Abstract

A blood pump intended to be carried by a freely moving patient uses perpendicular magnetic and electrical fields to propel blood. A rod mounted coaxially inside a tube has electrodes in blood contact for establishing a radial electric field, and an inductor having windings parallel to the axis of the tube is used to establish a circumferential magnetic field. To avoid the evolution of gas at the electrode surfaces the magnetic and electric fields are periodically reversed, and the electrodes are made to have very high surface areas. The blood pump is powered by batteries or fuel cells (or a combination of both) to provide long service between recharging and to reduce the weight carried by the patient.

Claims

1. A blood pump comprising:

a conduit having an inner electrically conductive surface and an outer surface, said conductive inner surface forming a first electrode;

a rod having a central axis and an electrically conductive outer surface forming a second electrode, said rod located within the extents of said conduit;

a blood flow channel formed by said rod outer surface and said conduit inner surface;

an elongate toroid having an inner surface and an outer surface, said conduit outer surface located substantially within the extents of said toroid inner surface;

a current-carrying conductor applied around said toroid, said conductor producing a circumferential magnetic field around said rod central axis;

a voltage source connected between said first electrode and said second electrode;

a current source furnishing current through said current carrying conductor.

2. The heart pump of claim 1 wherein said voltage source produces a fixed voltage and said current source produces a fixed current.

3. The heart pump of claim 1 wherein said voltage source and said current source temporally reverse polarity at substantially the same time.

4. The heart pump of claim 1 wherein said voltage source and said current source periodically reverse polarity at substantially the same time.

5. The heart pump of claim 3 wherein said reversal of polarity occurs at a rate faster than a heart rate.

6. The heart pump of claim 4 wherein at least one of said voltage source and said current source produce square waves.

7. The heart pump of claim 4 wherein at least one of said voltage source and said current source produce sinusoidal waves.

8. The heart pump of claim 7 wherein said current source produces said sinusoidal waves by driving a pump load comprising a capacitor either in series or in parallel with said current carrying conductor, said conductor and said capacitor forming a resonant circuit having a resonant frequency, and said sinusoidal waves are applied at said resonant frequency.

9. The heart pump of claim 8 wherein said current carrying inductor includes a sense measurement for determining the direction of said current, said voltage source using said sense measurement to determine when to periodically reverse said voltage polarity.

10. The heart pump of claim 1 wherein at least one of said electrodes has an enhanced surface area.

11. The heart pump of claim 10 wherein the ratio of said first enhanced electrode surface area to said second enhanced electrode surface area is within the range of 0.5 to 2.

12. The heart pump of claim 10 wherein said enhanced surface area comprises a texturing of said rod outer surface.

13. The heart pump of claim 10 wherein said enhanced surface area comprises the application of iridium oxide to said rod outer surface.

14. The heart pump of claim 10 wherein said enhanced surface area comprises the application of titanium nitride to said rod outer surface.

15. The heart pump of claim 10 wherein said enhanced surface area comprises the application of platinum black to said rod outer surface.

16. The heart pump of claim 10 wherein said enhanced surface area comprises pitting the surface of said rod outer surface.

17. The heart pump of claim 1 wherein said first electrode and said second electrode have a protective surface.

18. The heart pump of claim 17 wherein said protective surface comprises an ion exchange surface.

19. The heart pump of claim 18 wherein said ion exchange surface comprises Nafion.

20. The heart pump of claim 1 wherein said current source and said voltage source are powered by a fuel cell.

21. The heart pump of claim 20 wherein said fuel cell is a proton exchange membrane cell.

22. The heart pump of claim 21 wherein said fuel cell is extracutaneously.

23. The heart pump of claim 21 wherein said fuel cell and said pump are subcutaneously located and said fuel cell is coupled to an external power source through electrical energy transfer means.

24. The heart pump of claim 23 wherein said energy transfer means includes an inductor located inside said patient and an inductor located outside said patient.

49. The heart pump of claim 1 wherein the output of said pump is controlled by at least one of said voltage source or said current source.

25. A blood pump comprising:

a channel for the passage of blood, said channel having a principal axis;

a magnetic field generator producing a time varying magnetic field principally orthogonal to said axis, said magnetic field having a strength;

an electric field generator producing a time varying electric field principally orthogonal to said axis and also orthogonal to said magnetic field, said electric field having a strength;

said magnetic field strength and said electric field strength both changing polarity at substantially the same time.

26. The heart pump of claim 25 wherein said electric field strength is fixed and said magnetic field strength is fixed.

27. The heart pump of claim 25 wherein said electric field and said magnetic field temporally reverse polarity at substantially the same time.

28. The heart pump of claim 25 wherein said electric field and said magnetic field periodically reverse polarity at substantially the same time.

29. The heart pump of claim 27 wherein said reversal of polarity occurs at a rate faster than a heart rate.

30. The heart pump of claim 28 wherein at least one of said electric field strength and magnetic field strength vary in a bipolar manner.

31. The heart pump of claim 28 wherein at least one of said electric field strength and said magnetic field strength vary in a sinusoidal manner.

32. The heart pump of claim 31 wherein said magnetic field strength is produced by an inductor having a current which varies in a sinusoidal manner through the oscillation of said current flowing in a resonant circuit comprising a capacitor either in series or in parallel with inductor, said inductor and said capacitor forming a resonant circuit having a resonant frequency, and said resonant circuit stimulated by the application of an excitation current at said resonant frequency.

33. The heart pump of claim 32 wherein said current carrying inductor includes a sense measurement for determining the direction of current flowing through said inductor in said resonant circuit, said sense measurement used to determine when to periodically reverse said electric field.

34. The heart pump of claim 25 wherein said electric field is created through the use of the application of a voltage to a first electrode and a second electrode, and at least one of said electrodes has an enhanced surface area.

35. The heart pump of claim 34 wherein the ratio of said first enhanced electrode surface area to said second enhanced electrode surface area is within the range of 0.5 to 2.

36. The heart pump of claim 34 wherein said enhanced surface area comprises a texturing of the surface of said electrode.

37. The heart pump of claim 34 wherein said enhanced surface area comprises the application of iridium oxide to said electrode.

38. The heart pump of claim 34 wherein said enhanced surface area comprises the application of titanium nitride to said electrode.

39. The heart pump of claim 34 wherein said enhanced surface area comprises the application of platinum black to said electrode.

40. The heart pump of claim 34 wherein said enhanced surface area comprises pitting the surface of said electrode.

41. The heart pump of claim 25 wherein said first electrode and said second electrode have a protective surface.

42. The heart pump of claim 41 wherein said protective surface comprises an ion exchange surface.

43. The heart pump of claim 42 wherein said ion exchange surface comprises Nafion.

44. The heart pump of claim 25 wherein said electric field and said magnetic field are powered by a fuel cell.

45. The heart pump of claim 44 wherein said fuel cell is a proton exchange membrane cell.

46. The heart pump of claim 44 wherein said fuel cell is located external to a patient.

47. The heart pump of claim 44 wherein said fuel cell and said pump are extracutaneoulsly located and said fuell cell is coupled to an external power source through electrical energy transfer means.

48. The heart pump of claim 47 wherein said energy transfer means includes an inductor located inside said patient and an inductor located outside said patient.

50. The heart pump of claim 25 wherein the output of said pump is controlled by at least one of said electric field strength or magnetic field strength.
