Abstract

Treating a site within the body by, e.g., placing an endoprosthesis into the body, with a catheter having a proximal portion remaining outside the body and a shaft for positioning inside the body. The shaft includes in a distal portion a selectively expandable member which can be expanded from a small cross-sectional profile for receiving said endoprosthesis about said expandable member in a compact configuration and a large, expanded cross-sectional profile for expanding said prosthesis during placement into the body, and an elastic strip wrapped in helical fashion about said expandable member such that the strip is stretched when said expandable member is expanded to said large cross-sectional profile.

Claims

1. A catheter having a proximal portion remaining outside the patient'"'"'s body and a flexible shaft that can be positioned inside the patient'"'"'s body, the shaft including in a distal portion a selectively expandable member which can be expanded from a smaller diameter to a larger diameter, the catheter comprising a strip fixed to the catheter at opposite ends of the selectively expandable member and wrapped in a helical fashion about the expandable member such that the strip is stretched when the expandable member is expanded to the larger diameter.

The catheter of claim 1 wherein the expandable member comprises a first portion and a second portion, and wherein the strip provides greater resistance to expansion in the first portion of the expandable member than the second portion of the expandable member such that the second portion expands before the first portion as expansion force is increased.

3. The catheter of claim 2 wherein the strip is formed of a polymeric material.

4. The catheter of claim 3 wherein the polymeric material comprises a urethane.

5. The catheter of claim 3 wherein the polymeric material comprises a silastic.

6. The catheter of claim 3 wherein the polymer comprises a latex.

7. The catheter of claim 1 wherein the expandable member comprises a proximal portion, a distal portion, and a central portion, wherein the central portion of the expandable member expands prior to the proximal and distal portions, as expansion force is increased.

The catheter of claim 7 wherein the strip is wrapped in a manner that the wrap angle is greater at a location corresponding to the central portion of the expandable member than at a location corresponding to the proximal and distal portions of the expandable member to permit inflation of the central portion prior to the proximal and distal portion as expansion force is increased.

9. The catheter of claim 1 wherein the strip is wrapped in a manner that the wrap angle of the strip varies at locations corresponding to different the portions of the expandable member.

10. The catheter of claim 1 wherein the strip is wrapped in a manner that the tension of the strip varies at locations corresponding to different portions of the expandable member.

11. The catheter of claim 1 wherein the geometry of the strip varies at locations corresponding to different portions of the expandable member.

12. The catheter of claim 1 wherein the strip is wider at a location corresponding to one portion of the strip than at a location corresponding to another portion of the strip.

13. The catheter of claim 1 wherein the strip is thicker at a location corresponding to one portion of the strip than at a location corresponding to another portion of the strip.

14. The catheter of claim 1 wherein the strip is elastically stretched when the expandable member is expanded and elastically recovers when the expandable member is collapsed after expansion.

15. The catheter of claim 14 wherein the strip promotes folding of the expandable member when it is collapsed after expansion to the larger diameter.

16. The catheter of claim 1 wherein the strip has a relatively low friction surface facing away from the expandable member and a relatively high friction surface facing the expandable member.

17. The catheter of claim 1 wherein the expandable member is a fluid-inflatable balloon.

18. The catheter of claim 1 wherein the expandable member is formed of a nondistendible polymer.

19. The catheter of claim 1 further comprising an endoprosthesis carried upon the expandable member, the endoprosthesis having a proximal end and a distal end.

20. The catheter of claim 19 wherein the endoprosthesis is formed of polymeric material.

21. The catheter of claim 19 wherein the endoprosthesis is formed of metal.

22. The catheter of claim 21 wherein the metal comprises nitinol.

23. The catheter of claim 19 wherein the endoprosthesis is self-expanding.

24. The catheter of claim 19 further including members, extending over the proximal and distal ends of the endoprosthesis when the endoprosthesis is expanded the members being slidable from the ends when the ends are expanded.
