Selective coating of a balloon catheter with lubricious material for stent deployment
First Claim
1. A balloon catheter having a shaft and a balloon associated therewith and a stent carried on said balloon, the balloon having a proximal end portion, a distal end portion and a central portion, wherein the balloon has a collapsed state in which a surface portion of the central portion is exposed and an expanded state, the improvement comprising a coating means associated with the catheter, said means being constructed and arranged to provide a first lubricious coating to a major portion of the shaft and a second coating to at least a portion of the exposed surface of the balloon when the balloon is in its collapsed state, wherein the second coating is less lubricious than the first lubricious coating, whereby said stent is provided with a secure seating area on the balloon.

- 10. In a stent carrying balloon catheter of the type including a shaft, a balloon having a cone and a waist at each end and a central portion, wherein the balloon has a collapsed state in which a surface portion of the balloon is exposed and an expanded state, a distal tip portion, a stent positioned on the balloon and a lubricious coating associated with surfaces of the catheter, the improvement comprising a predetermined arrangement of coatings on surface areas of the catheter whereby the shaft is provided with a said lubricious coating over a substantial portion of its length extending from the balloon toward the proximal end of the shaft, the distal tip is similarly coated as the shaft, while at least a portion of the surface portion of the balloon body is coated with a relatively less lubricious coating.
- 16. In a stent delivery balloon catheter of the type including a shaft and a balloon associated therewith, the balloon having a proximal end portion, a distal end portion and a central portion, wherein the balloon has a collapsed state in which a surface portion of the central portion is exposed and an expanded state, and a stent mounted on the central portion of the balloon, the improvement comprising including a first lubricious hydrophilic coating bonded to at least a major portion of the shaft of said balloon catheter and a tacky coating bonded to at least a portion of the exposed portion of the central portion, both coatings being arranged to provide relatively more lubricity with respect to the at least a major portion of the shaft than with respect to the at least a portion of the exposed surface of the central portion of the balloon when the balloon is in its collapsed state, such that a secure seating area is provided for the stent.
- 24. A stent delivery balloon catheter having a shaft and a balloon associated therewith and a stent carried on said balloon, the balloon having a proximal end portion, a distal end portion and a central portion, the balloon further having a collapsed state, wherein the balloon has an exposed surface portion, and an expanded state, the improvement comprising a lubricious coating means associated with the catheter, said means being constructed and arranged to provide a lubricious coating to a major portion of the shaft and a tacky coating to at least a portion of the balloon, wherein the tacky coating is coated on at least a portion of the exposed surface portion provide a secure seating area for a stent.
