1. A digital displacement encoder comprising:

  • a mechanical actuator constructed and arranged to be displaced, with a single type of motion, to one of a null position or a plurality of activation positions in response to an externally-provided force;

    a conductive member constructed and arranged to be positioned to one of a plurality of intermediate positions in response to said displacement of said mechanical actuator;

    a contact array, comprising a plurality of activation signal contacts arranged in a substantially planar orientation, fixedly disposed proximate to said conductive member; and

    a digital signal generator comprising one or more electrical circuits electrically coupled to said plurality of activation signal contacts, and one more terminals at which output signals are provided by said one or more electrical circuits, wherein said conductive member electrically contacts a predetermined one or more of said plurality of activation signal contacts when said mechanical actuator is in each of said plurality of positions to electrically alter those of said one or more electrical circuits which are electrically coupled to said contacted activation signal contacts to cause a change in said output signals.
