Abstract

Systems and methods for controlling an underground boring tool involve rotating the boring tool and sensing a parameter of boring tool rotation. The boring tool is also displaced along an underground path and a parameter of boring tool displacement is sensed. Various sensors monitor boring machine activities, boring tool location, orientation, and environmental condition, and geophysical and/or geologic condition of the soil/rock at the excavation site. Data acquired by these sensors is processed by a boring machine controller to provide closed-loop, real-time control of a boring operation. The controller receives the boring tool signal and other sensor signals in real-time and, in response, transmits control signals to each of the rotation and displacement units substantially in real-time so as to control one or both of a rate and a direction of boring tool movement along the underground path.

Claims

1. A system for horizontal excavation, comprising:

a cutting tool moveable by a drill pipe coupled to a driving apparatus that excavates a substantially horizontal bore hole;

a mud system that pumps a drilling fluid through the drill pipe, the drilling fluid transporting excavated material out of the bore hole;

a return mud sensor that senses a property of the drilling fluid exiting the bore hole; and

a controller communicatively coupled to the return mud sensor, mud system, and driving apparatus, the controller, in cooperation with the mud system, modifying a property of the drilling fluid pumped through the drill pipe in response to the sensed drilling fluid property, and the controller modifying cutting tool movement in response to the modification to the drilling fluid property.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the return mud sensor senses a size of excavated material particles in the drilling fluid exiting the bore hole.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the return mud sensor senses a viscosity of the drilling fluid exiting the bore hole.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the return mud sensor senses a density of the drilling fluid exiting the bore hole.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the return mud sensor senses a composition of the drilling fluid exiting the bore hole.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the mud system modifies a plurality of properties of the drilling fluid pumped through the drill pipe in response to the sensed property of the drilling fluid exiting the bore hole.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the mud system modifies a viscosity of the drilling fluid pumped through the drill pipe in response to the sensed property of the drilling fluid exiting the bore hole.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the mud system modifies a delivery rate of the drilling fluid pumped through the drill pipe in response to the sensed property of the drilling fluid exiting the bore hole.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the mud system modifies a composition of the drilling fluid pumped through the drill pipe in response to the sensed property of the drilling fluid exiting the bore hole.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein the mud system modifies a density of the drilling fluid pumped through the drill pipe in response to the sensed property of the drilling fluid exiting the bore hole.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein the return mud sensor comprises an optical sensor.

12. A method of horizontal excavation, comprising:

moving a cutting tool to excavate a substantially horizontal bore hole;

pumping a drilling fluid to the cutting tool, the drilling fluid transporting excavated material out of the bore hole;

sensing a property of the drilling fluid exiting the bore hole;

modifying a property of the drilling fluid pumped to the cutting tool in response to the sensed drilling fluid property; and

automatically adjusting movement of the cutting tool in response to the sensed drilling fluid property or modification to the drilling fluid property.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the sensed property of the drilling fluid exiting the bore hole comprises a size of excavated material particles in the drilling fluid exiting the bore hole.

14. The method of claim 12, wherein the sensed property of the drilling fluid exiting the bore hole comprises a viscosity of the drilling fluid exiting the bore hole.

15. The method of claim 12, wherein the sensed property of the drilling fluid exiting the bore hole comprises a density of the drilling fluid exiting the bore hole.

16. The method of claim 12, wherein the sensed property of the drilling fluid exiting the bore hole comprises a composition of the drilling fluid exiting the bore hole.

17. The method of claim 12, wherein modifying the property of the drilling fluid comprises modifying a plurality of drilling fluid properties pumped to the cutting tool in response to sensing the property of the drilling fluid exiting the bore hole.

18. The method of claim 12, wherein modifying the property of the drilling fluid comprises modifying a viscosity of the drilling fluid pumped to the cutting tool in response to sensing the property of the drilling fluid exiting the bore hole.

19. The method of claim 12, wherein modifying the property of the drilling fluid comprises modifying a delivery rate of the drilling fluid pumped to the cutting tool in response to sensing the property of the drilling fluid exiting the bore hole.

20. The method of claim 12, wherein modifying the property of the drilling fluid comprises modifying a composition of the drilling fluid pumped to the cutting tool in response to sensing the property of the drilling fluid exiting the bore hole.

21. The method of claim 12, wherein sensing the property of the drilling fluid comprises optically sensing the property of the drilling fluid exiting the bore hole.

