Abstract

A connector platform includes a base having a first end and opposing second end. A retention wall upwardly projects from the first end of the base and has a plurality of slots longitudinally extending therein. A plurality of resiliently flexible conducting wires each have a first end projecting from the first end of the base and a securing portion extending from the first end of the base to the second end thereof. Each conducting wire further includes an engaging portion upwardly projecting from the second end of the base to the retention wall. A second end of each conducting wire is freely disposed within a corresponding slot of the retention wall. The platform is selectively enclosed within the housing of an electrical apparatus. The housing defines an opening which provides access to the platform. The opening and platform combine to form a receptacle configured to receive a standard RJ-type plug.

Claims

1. A device that facilitates electrical communication with a RJ series connector plug, the device comprising:

a housing including a rear portion that forms at least a portion of an outer surface of the device, the rear portion of the housing including a height;

a printed circuit board at least partially enclosed within the housing, the printed circuit board including a rear portion proximate the rear portion of the housing;

a receptacle formed in the rear portion of the housing, the receptacle including an opening defined by the rear portion of the housing and two or more opposing surfaces thereof, the receptacle being sized and configured to receive at least a portion of the connector plug, the receptacle including one or more surfaces that are adapted to contact at least a portion of the connector plug when it is received within the receptacle; and

a substantially sideless connector block connected to the rear portion of the printed circuit board proximate the receptacle, the connector block having a height generally less than the height of the rear portion of the housing.

2. The device as in claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the connector block is adapted to limit the insertion of the connector plug into the receptacle in the rear portion of the housing.

3. The device as in claim 1, wherein the one or more surfaces of the receptacle are adapted to physically support the connector plug within the housing of the device.

4. The device as in claim 1, further comprising a generally planar section on a lower surface of the connector block, the generally planar section being connected to an upper surface of the printed circuit board.

5. The device as in claim 1, wherein the connector block is configured to be surface mounted on the rear portion of the printed circuit board.

6. The device as in claim 1, further comprising a conducting wire, the conducting wire including a first end connected to the printed circuit board and a second end disposed within the receptacle, the conducting wire being capable of electrically connecting the printed circuit board to the connector plug when it is received within the receptacle.

7. The device as in claim 6, further comprising a slot located in the connector block, the conducting wire being at least partially disposed within the slot.

8. An electrical apparatus operable with a RJ series connector plug, the apparatus comprising:

a housing including a rear portion that forms at least a portion of an outer surface of the electrical apparatus;

a receptacle formed in the rear portion of the housings, the receptacle including an opening defined by the rear portion of the housing and being adapted to receive at least a portion of the plug, the receptacle including a surface that is adapted to contact at least a portion of the plug when it is received within the receptacle;

a printed circuit board at least partially disposed within the housing; and

a substantially sideless connector block connected to the printed circuit board proximate the receptacle, the connector block configured to allow electrical communication between the printed circuit board and the plug when it is received within the receptacle.

The electrical apparatus as in claim 8, wherein the connector block further includes a first portion and a second portion, the first portion being connected to the printed circuit board proximate to the receptacle, the second portion extending from the first portion and having a height generally less than a height of the housing.

10. The electrical apparatus as in claim 8, further comprising a plurality of conducting wires, each of the plurality of conducting wires having a first end that is connected to the printed circuit board and a second end that is configured to electrically contact the plug when it is received within the receptacle.

11. An electrical apparatus operable with a RJ series connector plug, the apparatus comprising:

a housing including a rear portion that forms at least a portion of an outer surface of the electrical apparatus;

a receptacle formed in the rear portion of the housing, the receptacle including an opening defined by the rear portion of the housing and being adapted to receive at least a portion of the plug, the receptacle including one or more surfaces that are adapted to contact at least a portion of the connector plug when it is received within the receptacle;

a printed circuit board at least partially disposed within the housing; and

a substantially sideless connector block at least partially disposed within the housing, the connector block being generally aligned with the receptacle, the connector block including;

a first portion mounted on the printed circuit board, the first portion being positioned proximate to the receptacle; and

a second portion extending from the first portion, the second portion being sized and configured to fit within the housing.

12. The electrical apparatus as in claim 11, wherein the connector block is surface mounted to the printed circuit board using pick and place technology.

13. The electrical apparatus as in claim 11, wherein the receptacle is at least partially defined by two opposing surfaces;

and wherein the receptacle is adapted to receive the plug such that at least one of the opposing surfaces contacts a portion of the plug when it is received within the receptacle.

14. The electrical apparatus as in claim 11, further comprising a generally planar section on a lower surface of the first portion of the connector block, the generally planar section being mounted on an upper surface of the printed circuit board.

