Method and apparatus for measuring values of physiological parameters
First Claim
1. A method for measuring a value of a blood pressure of a patient, the method comprising:
- a) under automatic control, performing a sequence of three or more measurements of the blood pressure at spaced apart times to obtain three or more measured values for the blood pressure; and
b) computing a best estimate of the blood pressure from two or more of the measured values without using a first one of the measured values in computing the best estimate.

Abstract
Apparatus for measuring a physiological parameter of a patient, such as blood pressure, takes a sequence consisting of a predetermined number of individual measurements. The apparatus computes a best estimate of the physiological parameter from values obtained in two or more of the measurements. The apparatus automatically takes a sequence of measurements and then stops. The apparatus can operate unattended so that it is not necessary for a physician or other health care worker to be present while measurements are being made. The use of the invention to measure blood pressure of a patient reduces the effect of “white coat” hypertension on the best estimate. Preferred embodiments of the apparatus ignore results of a first measurement in the sequence. The patient is already familiar with the apparatus when subsequent measurements are taken. This further reduces the possibility that the patient'"'"'s reaction to the process of measurement will affect the results of the measurement.

4. A method for obtaining a measurement of a patient'"'"'s blood pressure, the method comprising:
-
a) providing a programmed computer connected to a blood pressure measurement device comprising an inflatable cuff;
b) placing the inflatable cuff around a limb of the patient;
c) causing the blood pressure measurement device to make a sequence of measurements of the patient'"'"'s blood pressure under control of the computer, the sequence consisting of a predetermined number of measurements, and storing results of the measurements in a memory accessible to the computer;
d) in the computer, calculating a best estimate of the patient'"'"'s blood pressure from the results of the measurements; and
,e) displaying the best estimate on a display, wherein calculating a best estimate of the patient'"'"'s blood pressure comprises calculating a best estimate of the patient'"'"'s blood pressure from a plurality of the results which does not include a result of a first made measurement in the sequence. - View Dependent Claims (5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12)

13. An apparatus for measuring a physiological parameter of a patient, the apparatus comprising:
-
a) a measuring means for measuring a value of a physiological parameter;
b) a controller connected to the measuring means, the controller adapted to cause the measuring means to make a sequence consisting of a predetermined number of measurements of the physiological parameter;
c) a memory for receiving and storing measured values of the physiological parameter;
d) calculation means for determining a best estimate of the physiological parameter from a plurality of the measured values; and
,e) a display for displaying the best estimate, wherein the controller comprises a timer and a counter, the timer having a time constant which determines a time between sequential measurements in the sequence, the counter counting the measurements made by the measuring means, and wherein the best estimate is calculated without reference to a first measured value measured by the measuring means. - View Dependent Claims (14, 15, 16)
