Abstract

Single-compartment, self-erasing, solution-phase electrochromic devices, solutions of electrochromic compounds for use as media of variable transmittance in such devices, and electrochromic compounds for such solutions are provided. The devices of the invention are surprisingly stable to cycling between light and dark states, have continuously variable transmittance to light as a function of electrical potential applied across the solution in a device, and have transmittance that can be varied over more than a factor of 10, from clear to dark or from dark to clear, in several seconds. Thus, the devices are especially suitable as variable transmittance components of variable transmission light filters, including windows, and variable reflectance mirrors, including anti-glare rearview mirrors in automobiles. Also provided are improved variable reflectance mirrors, wherein transmittance of reflected light is varied by thermochromic, photochromic or electro-optic means and wherein the reduction in transmittance which is required to eliminate perceptible reflection of an object to the eyes of an observer is reduced by disposing the plane of the highly reflective surface of the mirror at an angle with respect to the plane of the surface through which light from the object enters the mirror.

Claims

1. An electrochromic device, comprising:

(a) at least one substantially transparent substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;

(b) an electrochromic medium which comprises;

(1) a solvent;

(2) a cathodic electroactive material; and

(3) an anodic electroactive material, wherein at least one of the anodic and cathodic electroactive materials is electrochromic, and further wherein at least one of the anodic and cathodic materials is at least partially dissolved in the solvent; and

(c) wherein the electrochromic device is capable of being cycled between a substantially clear, light state and a dark state at least 10,000 times while at ambient temperature.

2. The electrochromic device according to claim 1, wherein the electrochromic device is capable of being cycled between a substantially clear, light state and a dark state at least 40,000 times while at ambient temperature.

3. The electrochromic device according to claim 2, wherein the electrochromic device is capable of being cycled between a substantially clear, light state and a dark state at least an additional 20,000 times while at approximately 55 degrees centigrade.

4. The electrochromic device according to claim 1, wherein the electrochromic device is capable of being cycled at least 40,000 times while at ambient temperature between a zero applied potential and an applied potential of approximately 1.5 volts.

5. The electrochromic device according to claim 4, wherein the electrochromic device is capable of being cycled at least an additional 20,000 times while at approximately 55 degrees centigrade between a zero applied potential and an applied potential of approximately 1.5 volts.

6. The electrochromic device according to claim 1, wherein the cathodic electroactive material comprises a viologen.

7. The electrochromic device according to claim 1, wherein the cathodic electroactive material comprises a viologen selected from at least one of the group comprising 1,1′

-dibenzyl-4,4′

-bipyridinium difluoroborate, 1,1′

-diphenyl-4,4′

-bipyridinium difluoroborate, 1,1′

-di(n-heptyl)-4,4′

-bipyridinium difluoroborate, 1,1′

-di(n-heptyl)-4,4′

-bipyridinium diperchlorate, and mixtures thereof.

8. The electrochromic device according to claim 1, wherein the anodic electroactive material comprises an azine group containing compound.

9. The electrochromic device according to claim 1, wherein the anodic electroactive material comprises an azine containing compound selected from at least one of the group comprising 5,10-dihydro-5,10-dimethylphenazine, 10-methylphenothiazine, 10-ethylphenoxazine, and mixtures thereof.

10. An electrochromic device, consisting of:

(a) a first substantially transparent substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;

(b) a second substantially transparent substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith,

(c) an electrochromic medium contained within a chamber positioned between the first and second substrates which comprises;

(1) a solvent;

(2) a cathodic electroactive material; and

(3) an anodic electroactive material, wherein at least one of the anodic and cathodic electroactive materials is electrochromic, and further wherein at least one of the anodic and cathodic materials is at least partially dissolved in the solvent; and

(d) wherein the electrochromic device is capable of being cycled between a substantially clear, light state and a dark state at least 10,000 times while at ambient temperature.

11. The electrochromic device according to claim 10, wherein the electrochromic device is capable of being cycled between a substantially clear, light state and a dark state at least 40,000 times while at ambient temperature.

