Abstract

Circuits and methods for determining the caller identification for an incoming call and for displaying such caller identification information on a video display device such as a television. A caller identification line modem determines the caller identification information, a control processor translates and/or inputs such caller identification information to a video circuit for displaying the caller identification information. Various methods for so displaying caller identification information are provided, including overlaying such information on an input video signal such as for a predetermined interval of time, generating a separate caller identification video signal, which may be placed, for example, on an unused television channel. The caller identification circuits and methods may be integrated or combined with various advanced television, video and/or telephony functions. An advanced remote control unit may be provided so that the user may determine from the video/television screen the identity of the caller, and then forward the call to a voice messaging system, forward the call to another line, answer the call on a video phone or answer the call on a separate telephone. The caller identification circuit may be provided with programmable intelligence so that incoming calls may not only be displayed on the video/television screen, but also may be desirably processed depending on the identity of the particular caller.

Claims

1. A method for displaying caller identification on a display device comprising the steps of:

displaying a plurality of signals on the display device, wherein the display device displays a main picture based on a first signal and displays a sub-picture based on a second signal;

receiving one or more incoming telephone calls on one or more telephone lines;

receiving caller identification information from the one or more incoming telephone calls on the one or more telephone lines; and

generating a caller identification signal with a signal generator, wherein the signal generator is coupled to receive caller identification data derived from the caller identification information from the one or more incoming telephone calls, wherein the signal generator receives one of the first or second signals, wherein the signal generator generates the caller identification signal based on the received one of the first or second signals and based on signals from a character generator and a background generator, wherein in response to an incoming telephone call on the one or more telephone lines, caller identification information is displayed on the display device as the sub-picture.

The method of claim 1, wherein the signal generator includes a multiplexer that receives at least the one received one of the first or second signals and signals from the character generator and the background generator, wherein the multiplexer operates synchronized with the received one of the first or second signals.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein a telephone line modem and the signal generator are integrated with the display device.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the signal generator provides the second signal for display as the sub-picture at a time when the signal generator is not displaying caller identification information as the sub-picture.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein a camera is coupled to an external signal input and provides one of the first or second signals.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the camera comprises a security or baby monitor type camera.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the caller identification signal is temporarily displayed for a predetermined length of time.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the predetermined length of time is selectable by a user.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein a telephone line modem and the signal generator are integrated with a VCR, cable box, set-top box or satellite receiver.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein a control processor provides control signals for controlling the signal generator.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the control processor also provides control signals for a video amplifier.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the video amplifier provides the first or second signal.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein a telephone line modem, the signal generator aid the control processor are integrated with a VCR, cable box, set-top box or satellite receiver.

14. A method for displaying caller identification information on a display device, comprising:

displaying images on the display device, the display device displaying images based on one or more signals and having a speaker for generating sounds associated with a displayed image;

receiving one or more telephone calls on a telephone input;

coupling the one or more telephone calls to a telephone coupled to the telephone input;

decoding information corresponding to an identification of a caller of a received telephone call with a caller ID circuit coupled to the telephone input; and

inputting user commands with a remote control;

wherein, in response to a received telephone call, displaying information identify the caller of the received telephone call on the display device and, in response to a command input by the remote control, either answering the telephone call with the telephone or controlling the telephone call to be answered by a voice messaging system, wherein the display device includes a signal generator generating a caller identification signal, wherein the signal generator receives caller identification data from the caller ID circuit, wherein the signal generator receives at least one of the one or more signals, wherein the signal generator generates the caller identification signal based on the at least one of the one or more signals and based on signals from a character generator and a background generator.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein sound from the speaker associated with a displayed image is automatically muted in response to an input from the remote control to answer the telephone call.

16. The method of claim 14, wherein the caller ID circuit is programmable to recognize one or more particular callers based on the information identifying the caller of the received telephone call.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the caller ID circuit automatically initiates action to respond to the received telephone call based on the recognition of the one or more particular callers.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the automatically initiated action includes directing the call to the voice messaging system or forwarding the call.

19. The method of claim 14, wherein a speaker is coupled to the telephone, wherein a speakerphone telephone call is initiated in response to an input from the remote control.

20. The method of claim 14, wherein a personal computer receives commands from a remote control keyboard.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the information identifying the caller of the received telephone call comprises computer-generated graphics or text.