15. The electrical apparatus as in claim 11, wherein the connector block is configured to be surface mounted on a rear portion of the printed circuit board.

16. The electrical apparatus as in claim 11, further comprising a conducting wire having a first end and a second end, the conducting wire being capable of electrically connecting the printed circuit board to the plug received within the receptacle in the housing.

17. The electrical apparatus as in claim 16, wherein the first end of the conducting wire is positioned generally parallel to a top surface of the printed circuit board and wherein the first end of the conducting wire is connected to an electrical contact located on the top surface of the printed circuit board.

18. An electrical apparatus operable with a RJ series connector plug, the plug including a generally rectangular body and a retention arm, the apparatus comprising:

a housing including a rear portion;

a receptacle formed in the rear portion of the housing, the receptacle including an opening defined by the rear portion of the housing and being adapted to receive at least a portion of the plug, the receptacle including one or more surfaces that are adapted to contact the body of the plug when it is received within the receptacle;

a printed circuit board at least partially disposed within the housing; and

a substantially sideless connector block at least partially disposed within the housing, the connector block being positioned proximate the receptacle, the connector block including;

a first portion connected to the printed circuit board, the first portion being positioned proximate to the receptacle; and

a second portion extending from the first portion, the second portion being sized and configured to fit within the housing.

19. The electrical apparatus as in claim 18, further comprising a conducting wire having a first end and a second end, the conducting wire being adapted to electrically connect the printed circuit board to the plug when it is received within the receptacle.

20. The electrical apparatus as in claim 18, further comprising surface mounting the first portion of the connector block to a rear portion of the printed circuit board.

21. An electrical device includes a housing that forms at least a portion of an outer surface of the electrical device and at least a portion of a receptacle that is formed in the outer surface of the housing, the receptacle including an opening defined by the outer surface of the housing and being adapted to receive at least a portion of a standard RJ-type connector plug, the receptacle includes two or more surfaces that are adapted to contact a portion of the RJ-type connector plug when it is received within the receptacle, the electrical device also includes a substantially sideless connector block that is at least partially disposed within the housing and the connector block facilitates electrical communication between the electrical device and the RJ-type connector plug, the connector block comprising:

a base positioned proximate the receptacle and attached to a printed circuit board;

a wall extending from the base and fitting within a height of the housing; and

at least one conducting wire disposed proximate the base, the at least one conducting wire including a first end electrically connected to the printed circuit board and a second end electrically connected to the RJ-type connector plug when it is received within the receptacle.

22. The connector block as in claim 21, wherein the first end of the at least one conducting wire is adapted to be positioned generally parallel to an upper surface of the printed circuit board.

23. The connector block as in claim 21, further comprising at least one slot located in the outwardly extending portion, the at least one conducting wire being disposed within the at least one slot.

24. The connector block as in claim 21, wherein the two opposing surfaces of the receptacle are adapted to physically support the RJ-type connector plug within the housing of the electrical device.

25. The connector block as in claim 21, further comprising a generally planar section on a lower surface of the base that is adapted to be connected to an upper surface of the printed circuit board.

26. The connector block as in claim 21, wherein the outwardly extending portion and the base are constructed as a unitary, one-piece structure.

27. The connector block as in claim 21, wherein the housing includes a rear portion, the receptacle being formed in the rear portion of the housing.

28. The connector block as in claim 21, wherein the base is configured to be surface mounted to the printed circuit board.

29. An apparatus that facilitates electrical communication with a RJ-type connector plug, the apparatus comprising

a housing including a rear portion;

a receptacle formed in an outer surface of the housing, the receptacle including an opening defined by the outer surface of the housing, the receptacle being adapted to receive at least a portion of the RJ-type connector plug, the receptacle including a surface that is adapted to contact at least a portion of the RJ-type connector plug when it is received within the receptacle;

a printed circuit board at least partially disposed within an interior portion of the housing, the printed circuit board including an upper surface and a lower surface;

a substantially sideless connector block connected to the printed circuit board proximate the receptacle, the connector block being at least partially disposed within the interior portion of the housing; and

a plurality of wires connected to the printed circuit board, the plurality of wires being capable of conveying electrical signals between the printed circuit board and the RJ-type connector plug when the plug is received within the receptacle.

30. The apparatus as in claim 29, wherein each wire from the plurality of wires includes a first end and a second end, the first end being electrically connected to the printed circuit board and the second end being adapted to be electrically connected to the RJ-type connector plug received within the receptacle.

31. The apparatus as in claim 29, wherein the connector block is generally aligned with at least a portion of the receptacle.

