Abstract

The present disclosure relates to systems and methods that use a hydrophobic medium to remove salt and moisture from the intake air of a gas turbine system. The disclosure also relates to systems and methods that use a two stage filtering process to remove particulate material, salt and moisture from the intake air of a gas turbine system. Particulate material is filtered from the intake air at a first stage air cleaner. Subsequently, salt and moisture are removed from the intake air at a second stage salt barrier located downstream from the first stage air cleaner. In certain embodiments, the second stage salt barrier uses a hydrophobic medium to remove salt and moisture from the intake air.

Claims

1. A method for cleaning intake air of a gas turbine, the method comprising the steps of:

removing particulate material from the intake air at a first stage air cleaner, the first stage air cleaner having a filtration efficiency of at least 65% at a particulate size of 0.76 microns and a single face velocity of 20 feet per minute;

directing the intake air downstream from the first stage air cleaner through an air flow gap to a second stage salt barrier;

filtering salt from the intake air at the second stage salt barrier; and

directing the intake air downstream from the second stage salt barrier to the gas turbine.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the second stage salt barrier includes a hydrophobic media.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the hydrophobic media includes a microporous layer.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the microporous layer comprises microporous polytetrafluoroethylene.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein the microporous layer comprises a microporous membrane.

6. A filter system for filtering intake air, the filter system comprising:

a) a first stage air cleaner for reducing a concentration of particulate material in the intake air;

b) a second stage filter arrangement located downstream from the first stage air cleaner and separated from the first stage air cleaner by an air flow gap, the second stage filter arrangement including a hydrophobic media for reducing the concentration of moisture in the intake air; and

c) the hydrophobic media including a hydrophobic layer supported on an open fibrous support scrim.

7. The filter system of claim 6, wherein the first stage air cleaner includes:

a chamber through which the intake air is adapted to flow;

a partition dividing the chamber into upstream and downstream volumes, the partition defining apertures for allowing the intake air to flow from the upstream volume to the downstream volume;

a plurality of air filters corresponding with the apertures of the partition, the air filters being arranged and configured to filter particulate material from the intake air that flows from the upstream volume to the downstream volume; and

the air filters having a filtering efficiency of at least 65% at a particulate size of 0.76 microns and a single face velocity of 20 feet per minute.

8. The filter system of claim 6, wherein the hydrophobic layer includes a microporous material.

9. The filter system of claim 6, wherein the hydrophobic layer includes a microporous membrane.

10. The filter system of claim 6, wherein the second stage filter arrangement includes:

a plurality of vertically spaced-apart hydrophobic filter elements incorporating the hydrophobic media; and

a plurality of inclined baffles arranged and configured to direct the intake air upward through the hydrophobic filter elements, each of the baffles being positioned beneath a corresponding one of the hydrophobic filter elements.

11. The filter system of claim 10, wherein the hydrophobic filter elements are aligned along substantially horizontal planes and are substantially parallel.

12. The filter system of claim 10, wherein the baffles are inclined relative to horizontal at an angle in the range of 5 to 30 degrees.

13. The filter system of claim 10, wherein the hydrophobic filter elements are pleated.

14. The filter system of claim 10, wherein the hydrophobic filter elements comprise pleated panel filters.

15. The filter system of claim 10, wherein the hydrophobic filter elements include microporous polytetrafluoroethylene membranes.

16. The filter system of claim 6, wherein the overall thickness of the hydrophobic media is from 0.01 inch to 0.05 inch.

17. The filter system of claim 6, wherein the first stage air cleaner has a filtering efficiency of 65% at a particulate size of 0.76 microns and a single face velocity of 20 feet per minute.

18. A gas turbine system comprising:

a gas turbine adapted to draw intake air; and

a hydrophobic media for reducing the concentration of moisture in the intake air before the intake air enters the gas turbine, wherein the hydrophobic media includes a microporous hydrophobic membrane.

19. The gas turbine system of claim 18, wherein the hydrophobic membrane includes polytetrafluoroethylene.

20. The gas turbine system of claim 18, wherein the hydrophobic membrane has a pore size of about 3 microns.

21. The gas turbine system of claim 18, further comprising a first stage air cleaner positioned upstream from the gas turbine for reducing a concentration of particulate material in the intake air, and a second stage salt barrier arrangement located downstream from the first stage air cleaner and upstream from the gas turbine, the salt barrier arrangement including the hydrophobic membrane.

22. The gas turbine system of claim 18, wherein the hydrophobic membrane has a thickness of about 0.4 mil.

23. The gas turbine system of claim 18, wherein the hydrophobic membrane has an air permeability in the range of 7-10 cubic feet per minute.

24. A filter system for an air stream comprising:

a) a first stage air cleaner for reducing a concentration of particulate material in the air stream;

b) a second stage filter arrangement located downstream from the first stage air cleaner and separated from the first stage air cleaner by an air flow gap, the second stage filter arrangement including a hydrophobic media arranged and configured to reduce the concentration of moisture in the air stream, a plurality of vertically spaced-apart hydrophobic filter elements incorporating the hydrophobic media, and a plurality of inclined baffles arranged and configured to direct the intake air upward through the hydrophobic filter elements, each of the baffles being positioned beneath a corresponding one of the hydrophobic filter elements; and

c) the hydrophobic media including a hydrophobic layer supported on a support scrim.

25. The filter system of claim 24, wherein the hydrophobic filter elements are aligned along substantially horizontal planes and are substantially parallel.

26. The filter system of claim 24, wherein the baffles are inclined relative to horizontal at an angle in the range of 5 to 30 degrees.

27. The filter system of claim 24, wherein the hydrophobic filter elements are pleated.

28. The filter system of claim 24, wherein the hydrophobic filter elements comprise pleated panel filters.

29. The filter system of claim 24, wherein the hydrophobic layer includes a microporous membrane.

30. The filter system of claim 24, wherein the hydrophobic layer includes a microporous material.

31. The filter system of claim 24, wherein the scrim and hydrophobic layer together have a thickness from 0.01 to 0.05 inch.

32. A filter system for filtering intake air, the filter system comprising:

a) a first stage air cleaner for reducing a concentration of particulate material in the intake air; and

b) a second stage filter arrangement located downstream from the first stage air cleaner and separated from the first stage air cleaner by an air flow gap, the second stage filter arrangement including a hydrophobic layer for reducing a concentration of moisture in the intake air, the hydrophobic layer being microporous.

33. The filter system of claim 32, wherein the hydrophobic layer comprises a membrane.

34. The filter system of claim 32, wherein the hydrophobic layer is supported on a fibrous scrim.

35. The filter system of claim 34, wherein the hydrophobic layer and the scrim together have a thickness in the range of 0.01 to 0.05 inch.

36. The filter system of claim 32, wherein the first stage air cleaner has a filtration efficiency of at least 65% at a particulate size of 0.76 microns and a single face velocity of 20 feet per minute.

37. The filter system of claim 32, wherein the hydrophobic layer has a pore size of about 3 microns.

38. A filter system for filtering intake air, the filter system comprising:

a) a first stage air cleaner for reducing a concentration of particulate material in the intake air; and

b) a second stage filter arrangement located downstream from the first stage air cleaner and separated from the first stage air cleaner by an air flow gap, the second stage filter arrangement including a hydrophobic layer for reducing a concentration of moisture in the intake air, the hydrophobic layer being a membrane having random fibrillations with thicknesses no greater than 1 micron.
