First Claim
1. A collapsible filter system comprising:
- a) a mandrel having a distal end and a proximal end; and
b) a filter carried along the mandrel, the filter comprising a radially expandable body having a proximal end a distall end, the body being formed of a porous, resilient fabric having pores therein through which a body fluid may pass, but which restrict passage therethrough of particulate material entrained in the body fluid;
c) a proximally oriented hole passing through the fabric along a proximal length of the filter'"'"'s body, the hole being spaced distally along a proximal end of the body and being at least about ten times the size of said pores.

Abstract
Filter systems and a method of deploying a medical filter within a channel in a patient'"'"'s body, the filter systems include a filter having a radially expandable body with an opening in a proximal length thereof. The filter is urged along a length of the channel with the filter body in a radially reduced configuration. The filter body is expanded to substantially fill the lumen of the vessel and orient the opening in the body proximally. Body fluid is permitted to enter the filter body through the proximally oriented opening and pass distally through the distal length of the body so that the distal length of the body filters from the body fluid particulate material entrained therein. The proximal length of the body can be drawn into the retrieval catheter, thereby effectively closing the proximally oriented opening within the catheter to retain the particulate material within the enclosure. The filter body is formed of a porous, resilient fabric having pores therein and the proximal opening is at least five times the size of such pores.