32. The apparatus as in claim 29, further comprising a generally planar section on a lower surface of the connector block that is mounted on the upper surface of the printed circuit board.

33. The apparatus as in claim 29, wherein the connector block includes a base and an outwardly extending portion.

34. The apparatus as in claim 33, further comprising a plurality of slots located in the outwardly extending portion, the plurality of slots receiving the plurality of wires connected to the printed circuit board.

35. A method of making a device that facilitates electrical communication with a connector plug, the method comprising:

providing a housing with a rear portion that forms at least a portion of an outer surface of the device, the rear portion of the housing including a height;

disposing a printed circuit board at least partially within the housing, the printed circuit board including a rear portion disposed within the rear portion of the housing;

providing a receptacle that is formed in the rear portion of the housing, the receptacle including an opening defined by the rear portion of the housing and two or more opposing surfaces thereof, the receptacle being sized and configured to receive at least a portion of the connector plug, the receptacle including one or more surfaces that are adapted to contact at least a portion of the connector plug when it is received within the receptacle; and

connecting a substantially sideless connector block to the rear portion of the printed circuit board proximate the receptacle, the connector block having a height generally less than the height of the rear end of the housing.

36. The method as in claim 35, further comprising a conducting wire including a first end connected to the printed circuit board and a second end disposed within the receptacle, the conducting wire being capable of electrically connecting the printed circuit board to the connector plug when it is received within the receptacle.

37. The method as in claim 36, further comprising providing a slot in the connector block, the conducting wire being at least partially disposed within the slot.

38. The method as in claim 36, wherein at least a portion of the connector block is adapted to limit the insertion of the connector plug into the receptacle formed in the rear portion of the housing.

39. The method as in claim 35, wherein the one or more surfaces of the receptacle are adapted to physically support the connector plug within the housing of the device.

40. The method as in claim 35, further comprising providing a generally planar section on a lower surface of the connector block and connecting the generally planar section to an upper surface of the printed circuit board.

41. The device as in claim 35, wherein the connector block is configured to be surface mounted on the rear portion of the printed circuit board.

42. A method of making an electrical apparatus that is operable with a RJ series connector plug, the method comprising:

providing a housing with a rear portion that forms at least a portion of an outer surface of the electrical apparatus;

providing a receptacle that is formed in;

the rear portion of the housing, the receptacle including an opening defined by the rear portion of the housing and being adapted to receive at least a portion of the plug, the receptacle including a surface that is adapted to contact at least a portion of the plug when it is received within the receptacle;

disposing a printed circuit board at least partially within the housing; and

connecting a substantially sideless connector block to the printed circuit board proximate the receptacle, the connector block being configured to allow electrical communication between the printed circuit board and the plug when it is received within the receptacle.

43. The method as in claim 42, wherein the connector block further includes a first portion and a second portion, the first portion being connected to the printed circuit board proximate to the receptacle, the second portion extending from the first portion and having a height generally less than a height of the housing.

44. The method as in claim 42, further comprising providing a plurality of conducting wires, each of the plurality of conducting wires having a first end that is connected to the printed circuit board and a second end that is configured to electrically contact the plug when it is received within the receptacle.

45. A method of making an electrical apparatus that is operable with a RJ series connector plug, the method comprising:

providing a housing with a rear portion that forms at least a portion of an outer surface of the electrical apparatus;

providing a receptacle that is formed in the rear portion of the housing, the receptacle including an opening defined by the rear portion of the housing and being adapted to receive the plug, the receptacle including one or more surfaces that are adapted to contact at least a portion of the connector plug when it is received within the receptacle;

disposing a printed circuit board at least partially within the housing; and

disposing a substantially sideless connector block at least partially within the housing, the connector block being generally aligned with the receptacle, the connector block including;

a first portion mounted on the printed circuit board, the first portion being positioned proximate to the receptacle; and

a second portion extending from to the first portion, the second portion being sized and configured to fit within the housing.

46. The method as in claim 45, wherein the connector block is surface mounted to the printed circuit board using pick and place technology.

47. The method as in claim 45, wherein the receptacle is at least partially defined by two opposing surfaces;

and wherein the receptacle is adapted to receive the plug such that at least one of the opposing surfaces contacts a portion of the plug when it is received within the receptacle.

48. The method as in claim 45, further comprising providing a generally planar section on a lower surface of the first portion of the connector block, the generally planar section being mounted on an upper surface of the printed circuit board.

49. The method as in claim 45, wherein the connector block is configured to be surface mounted on a rear portion of the printed circuit board.

50. The method as in claim 45, further comprising providing a conducting wire having a first end and a second end, the conducting wire being capable of electrically connecting the printed circuit board to the plug received within the receptacle in the housing.

