Abstract

One embodiment of my invention comprises a tool string for testing a wellbore formation that includes a production inlet, an injection outlet, and a sampler apparatus. Fluid is taken from a production zone, into the tool string through the production inlet, out of the tool string through the injection outlet, and into the injection zone. Within the interior of the tool string, the sampler apparatus takes samples of the fluid flowing therethrough. In another embodiment, a large volume of sample fluid is trapped within the interior of the tool string, such as between two valves, and is removed from the wellbore along with the tool string subsequent to the test. In another embodiment, the tool string includes at least one perforating gun to perforate one of the production and injection zones. The tool string may also include two perforating guns to perforate both the production and injection zones. One of the two perforating guns may be an oriented perforating gun so that upon activation the shape charges do not disturb any of the cables, data lines, or transmission lines associated with the tool string.

Claims

1. A method of testing a well having a production zone and an injection zone, comprising:

deploying a tool string into the well, the tool string including an upper sealing element and a plurality of valves, the valves located below the upper sealing element;

producing fluid from the production zone into the tool string;

injecting the fluid into the injection zone;

operating the valves from above the upper sealing element by use of pressure; and

controlling fluid flow from the production zone to the injection zone using at least one of the valves.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the pressure is in the form of applied pressure.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the pressure is in the form of pressure pulses.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the valve is operated by use of pressure in the annulus above the upper sealing element.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising communicating the pressure in the annulus above the upper sealing element to the valve by passing a hydraulic line through the upper sealing element to the valve.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising circulating fluid flow between the inside of the tool string and an annular region outside the tool string by opening another one of the valves.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising collecting a sample of the fluid by closing at least two of the valves.

8. A tool string for testing a well having a production zone and an injection zone, comprising:

a production inlet that provides communication between the production zone and the interior of the tool string;

an injection outlet that provides communication between the injection zone and the interior of the tool string;

an upper sealing element located above the uppermost of the production zone and the injection zone;

a plurality of valves located below the upper sealing element, the valves adapted to be operated by pressure; and

a passageway providing communication above the upper sealing element to operate the valves.

9. The tool string of claim 8, wherein the passageway comprises a hydraulic line.

10. The tool string of claim 9, wherein the hydraulic line passes through the upper sealing element and provides communication between the annulus above the upper sealing element and the valves.

11. The tool string of claim 10, wherein:

the upper sealing element comprises a multi-port packer including a main bore and at least one secondary port; and

the hydraulic line passes through the secondary port of the packer.

12. The tool string of claim 10, wherein the valves are adapted to be operated by applied pressure.

13. The tool string of claim 10, wherein the valves are adapted to be operated by pressure pulses.

14. The tool string of claim 8, wherein at least one of the valve is adapted to control fluid flow from the production zone to the injection zone.

15. The tool string of claim 14, wherein at least another one of the valves comprises a circulating valve to control communication of fluid between an interior of the tool string and an exterior of the tool string.

16. The tool string of claim 8, wherein at least two of the valves are adapted to create a chamber to collect sample fluid in response to the at least two valves closing.

17. The tool string of claim 8, wherein the valves are adapted to be operated by applied pressure.

18. The tool string of claim 8, wherein the valves are adapted to be operated by pressure pulses.

19. A method of testing a well having a production zone and an injection zone, comprising:

deploying a tool string into the well, the tool string including an upper sealing element and at least one valve, the valve located below the upper sealing element;

producing the fluid from the production zone into the tool string;

injecting the fluid into the injection zone; and

operating the valve by use of an acoustic signal to control fluid flow from the production zone to the injection zone.

20. The method of claim 19, further comprising flowing fluid from the production zone to the injection zone.

21. A tool string for testing a well having a production zone and an injection zone, comprising:

a production inlet that provides communication between the production zone and the interior of the tool string;

an injection outlet that provides communication between the injection zone and the interior of the tool string;

an upper sealing element located above the uppermost of the production zone and the injection zone;

at least one valve located below the upper sealing element; and

the valve operatively connected to an acoustic interface module.

22. The tool string of claim 21, further comprising:

an acoustic telemetry system adapted to send acoustic signals to the acoustic interface module in order to operate the valve.

23. A tool string for testing a well having a production zone and an injection zone, comprising:

a production inlet that provides communication between the production zone and the interior of the tool string;

an injection outlet that provides communication between the injection zone and the interior of the tool string;

an upper sealing element located above the uppermost of the production zone and the injection zone;

at least one valve located below the upper sealing element;

a control line that passes through the upper sealing element and that is in communication with the valve;

a communication component in communication with the control line; and

a transmission line in communication with the communication component and extending to the surface.

24. The tool string of claim 23, wherein:

the upper sealing element comprises a multi port packer including a main bore and at least one secondary port; and

the control line passes through the secondary port of the packer.

25. A tool string for testing a well having a production zone and an injection zone, comprising:

a production inlet that provides communication between the production zone and the interior of the tool string;

an injection outlet that provides communication between the injection zone and the interior of the tool string;

an upper sealing element located above the uppermost of the production zone and the injection zone;

a lower sealing element located between the production zone and the injection zone;

the lower sealing element comprising a packer stinger assembly; and

a flow valve actuatable between an open position and a closed position to selectively control fluid flow from the production zone to the injection zone.

26. A tool string for testing a well having a production zone and an injection zone, comprising:

a production inlet that provides communication between the production zone and the interior of the tool string;

an injection outlet that provides communication between the injection zone and the interior of the tool string;

an upper sealing element located above the uppermost of the production zone and the injection zone;

at least one sensor located below the upper sealing element;

a data line that passes through the upper sealing element and that is in communication with the sensor;

a flow valve actuatable by the data line; and

a lower sealing element, wherein at least one of the production outlet and injection inlet extends below the lower sealing element.

27. The tool string of claim 26, wherein the flow valve is actuatable between an open position and a closed position to control fluid flow from the production zone to the injection zone.

28. The tool string of claim 26, wherein the upper and lower sealing elements are adapted to isolate the injection and production zones.

29. A method of testing a well having a production zone and an injection zone, comprising:

deploying a tool string into the well, the tool string including an upper sealing element, at least one sensor, and a data line, the sensor located below the upper sealing element and the data line extending through the upper sealing element and being in operative communication with the sensor;

producing fluid from the production zone into the tool string;

injecting the fluid into the injection zone;

providing a lower sealing element, wherein one of producing the fluid and injecting the fluid is performed through a flow conduit extending below the lower sealing element;

operating the sensor by use of the data line; and

operating a flow valve controlling fluid from the production zone to the injection zone using the data line.

30. The method of claim 29, further comprising isolating the production and injection zones using the upper and lower sealing elements.

31. A method of testing a well having a production zone and an injection zone, comprising:

deploying a tool string into the well, the tool string including an upper sealing element and at least one valve, the valve located below the upper sealing element;

producing the fluid from the production zone into the tool string;

injecting the fluid into the injection zone; and

operating the valve by use of an electromagnetic signal.

32. A tool string for testing a well having a production zone and an injection zone, comprising:

a production inlet that provides communication between the production zone and the interior of the tool string;

an injection outlet that provides communication between the injection zone and the interior of the tool string;

an upper sealing element located above the utppermost of the production zone and the injection zone;

at least one valve located below the upper sealing element; and

the valve operatively connected to an electromagnetic interface module.
