Abstract

A method and system for monitoring the capacity of a battery pack is provided. The battery pack is capable of delivering current to a load. The battery pack includes a monitor cell and battery cells. The monitor cell has an initial energy level that is lower by a predetermined difference from the initial energy level of at least one of the other battery cells. A monitoring system including an analog-to-digital converter and a microprocessor is connected to the battery pack and monitors the voltage of the battery pack. When the monitoring system detects a voltage change indicating depletion of the monitor cell, the monitoring system provides a signal indicative that the battery pack is nearing depletion. The proportional rate of discharge of the monitor cell relative to the other cells during normal defibrillator operation is matched to the proportional rate of discharge occurring at other times. Thus, the assumptions as to the remaining energy reserves when the monitor cell is depleted remain accurate whether the battery pack is discharged by normal defibrillator operation or by other phenomenon such as energy drain during non-use. In addition, the system will accurately provide a warning of battery pack depletion regardless of the type of batteries used or the initial energy levels, as long as the batteries are initially similar to one another. Thus, batteries from any manufacturer or production lot may be used for the battery pack without requiring advance knowledge of the energy characteristics of the particular set of batteries.

Claims

1. A system for monitoring an energy level of a battery pack, the system comprising:

a battery pack comprising a monitor cell and one or more additional cell that are electronically coupled together;

a monitoring system for detecting when the monitor cell is depleted;

a load device capable of being powered by the battery pack and capable of performing at least a first specified operation while being powered by the battery pack;

the load device and the battery pack operating together during the first specified operation of the load device such that the monitor cell will be depleted prior to the depletion of the one or more additional cells;

wherein the monitor cell is depleted at a first proportional discharge rate with respect to the one or more additional cells when the battery pack is being used to power the first specified operation of the load device;

wherein the monitor cell is depleted at a second proportional discharge rate with respect to the one or more additional cells when the battery pack is not being used to power the first specified operation of the load device; and

wherein the first proportional discharge rate is approximately equal to the second proportional discharge rate.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the battery pack further comprises multiple monitor cell electronically couple to the other cell, each monitor cell having a different initial energy level.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the monitoring system detects the depletion of each monitor cell by detecting a voltage change of at least a predetermined magnitude and provides an indication of a level of energy remaining in the battery pack upon depletion of each monitor cell.

The system of claim 3, further comprising a defibrillator wherein the battery pack is connected to said defibrillator and wherein the system provides an indication of an approximate operation capacity of the defibrillator when the monitoring system detects the depletion of a monitor cell within the battery pack.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the monitor cell has a lower ampere-hour storage capacity than at least one of the other cells within the battery pack.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the monitor cell is predischarged to an initial energy level lower than at least one other cell in the battery pack.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the first proportional discharge rate is approximately a one-to-one ratio.

8. A defibrillator for applying defibrillation pulses to a patient, comprising:

a battery pack comprising a monitor cell and one or more additional cells;

the defibrillator operating such that the monitor cell will be depleted prior to the depletion of the one or more additional cells;

a monitoring system for detecting when the monitor cell is depleted;

the monitor cell being depleted at a first proportional discharge rate with respect to the one or more additional cells when the battery pack is being used to provide the energy for the defibrillation pulses of the defibrillator;

the monitor cell is being depleted at a second proportional discharge rate with respect to the one or more additional cells when the battery pack is not being used to provide the energy for the defibrillation pulses of the defibrillator; and

the first proportional discharge rate being approximately equal to the second proportional discharge rate.

9. The defibrillator of claim 8, wherein the battery pack further comprises multiple monitor cells, each monitor cell having a different initial energy level.

10. The defibrillator of claim 9, wherein the monitoring system detects the depletion of each monitor cell by detecting a voltage change of at least a predetermined magnitude and providing an indication of a level of energy remaining in the battery pack upon depletion of each monitor cell.

11. The defibrillator of claim 8, wherein the monitor cell has a lower ampere-hour storage capacity than at least one of the other cells in the battery pack.

12. The defibrillator of claim 8, wherein the monitor cell is predischarged to a initial energy level lower than at least one of the other cell in the battery pack.

13. A method for monitoring the energy level of a battery pack, the method comprising:

providing a battery pack comprising a monitor cell and one or more additional cells;

providing a monitoring system for detecting when the monitor cell is depleted;

providing a load device capable of being powered by the battery pack and capable of performing at least a first specified operation while being powered by the battery pack;

the load device and the battery pack operating together during the first specified operation of the load device such that the monitor cell will be depleted prior to the depletion of the one or more additional cells;

depleting the monitor cell at a first proportional discharge rate with respect to the one or more additional cells when the battery pack is being used to power the first specified operation of the load device;

depleting the monitor cell at a second proportional discharge rate with respect to the one or more additional cells when the battery pack is not being used to power the first specified operation of the load device; and

the first proportional discharge rate being approximately equal to the second proportional discharge rate.

14. The method of claim 13, further comprising providing multiple monitor cells, each monitor cell having a different initial energy level.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the monitoring system detects the depletion of each monitor cell by detecting a voltage change of at least a predetermined magnitude and providing an indication of a level of energy remaining in the battery pack upon depletion of each monitor cell.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the battery pack is connected to a defibrillator and wherein the monitoring system provides an indication of an approximate operation capacity of the defibrillator when the monitoring system detects the depletion of a monitor cell within the battery pack.

17. The method of claim 13, wherein the monitor cell has a lower ampere-hour storage capacity than at least one of the other cells within the battery pack.

18. The method of claim 13, wherein the monitor cell is predischarged to an initial energy level lower than at least one other cell in the battery pack.

19. The method of claim 13, wherein the first proportional discharge rate is approximately a one-to-one ratio.

20. The method of claim 13, wherein the proportional discharge rate of the monitor cell relative to the one or more additional cells is other than a one-to-one ratio, and a means for drawing more or less current from the monitor cell during the specified operation of the load device is provided.
