Abstract

A method of compiling transmitter-to-receiver relationships in a radio system is disclosed. The radio system includes at least two receivers (B48, B42) and at least one transmitter (MS1) located in at least one radio coverage area (C42) of the receivers (B42). The method for a single transmitter (MS1) includes the steps of: first, sending a signal (ARM) having known power (Put) on a transmission channel allocated to the transmitter (MS1). Next, in at least one of the receivers (B48, B42), the power received (S48, S42) from the transmitted signal (2, ACCESS) is measured. The transmitted signal is guaranteed to be a solitary signal upon reception. The amplification (g{circumflex over ( )}48, g{circumflex over ( )}42) of the signal (ARM) received in the receiver is then calculated. Finally, the calculated amplification (g{circumflex over ( )}48, g{circumflex over ( )}42) is stored in a storage location in the radio system.

Claims

1. A method of compiling the relationships of mobile transmitters to fixed receivers in a radio system that includes at least two fixed receivers and at least one mobile transmitter located in at least one radio coverage area of the fixed receivers, wherein the at least one mobile transmitter and each of the at least two fixed receivers communicate over an air interface, the method comprises the steps of:

sending on a transmission channel allocated to said mobile transmitter a signal of known power;

measuring in at least one of the at least two fixed receivers the power received from the transmitted signal, it being essentially guaranteed that the signal will be a solitary signal upon reception;

calculating an amplification factor associated with the signal received in the at least one fixed receiver; and

storing the calculated amplification factor in a storage location in the radio system, the amplification factor being stored in a histogram, in which the X-axis represents amplification factor and the Y-axis represents the number of collected values having a certain amplification value.

2. A method according to claim 1, further comprising the step of:

calculating the amplification factor as the quotient between received power and transmitted power.

3. A method according to claim 1, further comprising the step of:

establishing the identity of the fixed receiver to which the mobile transmitter primarily directed its transmission of the signal.

4. A method according to claim 1, further comprising the step of:

repeating the method in respect to other mobile transmitters in the radio system.

A method according to claim 1, wherein the histogram is stored in a matrix memory, wherewith the histogram is tied in the matrix memory to the at least two fixed receivers that received signals from which the values in the histogram have been generated, and also tied to a radio coverage area in which different mobile transmitters were located at the time of transmitting said signals.

6. A method according to claim 1, wherein the histogram is normalised in conjunction with storing new amplification values.

7. A method of compiling relationships of transmitters to receivers in a radio system, wherein one or more mobile transmitters and one or more fixed receivers communicate over an air interface, the method comprising the steps of:

sending a signal of known power from one of the one or more mobile transmitters to one of the one or more fixed receivers on a transmission channel allocated to the one of the one or more mobile transmitters;

establishing the identity of the one of the one or more mobile transmitters associated with the signal and the allocated transmission channel;

measuring in at least one of the fixed receivers the power received from the one of the one or more mobile transmitters associated with the transmitted signal;

calculating an amplification factor associated with the transmitted signal received in the fixed receiver as a quotient of a received power and a transmitted power;

storing the amplification factor in a histogram; and

repeating the method for others of the one or more mobile transmitters in the radio communication system, wherein the histogram includes an X-axis and a Y-axis and wherein the X-axis represents one or more values associated with the stored amplification factors and the Y-axis represents how many of the stored amplification factors are associated with each of the one or more values.

The method of claim 7, wherein the histogram is stored in a matrix memory, and wherein the histogram is associated with one of the one or more fixed receivers in association with which the one or more values in the histogram are generated, and wherein the histogram is further associated with a radio coverage area associated with the one of the one or more fixed receivers.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein the histogram is normalised in conjunction with storing the amplification factor.

10. A method for compiling information in a radio system including one or more Mobile Switching Centers (MSC), one or more fixed receivers, and one or more mobile transmitters, the information for indicating how each of the one or more mobile transmitters influence each of the one or more fixed receivers, the method comprising:

a) instructing all of the one or more fixed receivers in the radio system to capture information on all control channels in the radio system, so as to capture one or more messages of a predetermined message type from corresponding ones of the one or more mobile transmitters in the radio system;

b) sending a message of the predetermined message type from one of the one or more mobile transmitters on a control channel, the access request message including an identity associated with the one of the one or more mobile transmitters;

c) capturing the message at different ones of the one or more fixed receivers capable of capturing the message;

d) storing at each of the different ones of the fixed receivers information associated with the captured message, the information including the identity associated with the mobile transmitter, a time at which the message was received by the each of the different ones of the fixed receivers, and a power at which the message was received in the each of the different ones of the fixed receivers;

e) repeating steps b)-d) for all of the one or more mobile transmitters associated with the radio system; and

f) repeating steps b)-e) after a predetermined period of time.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising the steps of:

g) sending the stored information from the different ones of the fixed recievers to the one or more MSCs;

h) calculating an amplification factor for each of the captured messages relative to each of the different ones of the fixed receivers; and

i) storing the calculated amplification factors in the one or more MSCs as a matrix.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein the predetermined message type is a message type of very short duration such that the likelihood of more than one of the message being sent simultaneously on the control channel in a same area is substantially reduced.

13. The method of claim 10 wherein the predetermined message type is an access request message (ARM).

14. An arrangement for compiling information in a radio system, the arrangment comprising:

one or more Mobile Switching Centers (MSC);

one or more fixed receivers coupled to the one or more MSCs over an air interface; and

one or more mobile transmitters coupled to the one or more fixed receivers over the air interface, wherein the information indicates how each of the one or more mobile transmitters influence each of the one or more fixed receivers, the arrangement configured to;

a) instruct all of the one or more fixed receivers in the radio system to capture information on all control channels in the radio system, so as to capture one or more messages of a predetermined message type from corresponding ones of the one or more mobile transmitters in the radio system;

b) send a message of the predetermined message type from one of the one or more mobile transmitters on a control channel, the access request message including an identity associated with the one of the one or more mobile transmitters;

c) capture the message at different ones of the one or more fixed receivers capable of capturing the message;

d) store at each of the different ones of the fixed receivers information associated with the captured message, the information including the identity associated with the mobile transmitter, a time at which the message was received by the each of the different ones of the fixed receivers, and a power at which the message was received in the each of the different ones of the fixed receivers;

e) repeat steps b)-d) for all of the one or more mobile transmitters associated with the radio system; and

f) repeat steps b)-e) after a predetermined period of time.

15. The arrangement of claim 14, further configured to:

g) send the stored information from the different ones of the fixed recievers to the one or more MSCs;

h) calculate an amplification factor for each of the captured messages relative to each of the different ones of the fixed receivers; and

i) store the calculated amplification factors in the one or more MSCs as a matrix.

16. The arrangement of claim 14, wherein the predetermined message type is a message type of very short duration such that the likelihood of more than one of the message being sent simultaneously on the control channel in a same area is substantially reduced.

17. The arrangement of claim 14 wherein the predetermined message type is an access request message (ARM).
