1. A superfluorescent source, comprising:

  • an optical pump source generating optical radiation that is substantially unpolarized; and

a solid state laser medium that is pumped by the substantially unpolarized optical radiation, said medium having characteristics selected to generate superfluorescence having a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of at least 2 nm and a mean wavelength that is stable to within 50 ppm against polarization fluctuations in said superfluorescent source.