22. The method of claim 14, wherein the caller ID circuit includes a memory and a processor, wherein the caller ID circuit retains a log of incoming received telephone calls.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the log includes information selected from the group consisting of telephone number of the caller, name of the caller, nickname of the caller, time of receipt of a call, and duration of a call.

24. The method of claim 22, wherein information in the log may be deleted by a user in response to an input from the remote control.

25. The method of claim 22, wherein information in the log is output over a computer interface or printed.

26. The method of claim 14 wherein a camera captures an image of the user, wherein the telephone and the camera operate to provide a video telephone call between the user and the caller.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein the video telephone call is operative in response to an input by the remote control.

28. The method of claim 14, wherein the voice messaging system is integrated with the display device.

29. The method of claim 14, wherein the information identifying the caller of the received telephone call is displayed on the display device for a predetermined interval of time and then the display of the information is automatically terminated.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein the predetermined interval of time is selectable by a user.

31. The method of claim 14, wherein the signal generator includes a multiplexer that receives at least one of the one or more signals and signals from the character generator and the background generator, wherein the multiplexer operates synchronized with the at least one of the one or more signals.

32. The method of claim 14, wherein the caller ID circuit and the signal generator are integrated with a VCR, cable box, set-top box or satellite receiver.

33. The method of claim 14, wherein a control processor provides control signals for controlling the signal generator.

34. The method of claim 33, wherein the control processor also provides control signal for a video amplifier.

35. The method of claim 34, wherein the video amplifier provides the at least one of the one or more signals.

36. The method of claim 34, wherein the caller ID circuit, the signal generator and the control processor are integrated with a VCR, cable box, set-top box or satellite receiver.

39. The method of claim 32, wherein the caller ID circuit includes a memory and a processor, wherein the caller ID circuit retains a log of incoming received telephone calls.

40. The method of claim 39, wherein the log includes information selected from the group consisting of telephone number of the caller, name of the caller, nickname of the caller, time of receipt of a call, and duration of a call.

41. The method of claim 39, wherein information in the log may be deleted by a user in response to an input from a remote control.

42. The method of claim 39, wherein information in the log is output over a computer interface or printed.

37. A method for displaying caller identification information on a display device, comprising:

displaying images on a display device based on one or more signals, the display device having a speaker for generating sounds associated with a displayed image;

receiving one or more telephone calls on a telephone input;

coupling the one or more telephone calls to a telephone coupled to the telephone input;

decoding information corresponding to an identification of a caller of a received telephone call with a caller ID circuit coupled to the telephone input; and

wherein, in response to a received telephone call, displaying information identifying the caller of the received telephone call on the display device, wherein the display device includes a signal generator generating a caller identification signal, wherein the signal generator receives caller identification data from the caller ID circuit, wherein the signal generator receives at least one of the one or more signals, wherein the signal generator generates the caller identification signal based on the at least one of the one or more signals and based on signals from a character signal generator and a background signal generator.

38. The method of claim 37, wherein a speaker is coupled to the telephone, wherein a speakerphone telephone call is Initiated in response to a user input.

43. The method of claim 37, wherein a camera captures an image of a user, wherein the telephone and the camera operate to provide a video telephone call between the user and the caller.

44. The method of claim 43, wherein the video telephone call is operative in response to an input by a remote control.

45. The method of claim 37, wherein sound from the speaker associated with a displayed image is automatically muted in response to an input from a remote control to answer the telephone call.

46. The method of claim 37, wherein a voice messaging system is integrated with the display device.

47. The method of claim 37, wherein the information identifying the caller of the received telephone call is displayed on the display device for a predetermined interval of time and then the display of the information is automatically terminated.

48. The method of claim 47, wherein the predetermined interval of time is selectable by a user.

49. The method of claim 37, wherein the caller ID circuit is programmable to recognize one or more particular callers based on the information identifying the caller of the received telephone call.

50. The method of claim 49, wherein the caller ID circuit automatically initiates action to respond to the received telephone call based on the recognition of the one or more particular callers.

51. The method of claim 50, wherein the automatically initiated action includes directing the call to a voice messaging system or forwarding the call.

