Abstract

There is disclosed an apparatus and method for reducing power consumption in physiological condition monitors that use a memory data storage device that operates in a high power mode when data is being written to the memory data storage device and operates in a low power mode when inactive. The apparatus comprises: 1) a controller for receiving incoming data to be written to the memory data storage device; and 2) a first low power buffer coupled to the controller. The controller stores the incoming data in the first low power buffer until a predetermined amount of incoming data has been accumulated in the first low power buffer and transfers the accumulated predetermined amount of incoming data to the memory data storage device in a single data transfer.

Claims

1. An apparatus for monitoring a physiological condition of a person in which data about said physiological condition is stored in a memory data storage device capable of operating in (i) a high power mode when said data is being written to said memory data storage device and (ii) a low power mode when inactive, said apparatus comprising:

a controller that is capable of (i) receiving said data from a data acquisition device and (ii) writing said data to said memory data storage device; and

a first low power buffer that is capable of storing said data from said data acquisition device in said first low power buffer until a predetermined amount of incoming data has been accumulated therein and wherein said controller transfers said accumulated predetermined amount of incoming data to said memory data storage device in a single data transfer.

2. The apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein said data acquisition device is capable of being coupled to a detector capable of being coupled to said person.

3. The apparatus as set forth in claim 2 wherein said detector is capable of obtaining data about at least one physiological condition of said person.

4. The apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein said data acquisition device is capable of receiving incoming data to be written to said memory data storage device.

5. The apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein said predetermined amount of incoming data is determined by a size of said predetermined amount of incoming data.

6. The apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein said predetermined amount of incoming data is determined by a selected time duration during which said incoming data has been accumulated.

7. The apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein said controller transfers said accumulated predetermined amount of incoming data to said memory data storage device when said memory data storage device is in said high power mode.

8. The apparatus as set forth in claim 1 further comprising a second low power buffer that is capable of storing said incoming data when said accumulated predetermined amount of incoming data is being transferred from said first low power buffer to said memory data storage device.

9. The apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein said memory data storage device is of a battery powered type having a relatively high power consumption when data is written to said memory data storage device.

10. The apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein said memory data storage device is a flash memory card.

11. The apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein said data acquisition device includes an analog to digital converter capable of converting data from an analog form of data to a digital form of data.

12. The apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein said data acquisition device is coupled to a respiration detector.

13. The apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein said data acquisition device is coupled to an electrocardiograph detector.

14. The apparatus as set forth in claim 1 comprising a processor unit coupled to and capable of receiving data from at least one physiological condition detector.

15. The apparatus as set forth in claim 14 comprising a transmitter capable of transmitting from said processor unit to a base station said data from said at least one physiological condition detector.

16. The apparatus as set forth in claim 15 wherein said processor unit is coupled to said data acquisition device and wherein said processor is capable of selectively enabling the operation of said data acquisition device.

17. The apparatus as set forth in claim 1 comprising a processor unit that is capable of receiving data from said memory data storage device.

18. The apparatus as set forth in claim 17 comprising a transmitter coupled to said processor unit capable of transmitting data from said processor unit to a base station.

19. A method of operating an apparatus for monitoring a physiological condition of a person in which data about said physiological condition is stored in a memory data storage device capable of operating in (i) a high power mode when said data is being written to said memory data storage device and (ii) a low power mode when inactive, said method of operation comprising the steps of:

receiving said data from a data acquisition device;

storing in a first low power buffer said data from said data acquisition device until a predetermined amount of incoming data has been accumulated; and

transferring, in response thereto, said accumulated predetermined amount of incoming data to said memory data storage device in a single data transfer.