12. The electrochromic device according to claim 11, wherein the electrochromic device is capable of being cycled between a substantially clear, light state and a dark state at least an additional 20,000 times while at approximately 55 degrees centigrade.

13. The electrochromic device according to claim 10, wherein the electrochromic device is capable of being cycled at least 40,000 times while at ambient temperature between a zero applied potential and an applied potential of approximately 1.5 volts.

14. The electrochromic device according to claim 13, wherein the electrochromic device is capable of being cycled at least an additional 20,000 times while at approximately 55 degrees centigrade between a zero applied potential and an applied potential of approximately 1.5 volts.

15. The electrochromic device according to claim 10, wherein the cathodic electroactive material comprises a viologen.

16. The electrochromic device according to claim 10, wherein the cathodic electroactive material comprises a viologen selected from at least one of the group comprising 1,1′

-dibenzyl-4,4′

-bipyridinium difluoroborate, 1,1′

-diphenyl-4,4′

-bipyridinium difluoroborate, 1,1′

-di(n-heptyl)-4,4′

-bipyridinium difluoroborate, 1,1′

-di(n-heptyl)-4,4′

-bipyridinium diperchlorate, and mixtures thereof.

17. The electrochromic device according to claim 10, wherein the anodic electroactive material comprises an azine group containing compound.

18. The electrochromic device according to claim 10, wherein the anodic electroactive material comprises an azine group containing compound selected from at least one of the group comprising 5,10-dihydro-5,10-dimethylphenazine, 10-methylphenothiazine, 10-ethylphenoxazine, and mixtures thereof.

19. An electrochromic device, comprising:

(a) at least one substantially transparent substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;

(b) an electrochromic medium which comprises;

(1) a solvent;

(2) a cathodic electroactive material; and

(3) an anodic electroactive material, wherein at least one of the anodic and cathodic electroactive materials is electrochromic, and further wherein at least one of the anodic and cathodic materials is at least partially dissolved in the solvent; and

(c) means associated with the electrochromic device for operatively cycling the same between a substantially clear, light state and a dark state at least 40,000 times while at ambient temperature.

20. An electrochromic device, consisting of:

(a) a first substantially transparent substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;

(b) a second substantially transparent substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith,

(c) an electrochromic medium contained within a chamber positioned between the first and second substrates which comprises;

(1) a solvent;

(2) a cathodic electroactive material; and

(3) an anodic electroactive material, wherein at least one of the anodic and cathodic electroactive materials is electrochromic, and further wherein at least one of the anodic and cathodic materials is at least partially dissolved in the solvent; and

(d) means associated with the electrochromic device for operatively cycling the same between a substantially clear, light state and a dark state at least 40,000 times while at ambient temperature.

21. An electrochromic device, comprising:

(a) a first substantially transparent substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;

(b) a second substantially transparent substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith,

(c) an electrochromic medium contained within a chamber positioned between the first and second substrates which comprises;

(1) a solvent;

(2) a cathodic electroactive material; and

(3) an anodic electroactive material, wherein at least one of the anodic and cathodic electroactive materials is electrochromic, and further wherein at least one of the anodic and cathodic materials is at least partially dissolved in the solvent; and

(d) wherein the electrochromic device is capable of being cycled between a substantially clear, light state and a dark state at least 40,000 times while at ambient temperature, and wherein the device is capable of exhibiting a transmittance of approximately 85% at a zero applied potential and a transmittance of approximately 5% at an applied potential of approximately 1.1 volts after 40,000 cycles at ambient temperature.

The electrochromic device according to claim 21, wherein the electrochromic device is capable of being cycled between a substantially clear, light state and a dark state at least an additional 20,000 times while at approximately 55 degrees centigrade, and wherein the device is capable of exhibiting a transmittance of approximately 80% at a zero applied potential and a transmittance of approximately 5% at an applied potential of approximately 1.1 volts after the additional at least 20,000 cycles at approximately 55 degrees centigrade.