52. The method of claim 37, wherein a personal computer receives commands from a remote control keyboard.

53. The method of claim 52, wherein the information identifying the caller of the received telephone call comprises computer-generated graphics or text.

54. The method of claim 37, wherein the signal generator includes a multiplexer that receives at least one of the one or more signals and signals from the character generator and the background generator, wherein the multiplexer operates synchronized with the at least one of the one or more signals.

55. The method of claim 37, wherein the caller ID circuit and the signal generator are integrated with a VCR, cable box, set-top box or satellite receiver.

56. The method of claim 37, wherein a control processor provides control signals for controlling the signal generator.

57. The method of claim 56, wherein the control processor also provides control signals for a video amplifier.

58. The method of claim 57, wherein the video amplifier provides the at least one of the one or more signals.

59. The method of claim 57, wherein the caller ID circuit, the signal generator and the control processor are integrated with a VCR, cable box, set-top box or satellite receiver.

60. A method for providing at least one video output signal for displaying caller identification information on a display device with a integrated system that generates one or more video signals and caller ID information, the method comprising the steps of:

providing from the integrated system the at least one video output signal for display of images on the display device;

receiving one or more telephone calls on a telephone input to the integrated system;

decoding information corresponding to an identification of a caller of a received telephone call with a caller ID circuit integral to the integrated system and coupled to the telephone input; and

wherein, in response to a received telephone call, the at least one video output signal includes information for displaying the identification of the caller of the received telephone call on the display device, wherein the integrated system includes a signal generator that generates the at least one video output signal based on the one or more video signals and caller identification data from the caller ID circuit, wherein the signal generator receives the caller identification data from the caller ID circuit, wherein the signal generator generates the at least one video output signal based on the one or more video signals and based on signals from a character signal generator and a background signal generator.

61. The method of claim 60, wherein the integrated system comprises a satellite receiver or VCR.

62. The method of claim 61, wherein the display of caller identification information is selectively operative in response to an input by a remote control.

63. The method of claim 60, wherein sound from a speaker associated with the display device is automatically muted in response to an input from a remote control.

64. The method of claim 60, wherein a voice messaging system is integrated with the display device or the integrated system.

65. The method of claim 60, wherein the information identifying the caller of the received telephone call is displayed on the display device for a predetermined interval of time and then the display of the information is automatically terminated.

66. The method of claim 65, wherein the predetermined interval of time is selectable by a user.

67. The method of claim 60, wherein the caller ID circuit is programmable to recognize one or more particular callers based on the information identifying the caller of the received telephone call.

68. The method of claim 67, wherein the caller ID circuit automatically initiates action to respond to the received telephone call based on the recognition of the one or more particular callers.

69. The method of claim 68, wherein the automatically initiated action includes displaying a name or nickname based on the recognition of the one or more particular callers.

70. The method of claim 60, wherein a speaker is coupled to a telephone coupled to the integrated system, wherein a speakerphone telephone call is initiated in response to a user input.

71. The method of claim 60, wherein a personal computer coupled to the integrated system receives commands from a remote control keyboard.

72. The method of claim 71, wherein the information identifying the caller of the received telephone call computes computer-generated graphics or text.

73. The method of claim 60, wherein the caller ID circuit includes a memory coupled to a processor, wherein the caller ID circuit retains a log of incoming received telephone calls.

74. The method of claim 73, wherein the log includes information selected from the group consisting of telephone number of the caller, name of the caller, nickname of the caller, time of receipt of a call, and duration of a call.

75. The method of claim 73, wherein information in the log may be deleted by a user in response to an input from a remote control.

76. The method of claim 73, wherein information in the log is output over a computer interface or printed.

77. The method of claim 60, wherein the integrated system comprises a cable box or set-top box.

78. The method of claim 60, wherein the signal generator includes a multiplexer that receives at least one of the one or more video signals and signals from the character generator and the background generator, wherein the multiplexer operates synchronized with the at least one of the one or more video signals.

79. The method of claim 60, wherein a control processor integral to the integrated system provides control signals for controlling the signal generator.

80. The method of claim 79, wherein the control processor also provides control signals for a video amplifier integral to the integrated system.

81. The method of claim 80, wherein the integrated system comprises a VCR, cable box, set-top box or satellite receiver.

82. The method of claim 80, wherein the video amplifier provides the at least one of the one or more signals.
