Abstract

An internal combustion powered tool, such as a nail or fastener driver, and a control system, spark source, and rotary valve for use in an internal combustion powered tool are disclosed. The tool may include, for example, a cylinder and a piston reciprocally moveable within the cylinder. A combustion chamber is defined at one end of the cylinder, with the piston comprising a portion of one end of the combustion chamber. The tool may have a fastener driver associated with the piston, and a magazine for feeding fasteners into registration with the driver. A fuel flow passageway extends between a fuel source and the combustion chamber, and a metering valve controls the flow of fuel to the combustion chamber. A spark source within the combustion chamber is provided for igniting the fuel, and an intake and exhaust valve that includes a pair of diametrically opposed apertures is provided. At least one fan external to the combustion chamber induces an intake of fresh air into the combustion chamber through one of the apertures and an exhaust of combustion products from the combustion chamber through the other aperture. Claims

1. An internal combustion fastener driver for driving fasteners comprising:

a cylinder and a piston reciprocally movable within said cylinder;

a combustion chamber defined at one end of said cylinder, said combustion chamber including first and second opposite ends and a side wall extending therebetween, said piston comprising a portion of said first end of said combustion chamber, at least one aperture defined in a selected location in said combustion chamber for communication between said combustion chamber and the ambient atmosphere; and

a valve member reciprocally movable within said combustion chamber between a first, open position and a second, closed position for opening and closing communication between said combustion chamber and said aperture.

2. The fastener driver of claim 1 in which said valve member comprises a piston valve located at said second end of said combustion chamber, said second end of said combustion chamber defining a recess for receiving at least a portion of said piston valve in said closed position.

The fastener driver of claim 2 comprising a pair of apertures defined in said second end of said combustion chamber, said piston valve being reciprocally movable between an open position that allows communication through said apertures between the combustion chamber and ambient atmosphere and a closed position that blocks such communication.

4. The fastener driver of claim 1 further comprising means external to said combustion chamber for directing air through said aperture when said valve member is open.

5. The fastener driver of claim 4 wherein said directing means comprises a fan or blower.

The fastener driver of claim 1 comprising a pair of apertures defined in said combustion chamber, said valve member being reciprocally movable between an open position that allows communication through said apertures between the combustion chamber and ambient atmosphere and a closed position that blocks such communication.

7. The fastener driver of claim 1 further comprising:

a pinion gear; and

a gear rack associated with said valve member and cooperatively engaging said pinion gear so that rotation of said pinion gear moves said gear rack and said valve member between its closed and open positions.

The fastener driver of claim 1 wherein said valve member moves into said combustion chamber as it moves between said second closed position and said first open position, wherein reduced air pressure due to cooling of the combustion chamber after ignition assists in moving the valve member to said first open position.
