Abstract

Secondary circuit board which carries an acceleration sensor is mounted upon a primary circuit board in an anti-lock brake system control unit. The secondary circuit board is mounted at an angle to the primary circuit board and the acceleration sensor is mounted at an angle relative to the secondary circuit board to align a sensing element contained in the acceleration sensor perpendicular to a direction of vehicle travel.

Claims

1. A brake control assembly for a vehicle brake system, the vehicle having an axis, the brake control assembly comprising:

a hydraulic control valve body including electrically controlled components, said valve body adapted to be hydraulically connected to the vehicle wheel brakes;

an electronic control unit for controlling the valve body components, said electronic control unit mounted upon said hydraulic control valve body to define said brake control assembly;

means for mounting said brake control assembly upon the vehicle in a predetermined off axis orientation relative to the vehicle axis; and

at least one motion sensor mounted within said electronic control unit, said motion sensor being oriented within said electronic control unit to compensate for the off axis mounting of the brake control assembly upon the vehicle such that, when the brake control assembly is mounted upon the vehicle, said motion sensor will properly sense motion of the vehicle relative to the vehicle axis.

2. The brake control assembly according to claim 1 wherein the vehicle axis is a longitudinal axis and said motion sensor is adapted to sense acceleration along said longitudinal axis.

3. The brake control assembly according to claim 1 wherein the vehicle axis is a lateral axis that is perpendicular to a vehicle longitudinal axis and said motion sensor is adapted to sense acceleration along said lateral axis.

4. The brake control assembly according to claim 1 further including a primary circuit substrate disposed within said electronic control unit with said motion sensor mounted upon said primary circuit substrate.

5. The brake control assembly according to claim 4 wherein the control unit is included in a vehicle stability control system.

6. The brake control assembly according to claim 4 wherein the control unit is included in a traction control system.

7. The brake control assembly according to claim 4 wherein the control unit is included in an anti-lock brake control system.

8. The brake control assembly according to claim 7 wherein the control unit is included in an anti-lock brake control system.

9. The brake control assembly according to claim 7 wherein the control unit is included in a traction control system.

10. The brake control assembly according to claim 7 wherein the control unit is included in a vehicle stability control system.

11. The brake control assembly according to claim 1 further including a primary circuit substrate disposed within said electronic control unit and a secondary circuit substrate mounted upon said primary substrate, said secondary circuit substrate defining a plane that forms an angle with a plane defined by said primary circuit substrate, said motion sensor being mounted upon said secondary circuit substrate.

The brake control assembly according to claim 1 wherein said motion sensor is a first motion sensor and the vehicle axis is a first vehicle axis, said first motion sensor sensing a first motion of the vehicle relative to the first vehicle axis and further wherein the vehicle has a second axis and a second motion sensor is mounted within said electronic control unit, said second motion sensor being oriented within said electronic control unit to compensate for the off axis mounting of the brake control assembly such that, when the brake control assembly is mounted upon the vehicle, said second motion sensor will sense a second motion of the vehicle relative to the second vehicle axis.

13. The brake control assembly according to claim 12 wherein the first vehicle axis is perpendicular to the second vehicle axis.

The brake control assembly according to claim 12 wherein the vehicle has a third axis and further wherein a third motion sensor is mounted within said electronic control unit, said third motion sensor being oriented within said electronic control unit to compensate for any off axis mounting of the brake control assembly such that, when the brake control assembly is mounted upon the vehicle, said third motion sensor will sense a third motion of the vehicle relative to the third vehicle axis.

15. The brake control assembly according to claim 14 wherein the first vehicle axis is perpendicular to the second vehicle axis and further wherein the third vehicle axis is perpendicular to a plane defined by the first and second vehicle axes.

16. A method for fabrication of a brake control assembly for a vehicle brake system, the vehicle having an axis, the method comprising the steps of:

(a) providing a brake control assembly that includes a hydraulic control valve body including electrically controlled components, the valve body adapted to be hydraulically connected to the vehicle wheel brakes, an electronic control unit for controlling the valve body components, the electronic control unit mounted upon the hydraulic control valve body to define said brake control assembly, the electronic control unit adapted to carry at least one motion sensor;

(b) determining a mounting location for the brake control assembly upon the vehicle; and

(c) orienting a motion sensor within the electronic control unit such that the mounting orientation of the brake control assembly relative to the vehicle and the mounting location of the motion sensor relative to the brake control assembly cooperate to position the motion sensor to properly sense motion of the vehicle relative to the vehicle axis.

