1. A porous tip electrode for a catheter, the electrode comprising:
- a body, having proximal and distal ends, comprising a porous material through which fluid can pass and having a cavity therein;
an insert having proximal and distal ends and comprising a non-porous material contained within the cavity, the insert having at least one passage, having proximal and distal ends, extending therethrough and at least one blind hole extending from its proximal end;
wherein the distal end of the insert is contained within the cavity of the body.

The insert, which is contained therein, has proximal and distal ends and comprises a non-porous material contained within the cavity. The insert having at least one passage extending therethrough and at least blind hole extending from its proximal end.

35. An irrigated tip catheter comprising:

a catheter body having an outer wall, proximal and distal ends, and a lumen extending therethrough;
a tip section comprising a segment of flexible tubing having proximal and distal ends and at least one lumen therethrough, the proximal end of the tip section being fixedly attached to the distal end of the catheter body;
a porous tip electrode fixedly attached to the distal end of the tubing of the tip section, the tip electrode having an outer surface and comprising;
a body, having proximal and distal ends, comprising a porous material through which fluid can pass and having a cavity therein;
an insert having proximal and distal ends and comprising a non-porous material contained within the cavity, the insert having at least one passage extending therethrough and at least one blind hole extending from its proximal end;
wherein the distal end of the insert is contained within the cavity of the body;
an infusion tube having proximal and distal ends, said infusion tube extending through the central lumen in the catheter body, wherein the distal end of the infusion tube is in fluid communication with the proximal end of the passage in the tip electrode, whereby fluid can flow through the infusion tube, into the passage in the tip electrode and through the porous material of tip electrode to the outer surface of the tip electrode; and
a temperature sensing means or an electrode lead wire mounted within the blind hole of the insert. - View Dependent Claims (36, 37, 38, 39, 40)
the first infusion tube segment has proximal and distal ends, the distal end being in fluid communication with a lumen in the tip section that is in fluid communication with the passage in the tip electrode, and the second infusion tube segment extends from the distal end of the lumen in the tip section in which the first infusion tube segment is mounted, whereby fluid can flow from the first infusion tube segment, into the lumen in the tip section, into the second infusion tube segment, into the passage, through the porous material of the tip electrode and to the outer surface of the tip electrode.

38. A catheter according to claim 35, wherein the insert comprises first and second blind holes.

39. A catheter according to claim 38, wherein a temperature sensing means is mounted in the first blind hole and an electrode lead wire is mounted in the second blind hole.

a catheter body having an outer wall, proximal and distal ends, and a lumen extending therethrough;
a tip section comprising a segment of flexible tubing having proximal and distal ends and at least one lumen therethrough, the proximal end of the tip section being fixedly attached to the distal end of the catheter body;
a porous tip electrode fixedly attached to the distal end of the tubing of the tip section, the tip electrode having an outer surface and comprising;
a body comprising a porous material through which fluid can pass and having at least two cavities therein;
first and second inserts, each contained within a different cavity, the first insert having a passage extending therethrough and the second insert comprising a cup having an open proximal end and a closed distal end;
an infusion tube having proximal and distal ends, said infusion tube extending through the central lumen in the catheter body, wherein the distal end of the infusion tube is in fluid communication with the proximal end of the passage in the tip electrode, whereby fluid can flow through the infusion tube, into the passage in the tip electrode and through the porous material of tip electrode to the outer surface of the tip electrode; and

a temperature sensing means or an electrode lead wire mounted within the blind hole of the insert.
