Abstract

The present invention is directed to a prosthesis for implantation within a body lumen. The prosthesis includes a biocompatible elongate intraluminal liner in the form of a graft, with a biocompatible adhesive being disposed on an exterior surface of the graft. The adhesive is active in an intraluminal environment so as to bond the exterior surface of the graft to an intraluminal surface of said body lumen, such as the interior of a blood vessel.

Claims

1. A prosthesis for implantation within a body lumen, comprising:

a biocompatible elongate intraluminal liner, said liner including an elongate tubular body having an interior surface and an exterior surface;

a mechanical support disposed along said interior surface of said tubular body to position said tubular body in an open position; and

a biocompatible adhesive, said adhesive being disposed on said exterior surface of said liner, said adhesive being active in an intraluminal environment so as to bond said exterior surface of said liner to an intraluminal surface of said body lumen.

2. The prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said adhesive is bioabsorbable.

3. The prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said adhesive is a curable polymer adhesive.

4. The prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said adhesive is a pressure sensitive adhesive.

5. The prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said adhesive is selected from the group consisting of polyurethanes, cyanoacrylates, silicones, (meth)acrylates, and combinations thereof.

6. The prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said adhesive is a biological sealant capable of bonding said liner to said intraluminal surface of said body lumen.

7. The prosthesis of claim 6, wherein said biological sealant is selected from the group consisting of fibrin, collagen, poly(L-glutamic acid), gelatin based hydrogels, N-vinyl pyrrolidone, and mixtures and combinations thereof.

The prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said adhesive is held within frangible encapsulants, said encapsulants being disposed on said exterior surface of said tubular body and being capable of rupturing when compressed between said tubular body and said lumen so as to release said adhesive and thereby bonding said exterior surface of said liner to an intraluminal surface of said body lumen.

9. The prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said liner includes a plurality of pores sufficient to permit the ingrowth of body tissue.

10. The prosthesis of claim 9, wherein said adhesive is disposed through at least one of said pores in said liner.

11. The prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said mechanical support is removable from said tubular body.

12. The prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said mechanical support is bioabsorbable.

13. The prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said mechanical support is positioned at least one longitudinal end of said tubular body.

14. The prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said mechanical support is positioned at an upstream end of said tubular body.

15. The prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said mechanical support is provided at both longitudinal ends of said tubular body.

16. The prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said liner includes a plurality of pores sufficient to permit the ingrowth of body tissue, and wherein said adhesive extends through said pores and bonds said mechanical support to said liner.

17. The prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said mechanical support comprises a radially expandable stent.

18. The prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said mechanical support comprises a porous polymeric band.

19. The prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said liner comprises an extruded tube.

20. The prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said liner is formed from a polymeric sheet.

21. The prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said liner comprises a textile tubular body.

22. The prosthesis of claim 21, wherein said textile tubular body is formed from a weave, knit, or braid construction.

23. The prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said tubular body is formed from spun filaments.

24. The prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said liner is formed from a material selected from the group consisting of polyesters, polypropylencs, polycthylenes, polyurethanes, polytetrafluorocthylenes, polycarbonate-polyurethanes, poly-alpha-hydroxy-acids, and combinations thereof.

25. The prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said liner is expandable from an insertion diameter to an implantation diameter greater than said insertion diameter so that at the implantation diameter said liner is conformable to the intraluminal surface of said body lumen.

26. The prosthesis of claim 1, further including a removable cover over said adhesive.

27. The prosthesis of claim 1, further including a concentric tubular body within said liner.

28. The prosthesis of claim 27, further including a mechanical support between said concentric tubular body and said liner.

29. A method of implanting a prosthesis within a venal wall comprising the steps of:

providing a prosthesis comprising an intraluminal liner having an expandable mechanical support disposal along an interior surface thereof, and a biocompatible adhesive disposed on an exterior surface of said liner, said biocompatible adhesive being active in an intraluminal environment;

delivering said prosthesis to an area of implantation; and

expanding said prosthesis so as to cause said adhesive on said exterior surface of said liner to contact an interior surface of the venal wall, thereby causing said adhesive to bond said liner to said venal wall.
