Abstract

A heat engine is constructed from sheet metal and the like. The heat engine has an outer container and inner container which contains a displacer and a power piston. A plurality of positioning members are provided to dimensionally stabilize the inner and outer containers. By providing positioning members that extend between the inner and the outer containers, a sandwiched construction is obtained which allows the inner and outer containers to reinforce each other thus permitting the use of thin walled containers and improving the thermal efficiency of the heat engine and decreasing the weight of the heat engine.

Claims

1. A heat engine body for a heat engine comprising:

(a) a container defining a sealed region within which a working fluid is circulated when the heat engine is in use, the sealed region having first and second ends which are in fluid flow communication via a working fluid passageway, the first end is at a different temperature than the second end when the heat engine is in use; and

,

(b) a heat exchanger mounted in a portion of the sealed region through which the working fluid travels, the heat exchanger comprising at least one fin extending transversely to the longitudinal direction and having first and second opposed sides and openings there through whereby working fluid flows through the openings from the first opposed side to the second opposed side via the openings to enhance heat transfer between the working fluid and the heat exchanger, when the heat engine is in use.

The heat engine body as claimed in claim 1 wherein the heat engine body further comprises inner and outer spaced apart longitudinally extending walls, each wall having an inner surface and an outer surface, the inner wall surrounding at least the portion of the sealed region within which a displacer moves, the heat exchanger is mounted on at least one of the inner surface of the outer wall and the outer surface of the inner wall whereby the heat exchanger transfers heat between the working fluid and the heat exchanger.

The heat engine body as claimed in claim 1 wherein the heat engine body further comprises a wall surrounding at least one of the first and second ends and having an inner surface and an outer surface, and the heat exchanger is mounted on the inner surface of the wall whereby the heat exchanger transfers heat between a working fluid and the inner wall.

4. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 2 wherein the second end of the inner sealed region is cooler than the first end and the heat exchanger is mounted on the inner wall at a position adjacent the second end of the sealed region.

5. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 1 wherein the heat exchanger comprises a regenerator.

6. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 1 wherein the at least one fin is configured and arranged to permit fluid to flow from the first opposed side to the second opposed side through at least some of the openings and to direct fluid from the second opposed side to the first opposed side.

The heat engine body as claimed in claim 1 wherein the at least one fin has main directing members, the main directing members are configured and arranged to cause a portion of the fluid which has passed through the fin from the first opposed side to the second opposed side to then pass from the second opposed side to the first opposed side.

The heat engine body as claimed in claim 2 wherein the heat engine body further comprises an outer longitudinally extending wall surrounding the sealed region, the wall having an inner surface and an outer surface, the at least one fin is configured and arranged to cause at least a portion of the fluid to swirl around an annular space interior of the outer wall.

The heat engine body as claimed in claim 1 wherein the heat engine body further comprises an outer longitudinally extending wall surrounding the sealed region, the wall having an inner surface and an outer surface and the at least one fin comprises a plurality of longitudinally spaced apart fins, each of which has a wall portion that extends generally transversely to the outer wall.

The heat engine body as claimed in claim 1 wherein the heat engine body further comprises an outer longitudinally extending wall surrounding the sealed region, the outer wall having an inner surface and an outer surface and the at least one fin comprises a helical fin which is provided interior of the outer wall.

11. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 1 wherein each fin is constructed from metal and are prepared by stamping.

12. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 1 wherein each fin has a deformable collar for lockingly engaging at least one wall defining the working fluid passageway.

The heat engine body as claimed in claim 12 wherein the at least one fin is mechanically mounted on the wall by a pressure which is exerted between the fin and the wall which is sufficient to ensure that the rate of heat transfer between the wall and the fins is maintained over the normal operating temperature of the wall.

The heat engine body as claimed in claim 6 wherein at least some of the openings have associated main directing members which have openings which are configured and arranged to cause a portion of the fluid to pass at least twice through the main directing member as the fluid flows through the fin.

