1. A medical electrode system for delivering a therapeutic agent to a subject, comprising:
- (a) a primary electrode system comprising;
(i) a first reservoir having at least one first reservoir electrode and an electrolyte; and
(ii) a second reservoir having at least one second reservoir electrode and an electrolyte;
the second reservoir being spaced apart from the first reservoir;
(b) a secondary electrode system comprising;
(i) a secondary electrode located within the first reservoir and isolated from direct electrical contact with any first reservoir electrode; and
(ii) a companion electrode;
(c) a control unit constructed and arranged for operation;
(i) to operate the primary electrode system to generate an electrical potential between at least one first reservoir electrode and at least one second reservoir electrode to provide electromotive movement of a species between either reservoir and the subject; and
(ii) to operate the secondary electrode system to generate an electrical potential between at least one secondary electrode and the companion electrode, wherein the companion electrode is at least one second reservoir electrode, such that an effect of electrochemical reactions involving the secondary electrode system on contents of either reservoir is different from that of the primary electrode system.

(a) a primary electrode system comprising;
(i) a first reservoir having at least one first reservoir electrode and an electrolyte; and
(ii) a second reservoir having at least one second reservoir electrode and an electrolyte;
the second reservoir being spaced apart from the first reservoir;
(b) a secondary electrode system comprising;
(i) a secondary electrode located within the first reservoir and isolated from direct electrical contact with any first reservoir electrode; and
(ii) a companion electrode;
(c) a control unit constructed and arranged for operation;
(i) to operate the primary electrode system to generate an electrical potential between at least one first reservoir electrode and at least one second reservoir electrode to provide electromotive movement of a species between either reservoir and the subject; and
(ii) to operate the secondary electrode system to generate an electrical potential between at least one secondary electrode and the companion electrode, wherein the companion electrode is at least one second reservoir electrode, such that an effect of electrochemical reactions involving the secondary electrode system on contents of either reservoir is different from that of the primary electrode system. - View Dependent Claims (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7)

(a) said first reservoir electrode in said first reservoir comprises an Ag/AgCl electrode.

(a) said second reservoir electrode in said second reservoir comprises an Ag/AgCl electrode.

5. A medical electrode system according to claim 1 wherein:
(a) said first reservoir contains a buffer.

(a) said first reservoir contains an antibacterial agent.

(a) wherein the different electrochemical reaction in (c)(ii) can be used to diagnose a medical condition.

8. A diagnostic electrode system, comprising:
-
(a) a primary electrode system comprising;
(i) a first reservoir having at least one first reservoir electrode and an electrolyte; and
(ii) a second reservoir having at least one second reservoir electrode and an electrolyte;
the second reservoir being spaced apart from the first reservoir;
(b) a secondary electrode system comprising;
(i) a secondary electrode located within the first reservoir and isolated from direct electrical contact with any first reservoir electrode; and
(ii) a companion electrode;
(c) a control unit constructed and arranged for operation;
(i) to operate the primary electrode system to generate an electrical potential between at least one first reservoir electrode and at least one second reservoir electrode to provide electromotive movement of a species between either reservoir and the subject; and
(ii) to operate the secondary electrode system to generate an electrical potential between at least one secondary electrode and the companion electrode, wherein the companion electrode is at least one second reservoir electrode, such that an effect of electrochemical reactions involving the secondary electrode system on contents of either reservoir is different from that of the primary electrode system; and
(d) a sensor positioned within at least one of the first or second reservoir, said sensor being capable of detecting a selected characteristic of either the first or second reservoir, or both. - View Dependent Claims (9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14)
(a) the selected characteristic of the first or second reservoir is selected from the group consisting of total ion content, organic ion content, inorganic ion content, and specific ion content.

10. The diagnostic electrode system according to claim 8, wherein:
(a) the selected characteristic of the first or second reservoir is a physical characteristic of said electrolyte in the first or second reservoir.

11. The diagnostic electrode system according to claim 10, wherein:
(a) the characteristic of said electrolyte is conductance.

12. The diagnostic electrode system according to claim 8, wherein:
(a) the sensor is selected from the group consisting of a pH meter, an optical sensor, an ion selective electrode, and a conductance measurement device.

13. The diagnostic electrode system according to claim 12, wherein the ion selective electrode is the secondary electrode.

14. The diagnostic electrode system according to claim 8, wherein the sensor is the secondary electrode system.
