1. An organic electroluminescent device of the type which comprises an organic layer which has a luminescent region and is provided between an anode and a cathode and which contains, as an essential component, an organic material capable of generating luminescence by application, of an electric current, wherein said organic layer contains, as an organic luminescent material, a distyryl compound represented by the following general formula (1) or (3) embedded imagewherein R1, R2, R3 and R4 are, respectively, groups which may be the same or different and independently represent an aryl group of the following general formula (2), embedded imagewherein R19, R20, R21, R22 and R23 are, respectively, groups which may be the same or different and may represent a hydrogen atom, provided that at least one of them represents a saturated or unsaturated alkoxyl group, an alkyl group, an amino group or an alkylamino group, and R5, R6, R7, R8, R9, R10, R11, R12, R13, R14, R15, R16, R17 and R18 are groups which may be the same or different, provided that at least one of them represents a cyano group, a nitro group or a halogen atom. embedded imagewherein R24 R25 R26 R27 R28 R29 R30 R31 R32 R33 R34 R35, R36 and R37 are groups which may be the same or different (and represent a hydrogen atom) provided that at least one of them represents a cyano group, a nitro group or a halogen atom I.
