Packet switching system having self-routing switches
First Claim
1. A packet transferring method of a communication system including a plurality of communication apparatuses, each of the communication apparatuses having a plurality of packet lines, a memory which stores connection information for connecting the each communication apparatus to transmit a packet, a switch for switching the packet according to the connection information and a packet controller which controls giving and restoring of connection information to a packet, said method comprising the steps of:
- deciding a connection for transferring a packet from an input packet line of an originating communication apparatus to an output packet line of a destination communication apparatus according to a predetermined rule;
storing connection information for transmitting the packet to the destination communication apparatus along the decided connection according to connection information stored in each of the memories which exists in each of the originating and destination communication apparatuses on the decided connection;
allowing the packet to hold new connection information at the originating communication apparatus;
transferring the packet to the destination communication apparatus according to the new connection information;
removing, at the destination communication apparatus, the new connection information from the packet; and
outputting the packet to the output packet line of the destination communication apparatus.

Abstract
In a packet switching system made up of a single or a plurality of switching nodes or local units each including a label conversion unit for accommodating a plurality of packet circuits and performing conversion into output port information of a switch on the basis of a logic channel on a packet circuit, a self-routing switch for performing switching on the basis of the output port information, land a control unit for terminating a control packet and performing the call processing function, and a switching node or tandem unit including a single or a plurality of self-routing switches for interconnecting the local units, there are provided a device for setting, between the tandem unit and a destination-side local unit, the same logic channel as that between an originating-side local unit operative for information transfer and the tandem unit in respect of a call destined for a local unit other than this local unit and a device, operable in the originating side local unit for information transfer, for inserting output port information of the self-routing switch inside the tandem unit into a packet destined for the local unit other than this local unit, whereby in the tandem unit, setting of logic channel conversion information is not required to be done and even when any control signal packet from the originating-side local unit arrives at the tandem unit, the packet is transferred to the destination-side local unit without undergoing termination of packet and concomitant call processing control.

2. A packet transferring method of a communication system including a plurality of packet receiving portions and packet outputting portions, a plurality of packet controllers, each of which controls giving and restoring of connection information to a packet, a plurality of memories each storing connection information, and a plurality of switches for switching the packet according to the connection information, said method comprising the steps of:
-
deciding a connection for transferring a packet from a packet receiving portion to a packet output portion according to a predetermined rule;
storing connection information for transmitting the packet to the packet outputting portion along the decided connection in each of first and second memories which exist on the decided connection;
allowing the packet to hold the connection information at a first packet controller which is connected to the packet receiving portion;
transferring the packet to the packet outputting portion according to the connection information;
removing, at a second packet controller which is connected to the packet outputting portion, the new connection information from the packet; and
outputting the packet to a packet network from the packet outputting portion.

3. A packet transferring method of transferring packets between communication terminals connected to a communication network which includes a plurality of communication apparatuses each having a plurality of packet lines and a switch which routes a packet based on a connection identifier in a packet, comprising the steps of:
-
receiving a packet in a first communication apparatus connected to an originating communication terminal;
deciding by said first communication apparatus a connection on which communication is to be conducted between said originating communication terminal and a destination communication terminal through a second communication apparatus connected to said first communication apparatus via said communication network, said second communication apparatus being connected to said destination communication terminal, storing connection identifiers corresponding to the decided connection in a memory in each of said first and second communication apparatuses;
adding to said packet from said originating communication terminal in said first communication apparatus one of the connection identifiers stored in the memory to permit the packet to be routed by switches in said first and second communication apparatuses to said destination communication terminal;
transmitting the packet with the connection identifier from said first communication apparatus to said second communication apparatus;
receiving said packet with the connection identifiers in said second communication apparatus from said first communication apparatus;
removing from said packet the connection identifier added by said first communication apparatus to place said packet in its original form; and
outputting said packet to said destination communication terminal on one of the packet lines of said second communication apparatus.
