Abstract

Apparatus for aiding in the identification of tissue type for an anomalous tissue in an impedance image comprising:

means for providing an polychromic immitance map of a portion of the body;

means for determining a plurality of polychromic measures from one or both of a portion of the body; and

a display which displays an indication based on said plurality of polychromic measures.

Claims

1. Apparatus for impedance imaging or a region of a subject, comprising:

a first, multi-element, probe comprising a plurality of sensing elements and adapted for mounting on a first side of the region;

a second probe, including one or more sensing elements, adapted for mounting on a surface of the subject; and

a controller which generates at least one impedance image, including a plurality of pixels, based on signals sensed by at least some of the sensing elements of the first probe and at least one of the one or more sensing elements of the second probe.

2. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the second probe is adapted for mounting on a second side of the region.

3. Apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the second side of the region is opposite the first side of the region.

4. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the second probe is adapted for mounting on a portion of the body remote from the region.

5. Apparatus according to claim 1, comprising at least one electrode, not included in the first or second probes, adapted for applying electrical signals to the subject, wherein the at least one image is generated based on electrical signals applied to the subject from the at least one electrode.

6. Apparatus according to claim 5, wherein the at least one electrode is adapted for mounting on a portion of the body remote from the region.

7. Apparatus according to claim 6, comprising a source of electrical energy which alternately applies electrical signals to at least one of the elements of the first and second multi-element probes, wherein the at least one first image is generated based on one or more signals applied to elements of the second probe and the at least one second image is generated based on one or more signals applied to elements of the first probe.

8. Apparatus according to claim 7, wherein the first image is generated based on signals sensed by a number of elements of the first probe greater than the number of electrified elements of the second probe used in generating the first image.

9. Apparatus according to claim 5, comprising a source of electrical energy which provides a voltage difference between the at least one electrode and at least one element of the first or second probe.

10. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the second probe comprises a multi-element probe.

11. Apparatus according to claim 10, wherein the controller generates at least one first impedance image based on signals sensed by at least some of the elements of the first probe and at least one second impedance image based on signals sensed by at least one of the elements of the second probe.

12. Apparatus according to claim 11, wherein the first and second impedance images are sequentially generated.

13. Apparatus according to claim 11, wherein the first and second impedance images are generated substantially simultaneously.

14. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the first probe comprises a two-dimensional array of sensing elements.

15. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the first probe comprises at least 64 sensing elements.

16. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the first probe is adapted to be mounted on a breast.

17. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein each of the pixels of the at least one image corresponds to an element of the first or second probe.

18. A method of impedance imaging a body region of a subject, comprising:

positioning a first, multi-element, probe, comprising a first plurality of sensing elements, on a first side of the region;

positioning a second probe, comprising one or more second sensing elements, on a surface of the subject; and

generating at least one impedance image based on signals sensed by at least some of the first elements and by at least one of the one or more elements of the second probe, while the first and second probes are not moved from their positions.

19. A method according to claim 18, wherein positioning the second probe comprises positioning a multi element probe including a second plurality of elements, on a second side of the region.

20. A method according to claim 19, wherein generating the at least one impedance image comprises generating first and second impedance images based respectively, on signals sensed by at least some of the first and second plurality of elements.

21. A method according to claim 20, comprising applying an electrical stimulus to the subject from an electrode separate from the first and second probes, and wherein both the first and second impedance images are generated responsive to electrical stimulus from the same electrode.

22. A method according to claim 21, wherein applying the electrical stimulus comprises applying from an electrode positioned on a surface of the subject remote from the region.

23. Apparatus according to claim 21, wherein the first and second impedance images are sequentially generated.

24. Apparatus according to claim 21, wherein the first and second impedance images are generated responsive to different stimulus.

25. Apparatus according to claim 21, wherein the first impedance image is generated while substantially all the elements of the second probe are floating.

26. A method according to claim 21, comprising applying an electrical stimulus to the subject from the first probe, and wherein the second impedance image is generated responsive to the electrical stimulus from the first probe.

27. A method according to claim 21, wherein applying the electrical stimulus from the first probe comprises electrifying fewer than all the elements of the first probe.

28. A method according to claim 26, wherein applying the electrical stimulus from the first probe comprises electrifying fewer elements than a number of elements of the second probe used in forming the at least one second image.

29. A method according to claim 20, comprising applying an electrical stimulus to the subject from the second probe, and wherein the first impedance image is generated responsive to the electrical stimulus from the second probe.

30. A method according to claim 19, wherein the second side of the region is opposite the first side of the region.

31. A method according to claim 18, wherein the first probe comprises a two dimensional matrix of elements.

32. A method according to claim 18, wherein the region comprises a breast.

33. A method according to claim 18, comprising identifying an anomaly on the at least one impedance image and determining a depth of the anomaly beneath the first or second probe responsive to the at least one image.

36. A method according to claim 33, wherein generating the at least one map comprises generating the respective maps of the two probes, concurrently.

37. A method according to claim 33, wherein determining the depth comprises comparing the size of the anomaly on the respective maps of the two probes.

