Infusion device with disposable elements
First Claim
1. A programmable infusion system, comprising:
- disposable IV tubing means for conveying intravenous fluid from an IV fluid container to a patient and having an intermediate pliant segment;
a compact, portable case having a receptacle for removably receiving the intermediate pliant segment of the disposable IV tubing means;
peristaltic pump means mounted in the case for engaging the intermediate pliant segment of the disposable IV tubing means and pumping intravenous fluid therethrough;
motor means mounted in the case for driving the peristaltic pump means upon energization thereof;
bar code reader means for sensing a bar code label representing a plurality of fluid delivery parameters when the case is passed over the label and for generating bar code signals representative thereof; and
control means mounted in the case for receiving the bar code signals and for energizing the motor means so that the peristaltic pump means will pump the intravenous fluid through the intermediate pliant segment of the disposable IV tubing means in accordance with the fluid delivery parameters.

Abstract
An infusion device with a disposable administration set which is inexpensive to manufacture which set can be slidably inserted and removed from a housing, and which is programmable, is provided. In the preferred embodiment of the present invention the disposable administration set has a plurality of elongated cam followers connected to a plate assembly, wherein the cam followers are displaced in a predetermined sequence and forced against a delivery tube by cam means driven by rotary drive means. The disposable administration set is injection molded as a single integral piece. The disposable administration set includes adjustment spacers disposed between the plate assembly and the cam followers which adjust the distance between them to keep the device accurate. In the preferred embodiment of the present invention the cam means are configured to provide fluid delivery at a consistent and uniform rate. A bar code label as provided on the disposable administration set and a bar coder reader is provided on the housing of the infusion device for reading fluid delivery parameters when the administration set is slidably inserted into the housing.
