Abstract

A method for bonding (905) to a device (901, 902). The method includes a step of transmitting a beacon message (2500). The method also includes steps of (i) selecting a beacon opcode (2501), (ii) selecting an identifier (2512), (iii) selecting an identifier type (2514), (iii) selecting an identifier address (2516), composing the beacon opcode (2501), the identifier (2512), the identifier type (2514) and the identifier address (2516) into the beacon message (2500). The method also includes a step of receiving, in response to the transmitting step, a make bond message (2530).

Claims

1. A method of initiating a communication link between first and second electronic devices, comprising the steps of:

transmitting an unsolicited message for establishing communications from the first electronic device to the second electronic device that provides an identity of the first electronic device, and when communications is established provides a first data word for a need of the first electronic device that the first electronic device does not have the ability of performing, and a second data word for a capability of the first electronic device that the first electronic device does have the ability of performing;

receiving the unsolicited message in the second electronic device; and

providing an authorization in the second electronic device for the second electronic device to communicate with the first electronic device based on the unsolicited message from the first electronic device.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of transmitting an associate message from the second electronic device to the first electronic device after the second electronic device is authorized to communicate with the first electronic device, wherein the associate message confirms that the second electronic device is authorized to communicate with the first electronic device.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising the steps of:

receiving in the first electronic device the associate message transmitted from the second electronic device; and

authorizing the first electronic device to communicate with the second electronic device based on the associate message received from the second electronic device.

The method of claim 3, further comprising the step of transmitting an associate confirm message from the first electronic device to the second electronic device after establishing authorization for the first electronic device to communicate with the second electronic device, wherein the associate confirm message confirms that the first electronic device is authorized to communicate with the second electronic device.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising the step of receiving in the second electronic device the associate confirm message transmitted from the first electronic device, wherein the first and second electronic devices have completed initiating a communication link.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein transmitting the unsolicited message from the first electronic device to the second electronic device occurs when the first electronic device and the second electronic device are within about five meters of each other.

7. A method of establishing a communications link between a first peer and a second peer, comprising the steps of:

transmitting from the first peer to the second peer an unsolicited message for establishing communications that provides an identity of the first peer, and when communications is established a first data word for a need of the first peer that the first peer does not have the ability of performing, and a second data word for a capability of the first peer that the first peer does have the ability of performing;

acknowledging receipt of the unsolicited message from the first peer based on authorization of the second peer to communicate with the first peer by transmitting an associate message from the second peer; and

acknowledging receipt of the associate message of the second peer based on authorization of the first peer to communicate with the second peer by transmitting an associate confirm message from the first peer.

8. The method of claim 7, further including the steps of:

transmitting from the second peer a needs message that includes a function scheduled to be performed by the second peer that is outside a capability of the second peer; and

matching a portion of the needs message received by the first peer with a capability of the first peer to perform the function defined in the needs message.

9. The method of claim 8, further including the steps of:

transferring data from the second peer to the first peer; and

performing the function by the first peer that matches a portion of the needs message received by the first peer with a capability of the first peer to perform the function defined in the needs message.

10. The method of claim 9, further including the step of transferring data from the first peer to the second peer, wherein the transferred data has been altered in accordance with the function performed by the first peer.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the step of transferring data from the first peer to the second peer occurs when the first and second peers are within about five meters of each other.

12. The method of claim 7, further comprising the step of resetting an internal timer in the first peer prior to the first peer establishing the method of communicating between the first peer and the second peer.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising the steps of:

determining that the first peer has a timer expired message pending as a result of the internal timer in the first peer timing out; and

executing a timer expired process in the first peer when the timer expired message is pending.

14. The method of claim 13, further comprising the step of beginning a ping message pending process in the first peer when the timer expired message is not executing.

15. The method as claimed in claim 14, further comprising steps of:

determining when a ping message is pending in the first peer, wherein the ping message is transmitted from the first peer to the second peer to maintain the established communications link; and

executing the ping message when the ping message is pending in the first peer.

16. An integrated circuit for providing wireless communication, comprising:

a transmit and receive section having a terminal;

a memory having a terminal coupled to the terminal of the transmit and receive section, wherein the memory stores a beacon message that includes an identity of the integrated circuit, a first data word for a need of the integrated circuit that the integrated circuit does not have the ability of performing and a second data word for a capability of the integrated circuit that the integrated circuit does have the ability of performing; and

a processor having a terminal coupled to the terminal of the memory for transferring the beacon message to the transmit and receive section that is transmitted as an unsolicited signal for establishing communication with an electronic device, and further transferring the need of the integrated circuit to the transmit and receive section once communication with the electronic device has been established.

17. The integrated circuit of claim 16, wherein the identity of the integrated circuit is sufficiently unique within a communications network.

18. The integrated circuit of claim 16, wherein the beacon message is periodically transmitted from the transmit and receive section.