The method for fabrication according to claim 16 wherein the motion sensor is a first motion sensor and the vehicle axis is a first vehicle axis, the first motion sensor sensing a first motion of the vehicle relative to the first vehicle axis and further wherein the vehicle has a second axis perpendicular to the first vehicle axis and step (c) also includes mounting a second motion sensor within the electronic control unit, the second motion sensor being oriented within the electronic control unit to compensate for any off axis relationship between the brake control assembly and the second vehicle axis such that, when the brake control assembly is mounted upon the vehicle, the second motion sensor will sense a second motion of the vehicle relative to the second vehicle axis.

18. The method for fabrication according to claim 17 wherein step (c) includes mounting at least one of the motion sensors upon a primary circuit substrate and then mounting the circuit substrate within the electronic control unit.

The method for fabrication according to claim 17 wherein step (c) includes mounting at least one of the motion sensors upon a secondary circuit substrate that is mounted upon a primary circuit substrate and extending at an angle therefrom and then mounting the primary circuit substrate within the electronic control unit.

The method for fabrication according to claim 16 wherein, in step (b), the mounting location provides an off axis orientation of the brake control assembly relative to the vehicle axis and wherein, in step (c), the motion sensor is oriented within the electronic control unit to compensate for the off axis mounting of the brake control assembly.

21. The method for fabrication according to claim 20 wherein the vehicle axis is a longitudinal axis and said motion sensor is adapted to sense acceleration along said longitudinal axis.

22. The brake control assembly according to claim 20 wherein the vehicle axis is a lateral axis that is perpendicular to a vehicle longitudinal axis and said motion sensor is adapted to sense acceleration along said lateral axis.

23. A brake control assembly for a vehicle brake system, the vehicle having an axis, the brake control assembly comprising:

a hydraulic control valve body including electrically controlled components, said valve body adapted to be hydraulically connected to the vehicle wheel brakes;

an electronic control unit for controlling the valve body components, said electronic control unit mounted upon said hydraulic control valve body to define said brake control assembly;

means for mounting said brake control assembly upon the vehicle in a predetermined orientation relative to the vehicle axis; and

at least one motion sensor mounted within said electronic control unit, said motion sensor being oriented within said electronic control unit such that the mounting orientation of said brake control assembly relative to the vehicle and the mounting orientation of the motion sensor relative to the brake control assembly cooperate to position said motion sensor to properly sense motion of the vehicle relative to the vehicle axis.

24. The brake control assembly according to claim 23 wherein the vehicle axis is a longitudinal axis and said motion sensor is adapted to sense acceleration along said longitudinal axis.

25. The brake control assembly according to claim 23 wherein the vehicle axis is a lateral axis that is perpendicular to a vehicle longitudinal axis and said motion sensor is adapted to sense acceleration along said lateral axis.

26. The brake control assembly according to claim 23 wherein said motion sensor is a first motion sensor and the vehicle axis is a first vehicle axis, said first motion sensor sensing a first motion of the vehicle relative to the first vehicle axis and further wherein the vehicle has a second axis and a second motion sensor is mounted within said electronic control unit, said second motion sensor being oriented within said electronic control unit to compensate for the mounting of the brake control assembly such that, when the brake control assembly is mounted upon the vehicle, said second motion sensor will sense a second motion of the vehicle relative to the second vehicle axis.

27. The brake control assembly according to claim 26 wherein the first vehicle axis is perpendicular to the second vehicle axis.

28. The brake control assembly according to claim 26 wherein the vehicle has a third axis and further wherein a third motion sensor is mounted within said electronic control unit, said third motion sensor being oriented within said electronic control unit to compensate the mounting of the brake control assembly such that, when the brake control assembly is mounted upon the vehicle, said third motion sensor will sense a third motion of the vehicle relative to the third vehicle axis.

29. The brake control assembly according to claim 28 wherein the first vehicle axis is perpendicular to the second vehicle axis and further wherein the third vehicle axis is perpendicular to a plane defined by the first and second vehicle axes.