34. A method of impedance imaging of a body region of a subject, comprising:

positioning at least one multi-element probe, on at least one respective surface of the region;

sensing signals from elements of the at least one multi-element probe;

generating at least one impedance map based on signals sensed by the at least one multi-element probe;

identifying an anomaly on the at least one impedance map; and

determining a depth of the anomaly beneath the at least one probe responsive to the at least one map.

35. A method according to claim 34, wherein positioning the at least one probe comprises positioning two probes on substantially opposite sides of the region and generating the at least one map comprises generating respective maps by the two probes.

38. A method of impedance imaging of a body region of a subject, comprising:

positioning a first multi-element probe, comprising a first plurality of elements, on one side of the region;

positioning a second multi-element probe, comprising a second plurality of elements, on a second side of the region;

electrifying a first group, including a first number, of elements of the first or second probe;

sensing signals induced in the region responsive to the electrified elements of the first group, from a second group of elements of the first or second probe, wherein the second group includes a second number of elements greater than the first number; and

generating an impedance map responsive to signals sensed by the second group of elements.

39. A method according to claim 38, wherein the first and second probes include the same number of elements.

40. A method according to claim 38, wherein the first group of elements includes fewer than all the elements of the first probe.

41. A method according to claim 38, comprising:

electrifying a third group, including a third number, of elements of the first or second probe, at least one of the elements of the third group not being included in the first group;

sensing signals induced in the region responsive to the electrified elements of the third group, from a fourth group of elements of the first or second probe, wherein the fourth group includes more elements than the third group; and

generating an additional impedance map responsive to signals sensed by the fourth group of elements of the first or second probe.

42. A method according to claim 41, comprising determining information regarding the position of an anomaly within the region responsive to the impedance map and the additional impedance map.

43. A method according to claim 42, wherein determining the information regarding the position of the anomaly is performed also responsive to the positions of the elements of the first and second groups.

44. A method of impedance imaging of a region, comprising:

positioning a multi-element probe, comprising a plurality of sensing elements, on one side of the region;

providing electrifying signals to the region from one or more first locations;

measuring first signals at at least some of the elements of the multi-element probe responsive to the signals from the one or more first locations;

generating a first image of the region responsive to the measured first signals;

providing electrifying signals to the region from one or more second locations different from the first locations;

measuring second signals at at least some of the elements of the multi-element probe responsive to the signal from the one or more second locations; and

generating a second image of the region responsive to the measured second signals,

wherein the first and second images are generated while the multi-element probe is in substantially the same position.

45. A method according to claim 44, wherein providing the electrifying signals from the one or more first and second locations comprises providing electrifying signals to a second multi-element probe.

46. A method according to claim 44, wherein measuring first and second signals at at least some of the elements comprises measuring at substantially all the elements of the multi-element probe.

47. A method according to claim 44, comprising analyzing the region responsive to the first and second images and the one or more first and second locations.

48. A method according to claim 44, wherein analyzing the region comprises determining information on the location of an anomaly within the region.

49. Apparatus for impedance imaging of a region within a body, comprising:

a first multi-element probe, comprising a plurality of sensing elements, for positioning on one side of the region;

a second multi-element probe for positioning on a second side of the region and for generating signals to be sensed by the first multi-element probe; and

a controller which electrifies a first group, including a first number, of elements of the second multi-element probe and generates a map responsive to signals sensed by a second group, including a second number greater than the first number, of sensing elements of the first probe.

50. Apparatus according to claim 49, wherein the controller electrifies fewer than all of the elements of the second multi-element probe, in generating the map.

51. Apparatus according to claim 49, wherein the controller sequentially electrifies different groups of the elements of the second multi-element probe.

52. Apparat according to claim 49, wherein at least one of the probes is rigid and non-planar in accordance with the shape of a body structure.

53. Apparatus for impedance imaging of a region of a body, comprising:

a multi-element probe comprising a plurality of sensing elements and adapted for mounting on a first surface of the body, located on a side of the body region;

a first electrode adapted for mounting on a second surface of the body;

a second electrode for mounting on a third surface of the body;

a source of electrical energy which provides an electrical signal at least to the first electrode; and

a controller which senses signals, induced by the source of electrical energy, at least from the second electrode and one or more of the elements of the probe.

54. Apparatus according to claim 53, wherein the multi-element probe comprises a two dimensional array of sensing elements.

55. Apparatus according to claim 53, wherein the source of electrical energy is adapted to provide an electrical voltage between the first electrode and at least one of the elements of the multi-element probe.

56. Apparatus according to claim 53, wherein the third surface of the body is closer to the first surface than the second surface.

57. A method of impedance imaging of a body region of a subject, comprising:

acquiring one or more electrical measurements at each of a plurality of surface points on the body region;

calculating for each of the points a frequency representative of the point, responsive to the one or more measurements at the point; and

displaying a map which has at each point a value which is a function of the calculated frequency of the point.

58. A method according to claim 57, wherein calculating the frequency representative of a point comprises calculating a frequency at which the capacitance falls beneath a predetermined value.

59. A method according to claim 57, wherein calculating the frequency representative of a point comprises calculating a frequency at which the conductance rises above a predetermined value.

60. A method according to claim 57, wherein displaying the map comprises displaying a map in which each point has a value representative of the width between the calculated frequency and a predetermined frequency.