51. The method as in claim 50, wherein the first end of the conducting wire is positioned generally parallel to a top surface of the printed circuit board and wherein the first end of the conducting wire is connected to an electrical contact located on the top surface of the printed circuit board.

52. A method of making an electrical apparatus that is operable with a RJ series connector plug, the plug including a generally rectangular body and a retention arm, the method comprising;

providing a housing with a rear portion;

providing a receptacle that is formed in the rear portion of the housing, the receptacle including an opening defined by the rear portion of the housing and being adapted to receive at least a portion of the plug, the receptacle including one or more surfaces that are adapted to contact the body of the plug when it is received within the receptacle;

disposing a printed circuit board at least partially within the housing; and

disposing a substantially sideless connector block at least partially within the housing, the connector block being positioned proximate the receptacle, the connector block including;

a first portion connected to the printed circuit board, the first portion being positioned proximate to the receptacle; and

a second portion extending from the first portion, the second portion being sized and configured to fit within the housing.

53. The method as in claim 52, further comprising providing a conducting wire with a first end and a second end, the conducting wire being adapted to electrically connect the printed circuit board to the plug when it is received within the receptacle.

54. The method as in claim 53, further comprising surface mounting the first portion of the connector block to a rear portion of the printed circuit board.

55. A method of making an electrical device with a housing that forms at least a portion of an outer surface of the electrical device and at least a portion of a receptacle that is formed in the outer surface of the housing, the receptacle including an opening defined by the outer surface of the housing and being adapted to receive at least a portion of a standard RJ-type connector plug, the receptacle includes two or more surfaces that are adapted to contact a portion of the RJ-type connector plug when it is received within the receptacle, the electrical device also includes a substantially sideless connector block that is at least partially disposed within the housing and the connector block facilitates electrical communication between the electrical device and the RJ-type connector plug, the method comprising:

providing a base positioned proximate the receptacle and attached to a printed circuit board;

providing a wall that extends from the base and fitting within a height of the housing; and

providing at least one conducting wire disposed proximate the base, the at least one conducting wire including a first end electrically connected to the printed circuit board and a second end electrically connected to the RJ-type connector plug when it is received within the receptacle.

56. The method as in claim 55, wherein the first end of the at least one conducting wire is adapted to be positioned generally parallel to an upper surface of the printed circuit board.

57. The method as in claim 55, further comprising providing at least one slot in the outwardly extending portion, the at least one conducting wire being disposed within the at least one slot.

58. The method as in claim 55, wherein the two or more surfaces of the receptacle are adapted to physically support the RJ-type connector plug within the housing of the electrical device.

59. The method as in claim 55, further comprising providing a generally planar section on a lower surface of the base that is adapted to be connected to an upper surface of the printed circuit board.

60. The method as in claim 55, wherein the outwardly extending portion and the base are constructed as a unitary, one-piece structure.

61. The method as in claim 55 wherein the housing includes with a rear portion, the receptacle being formed in the rear portion of the housing.

62. The method as in claim 55, wherein the base is configured to be surface mounted to the printed circuit board.

63. A method of making an apparatus that facilitates electrical communication with a RJ-type connector plug, the method comprising:

providing a housing with a rear portion;

providing a receptacle that is formed in an outer surface of the housing, the receptacle including an opening defined by the outer surface of the housing, the receptacle being adapted to receive at least a portion of the RJ-type connector plug, the receptacle including a surface that is adapted to contact at least a portion of the RJ-type connector plug when it is received within the receptacle;

disposing a printed circuit board at least partially within an interior portion of the housing, the printed circuit board including an upper surface and a lower surface;

connecting a substantially sideless connector block to the printed circuit board proximate the receptacle, the connector block being at least partially disposed within the interior portion of the housing; and

connecting a plurality of wires to the printed circuit board, the plurality of wires being capable of conveying electrical signals between the printed circuit board and the RJ-type connector plug when the plug is received within the receptacle.

64. The method as in claim 63, wherein the connector block includes a base and an outwardly extending portion.

65. The method as in claim 63, further comprising providing a plurality of slots in the outwardly extending portion, the plurality of slots receiving the plurality of wires connected to the printed circuit board.

66. The method as in claim 63, wherein each wire from the plurality of wires includes a first end and a second end, the first end being electrically connected to the printed circuit board and the second end being adapted to be electrically connected to the RJ-type connector plug received within the receptacle.

67. The method as in claim 63, wherein the connector block is generally aligned with at least a portion of the receptacle.

68. The method as in claim 63, further comprising providing a generally planar section on a lower surface of the connector block that is mounted proximate an edge of the printed circuit board.