22. A system for horizontal excavation, comprising:

a cutting tool movable by a drill pipe and driving apparatus that excavates a substantially horizontal bore hole;

a mud system that pumps a drilling fluid through the drill pipe, the drilling fluid transporting excavated material out of the bore hole;

a return mud sensor that senses a property of the drilling fluid exiting the bore hole; and

a controller communicatively coupled to the return mud sensor, mud system, and driving apparatus, the controller modifying cutting tool movement or a property of the drilling fluid pumped through the drill pipe in response to the drilling fluid property sensed by the return mud sensor.

23. The system of claim 22, wherein the controller modifies cutting tool movement as a function of a transport rate of excavated material out of the bore hole.

24. The system of claim 22, wherein the controller modifies cutting tool movement as a function of a percentage of solids in the drilling fluid exiting the bore hole.

25. The system of claim 22, wherein the controller modifies cutting tool movement so that an excavation rate of the cutting tool does not exceed a transport rate of excavated material out of the bore hole.

26. The system of claim 22, wherein the controller modifies a transport rate of excavated material out of the bore hole as a function of cutting tool movement.

27. The system of claim 22, wherein the controller modifies a transport rate of excavated material out of the bore hole as a function of a property of the drilling fluid delivered to the bore hole.

28. The system of claim 22, wherein the controller modifies a rate at which the mud system pumps drilling fluid through the drill pipe.

29. The system of claim 22, wherein the controller modifies a composition of the drilling fluid pumped through the drill pipe.

30. The system of claim 22, wherein the controller modifies a viscosity of the drilling fluid pumped through the drill pipe.

31. The system of claim 22, wherein the controller modifies a pressure of the drilling fluid pumped through the drill pipe.

32. The system of claim 22, wherein the controller modifies a temperature of the drilling fluid pumped through the drill pipe.

33. The system of claim 22, wherein the controller modifies a density of the drilling fluid pumped through the drill pipe.

34. The system of claim 22, wherein the controller modifies two or more of a flow rate, pressure, temperature, viscosity, density, or composition of the drilling fluid pumped through the drill pipe.

35. The system of claim 22, wherein the controller modifies a rate at which drilling fluid is pumped through the drill pipe as a function of a change of volume of the excavated bore hole.

36. A method of horizontal excavation, comprising:

moving a cutting tool to excavate a substantially horizontal bore hole;

pumping a drilling fluid to the cutting tool, the drilling fluid transporting excavated material out of the bore hole;

sensing a property of the drilling fluid exiting the bore hole; and

automatically modifying cutting tool movement or a property of the drilling fluid pumped to the cutting tool in response to the sensed drilling fluid property.

37. The method of claim 36, wherein cutting tool movement is modified as a function of a transport rate of excavated material out of the bore hole.

38. The method of claim 36, wherein cutting tool movement is modified as a function of a percentage of solids in the drilling fluid exiting the bore hole.

39. The method of claim 36, wherein cutting tool movement is modified so that an excavation rate of the cutting tool does not exceed a transport rate of excavated material out of the bore hole.

40. The method of claim 36, wherein a transport rate of excavated material out of the bore hole is modified as a function of cutting tool movement.

41. The method of claim 36, wherein a transport rate of excavated material out of the bore hole is modified as a function of a property of the drilling fluid delivered to the bore hole.

42. The method of claim 36, wherein a rate at which the drilling fluid is pumped to the cutting tool is modified in response to the sensed drilling fluid property.

43. The method of claim 36, wherein a composition of the drilling fluid pumped to the cutting tool is modified in response to the sensed drilling fluid property.

44. The method of claim 36, wherein a viscosity of the drilling fluid pumped to the cutting tool is modified in response to the sensed drilling fluid property.

45. The method of claim 36, wherein a pressure of the drilling fluid pumped to the cutting tool is modified in response to the sensed drilling fluid property.

46. The method of claim 36, wherein a temperature of the drilling fluid pumped to the cutting tool is modified in response to the sensed drilling fluid property.

47. The method of claim 36, wherein a density of the drilling fluid pumped to the cutting tool is modified in response to the sensed drilling fluid property.

48. The method of claim 36, wherein two or more of a flow rate, pressure, temperature, viscosity, density, or composition of the drilling fluid pumped to the cutting tool is modified in response to the sensed drilling fluid property.

49. The method of claim 36, wherein a rate at which drilling fluid is pumped to the cutting tool is modified as a function of a change of volume of the excavated bore hole.
