power switch of the computer is in an “off” state, the computer system is in an audio CD mode. When the computer is placed in such an audio CD mode, the computer either loads the embedded CD application from a non-volatile memory region such as read-only-memory (ROM) region or enables the CD-ROM drive controller of the CD-ROM drive to receive a CD selection and transmit the selections to the CD-ROM drive. The embedded CD application includes an embedded CD-ROM device driver for driving the CD-ROM drive to process audio CDs, power-on-self test (POST) code for selectively powering and initializing hardware devices in the computer system, initialization code for the embedded CD-ROM device driver, and system management interrupt/keyboard controller interface code used for processing the selection of a CD button of the computer system.

Claims

1. A computer system, comprising:

a CD-ROM drive; and

an audio CD play subsystem to play an audio CD in the CD-ROM drive during an audio CD play mode of the computer system,

wherein the computer system is not fully powered during the audio CD play mode.

2. The computer system of claim 1, further comprising:

an audio CD play switch to enable the CD-ROM drive and the audio CD play subsystem in the audio CD play mode.

3. The computer system of claim 1, the audio CD play subsystem comprising:

a controller to detect a plurality of audio CD play buttons for playing the audio CD in the CD-ROM drive during the audio CD play mode.

4. The computer system of claim 3, wherein the controller generates an interrupt signal in response to selection of an audio CD play button of the plurality of audio CD play buttons during the audio CD play mode.

5. The computer system of claim 1, the audio CD play subsystem, comprising:

a controller to communicate a plurality of audio CD play commands corresponding to a plurality of audio CD play buttons to the CD-ROM drive during the audio CD play mode.

6. The computer system of claim 1, wherein the computer system enters the audio CD play mode without a full boot-up procedure.

7. The computer system of claim 1, wherein the computer system enters the audio CD play mode without loading an operating system.

8. An audio CD play controller of a computer system, the controller comprising:

a means for detecting a plurality of audio CD play buttons for playing an audio CD in a CD-ROM drive of a computer system during an audio CD play mode wherein the computer system is not fully powered; and

a means for communicating a plurality of audio CD play commands corresponding to the plurality of audio CD play buttons to the CD-ROM drive during the audio CD play mode.

9. The controller of claim 8, wherein the means for detecting a plurality of audio CD play buttons generates an interrupt signal in response to selection of an audio CD play button of the plurality of audio CD play buttons during the audio CD play mode.

10. The controller of claim 8, wherein the computer system enters the audio CD play mode without a full boot-up procedure.

11. The controller of claim 8, wherein the computer system enters the audio CD play mode without loading an operating system.

12. A method of playing audio CDs in a CD-ROM drive of a computer system, the method comprising the steps of:

entering an audio CD play mode of the computer system wherein the computer system is not fully powered and the CD-ROM drive is enabled;

detecting selection of an audio CD play button of a plurality of audio CD play buttons for playing an audio CD in the CD-ROM drive during the audio CD play mode; and

communicating an audio CD play command corresponding to the audio CD play button to the CD-ROM drive during the audio CD play mode.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising the step of:

detecting a state of an audio CD play switch of the computer system for entry into the audio CD play mode.

14. The method of claim 12, further comprising the step of:

processing the selection of the audio CD play button to generate an audio CD play command corresponding to the audio CD play button.

15. A method of supporting an audio CD play mode of a computer system, the method comprising the steps of:

detecting a state of an audio CD play switch of the computer system for enabling an audio CD play mode of the computer system wherein the computer system is not fully powered; and

detecting an audio CD play button of a plurality of audio CD play buttons for playing an audio CD and a CD-ROM drive of the computer system during the audio CD play mode.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein each of the steps are performed by an audio CD play controller of the computer system.

17. The method of claim 15, further comprising the step of:

sending an audio CD play command corresponding to the audio CD play button to the CD-ROM drive during the audio CD play mode.

18. An audio CD play controller chip of a computer system, the chip comprising:

a means for detecting a state of an audio CD play mode switch of the computer system for enabling an audio CD play mode of the computer system wherein the computer system is not fully powered; and

a means for detecting an audio CD play button of a plurality of audio CD play buttons for playing an audio CD in a CD-ROM drive of the computer system during the audio CD play mode.

19. The chip of claim 18, further comprising:

a means for sending an audio CD play command corresponding to the audio CD play button to the CD-ROM drive during the audio CD play mode.