The heat engine body as claimed in claim 6 wherein at least some of the openings have associated main directing members, the main directing members having a first side, a second side and openings which are configured and arranged to cause a portion of the fluid to flow unidirectionally from the first side of a main directing member to the second side of the main directing member as the fluid flows through the fin.

The heat engine body as claimed in claim 8 wherein at least some of the openings have associated main directing members which have openings which are configured and arranged to cause a portion of the fluid to pass at least twice through the main directing member as the fluid flows through the fin.

17. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 8 wherein at least some of the openings have associated main directing member, the main directing member having a first side, a second side and openings which are configured and arranged to cause a portion of the fluid to flow unidirectionally from the first side of a main directing member to the second side of the main directing member as the fluid flows through the fin.

18. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 1 wherein the at least one fin has a hub adjacent a wall of the heat engine body and an annular body portion extending away from the hub, and the openings and main directing members are provided in the annular body portion.

19. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 1 wherein the at least one fin has a hub adjacent a wall of the heat engine body and a plurality of blades extending away from the hub, the blades defining the openings through which the fluid flows.

20. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 1 wherein the at least one fin comprises a helical member mounted on a wall of the heat engine body.

34. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 1 wherein the at least one fin has main directing members associated with at least some of the openings.

21. A heat engine body comprising:

(a) an outer member comprising an outer longitudinally extending wall having an outer surface and first and second longitudinally spaced apart ends, the outer wall surrounding an outer cavity;

(b) an inner member spaced from the outer member and comprising an inner longitudinally extending wall surrounding an inner cavity having first and second longitudinally spaced apart ends, the inner longitudinally extending wall having first and second longitudinally spaced apart ends, the first end of the cavity is at a different temperature than the second end of the cavity when the heat engine is in use, the first and second ends of the inner cavity being in fluid flow communication via a passageway, the first and second ends of the inner cavity and the passageway defining a sealed region; and

,

(c) a plurality of members longitudinally spaced apart interior of the heat engine body along on a portion of a wall for transferring heat between a fluid and the wall, the spaced apart members having a surface extending outwardly from the wall, the surface having first and second opposed sides, at least some of the spaced apart members having a plurality of openings, whereby the fluid flows from the first opposed side to the second opposed side through the openings.

22. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 21 wherein the openings have associated main louvres which are configured and arranged to permit fluid to pass from the first opposed side to the second opposed side and to direct fluid from the second opposed side to the first opposed side.

23. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 21 wherein at least some of the spaced apart members are configured and arranged to cause at least a portion of the fluid to flow rotationally through the spaced apart members as heat is transferred between the fluid and the spaced apart members.

24. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 21 wherein the spaced apart members are affixed to the wall by press fitting.

25. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 21 wherein the second end of the inner cavity is cooler than the first end and the spaced apart members are mounted on the wall at a position adjacent the second end of the cavity.

26. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 21 wherein the inner wall has an inner surface and the spaced apart members are mounted on the inner surface of the inner wall whereby the spaced apart members transfer heat between a working fluid which is circulated in the heat engine and the inner wall.

27. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 26 wherein the first end of the inner cavity is warmer than the second end and the spaced apart members are mounted on the inner surface of the inner wall adjacent the first end whereby the transfer heat between the working fluid in the warmer end of the cavity and the inner wall is enhanced.

28. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 26 wherein the second end of the inner cavity is cooler than the first end and the spaced apart members are mounted on the inner surface of the inner wall adjacent the second end whereby the transfer heat between the working fluid in the cooler end of the cavity and the inner wall is enhanced.

29. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 21 wherein the spaced apart members are mounted between the inner and outer walls.

30. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 22 wherein at least one of the main louvres has a first side, a second side and at least one opening having associated sublouvres, the sublouvres are configured and arranged to cause the fluid to flow unidirectionally from one side of a main louvre in which the sublouvres are provided to the other side as the fluid flows through the spaced apart member.

31. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 22 wherein at least one of the main louvres has at least one opening having associated sublouvres, the sublouvres are configured and arranged to cause a portion of the fluid to pass at least twice through the main louvre in which the sublouvres are provided as the fluid flows through the spaced apart member.

32. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 23 wherein the at least one spaced apart member has at least one main louvre, at least one of the main louvres has a first side, a second side and at least one opening having associated sublouvres, the sublouvres are configured and arranged to cause the fluid to flow unidirectionally from one side of a main louvre in which the sublouvres are provided to the other side as the fluid flows through the spaced apart member.

33. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 23 wherein the at least one spaced apart member has at least one main louvre, at least one of the main louvres has at least one opening having associated sublouvres, the sublouvres are configured and arranged to cause a portion of the fluid to pass at least twice through the main louvre in which the sublouvres are provided as the fluid flows through the spaced apart member.

35. The heat engine as claimed in claim 21 wherein the spaced apart members are provided between the inner and outer walls and extends generally parallel to the outer wall.

36. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 35 wherein the spaced apart members are mounted to one of the inner and outer walls.

37. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 36 wherein the spaced apart members are mounted to both the inner and outer walls.

38. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 21 wherein at least some of the openings have associated main louvres and at least one of the main louvres has at least one opening having associated sublouvres.

39. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 21 wherein the openings have associated main louvres.

40. A heat engine body comprising:

(a) a container defining a sealed region within which a working fluid is circulated when the heat engine is in use, the sealed region having first and second ends which are in fluid flow communication via a working fluid passageway, the first end is at a different temperature than the second end when the heat engine is in use; and

,

(b) the heat engine body having a wall having a surface along which the working fluid flows and at least one fin which is mounted on the wall by press fitting.

41. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 40 wherein the at least one fin is constructed from metal and are prepared by stamping.

42. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 40 wherein the at least one fin has a deformable collar for lockingly engaging the wall.

43. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 40 wherein the wall is thin walled and has an outer surface and the at least one fin extends around the wall to dimensionally stabilize the wall.

44. A heat engine body comprising:

(a) an outer member comprising an outer longitudinally extending wall having an outer surface and an inner surface and first and second longitudinally spaced apart ends;

(b) a sealed region positioned internally within the outer wall within which a working fluid is circulated when the heat engine is in use, the sealed region having first and second longitudinally spaced apart ends which are in fluid flow communication via a working fluid passageway, the first end of the sealed region is at a different temperature than the second end of the sealed region when the heat engine is in use; and

,

(c) a heat exchange member positioned adjacent the inner surface of the outer wall and comprising a longitudinally extending member having first and second longitudinally extending opposed sides and a plurality of openings, the openings have associated main louvres.

45. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 44 wherein the main louvers are configured and arranged to direct fluid to flow from the first opposed side to the second opposed side and to direct fluid from the second opposed side to the first opposed side as the fluid flows longitudinally through the heat engine body.

46. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 44 wherein the main louvers are configured and arranged to direct fluid to flow rotationally through the spaced apart members as the fluid flows longitudinally through the heat engine body.

47. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 44 wherein at least one of the main louvres has a first side, a second side and at least one opening having associated sublouvres.

48. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 45 wherein at least one of the main louvres has a first side, a second side and at least one opening having associated sublouvres, the sublouvres are configured and arranged to cause the fluid to flow unidirectionally from one side of a main louvre in which the sublouvres are provided to the other side as the fluid flows through the spaced apart member.

49. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 45 wherein at least one of the main louvres has a first side, a second side and at least one opening having associated sublouvres, the sublouvres are configured and arranged to cause a portion of the fluid to pass at least twice through the main louvre in which the sublouvres are provided as the fluid flows through the spaced apart member.

50. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 46 wherein at least one of the main louvres has a first side, a second side and at least one opening having associated sublouvres, the sublouvres are configured and arranged to cause the fluid to flow unidirectionally from one side of a main louvre in which the sublouvres are provided to the other side as the fluid flows through the spaced apart member.

51. The heat engine body as claimed in claim 46 wherein at least one of the main louvres has a first side, a second side and at least one opening having associated sublouvres, the sublouvres are configured and arranged to cause a portion of the fluid to pass at least twice through the main louvre in which the sublouvres are provided as the fluid flows through the spaced apart member.
