1. A method of storing information on a substrate and recovering the same when desired comprising:
- (a) encoding the information as a polymer sequence;
(b) storing said information by synthesizing the polymer sequence and attaching it to the substrate;
(c) recovering the information by replication of the polymer sequence; and
decoding the recovered information by determining the polymer sequence, said information being stored on the substrate at a density of at least 103 different polymers per cm2 of the substrate.

Abstract
The present invention provides methods and apparatus for sequencing, fingerprinting and mapping biological macromolecules, typically biological polymers. The methods make use of a plurality of sequence specific recognition reagents which can also be used for classification of biological samples, and to characterize their sources.
