1. A process for manufacturing a radioactive source wire for irradiating diseased tissue, said process comprising the steps of:
- providing a thin, flexible tube, said tube having a wall thickness, an interior surface, an exterior surface, a distal end, a proximal end, and a lumen;
enlarging the lumen of said proximal end of said tube to form a modified segment, wherein a wall thickness of said modified segment is thinner than a wall thickness of an unmodified section adjoining the modified segment;
inserting a plug into said tube, wherein a portion of said plug is located in the lumen of said unmodified section;
inserting a radioactive core into the modified segment of said tube; and
sealing said distal end and said proximal end of said tube;
said tube, plug, and radioactive core forming a composite source wire for performing radiation treatment.

Abstract
A flexible source wire is provided containing a radioactive source that is capable of maneuvering through a tortuous narrow passage to a treatment site within the body. This source wire includes an elongated flexible housing tube with its proximal end (i.e., the treatment end) modified to receive a radioactive core. The preferred embodiment of the source wire is constructed from a material exhibiting little or no memory retention when bent such as certain nickel/titanium alloys. Both ends of the source wire are sealed and the proximal end of the source wire is rounded to allow ease of movement as it travels through the bends and turns in the body.

providing a thin, flexible tube, said tube having a wall thickness, an interior surface, an exterior surface, a distal end, a proximal end, and a lumen;
enlarging the lumen of said proximal end of said tube to form a modified segment, wherein a wall thickness of said modified segment is thinner than a wall thickness of an unmodified section adjoining the modified segment;
inserting a plug into said tube, wherein a portion of said plug is located in the lumen of said unmodified section;
inserting a radioactive core into the modified segment of said tube; and
sealing said distal end and said proximal end of said tube;

12. A process for manufacturing a radioactive source wire for irradiating diseased tissue, said process comprising:

providing a thin, flexible tube having a wall thickness, an interior surface, an outer surface, a distal end, a proximal end, and a lumen;
enlarging the lumen of said proximal end of said tube to form a modified segment, wherein a wall thickness of said modified segment is thinner than a wall thickness of an unmodified section adjoining said modified segment;
tapering a portion of said interior surface of said tube, said tapered portion localized between said unmodified section and said modified segment;
inserting a backbone wire into the lumen of said distal end of said tube for a predetermined distance;
applying a heat sink to the outer surface of said tube, said heat sink having a proximal end situated a distance Y from the proximal end of said tube;
inserting a radioactive core into the lumen of the proximal end of said tube a distance X+Y from the proximal end of said tube; and
applying sufficient heat to said proximal end of said tube to melt said proximal end extending beyond said heat sink.

13. A process for manufacturing a radioactive source wire for irradiating diseased tissue, said process comprising:

providing a thin, flexible tube having a wall thickness, an interior surface, an outer surface, a distal end, a proximal end, and a lumen;
enlarging the lumen of said proximal end of said tube to form a modified segment, wherein a wall thickness of said modified segment is thinner than a wall thickness of an unmodified section adjoining said modified segment;
tapering a portion of said interior surface of said tube, said tapered portion localized between said unmodified section and said modified segment;
inserting a plug into said tube, wherein a portion of said plug is located in the lumen of said unmodified section;
applying a heat sink to the outer surface of said tube, said heat sink having a proximal end situated a distance Y from the proximal end of said tube;
inserting a radioactive core into the lumen of the proximal end of said tube a distance X+Y from the proximal end of said tube; and
applying sufficient heat to said proximal end of said tube to melt said proximal end extending beyond said heat sink.

14. A process for manufacturing a radioactive source wire for irradiating diseased tissue, said process comprising:

providing a thin, flexible tube having a wall thickness, an interior surface, an outer surface, a distal end, a proximal end, and a lumen;
enlarging the lumen of said proximal end of said tube to form a modified segment, wherein a wall thickness of said modified segment is thinner than a wall thickness of an unmodified section adjoining said modified segment;
tapering a portion of said interior surface of said tube, said tapered portion localized between said unmodified section and said modified segment;
providing a flexible backbone wire having a first end, a second end and a circumference;
inserting said first end of said backbone wire into the lumen of said distal end of said tube;
threading said backbone wire through said lumen until said fist end extends beyond said proximal end of said tube;
applying an epoxy around the circumference of said backbone wire extending from said proximal end of said tube;
removing excess epoxy along said predetermined distance of said lumen and said tube;
inserting a radioactive core into the lumen of said proximal end of said tube; and
sealing said distal end and said proximal end of said tube.

15. A process for manufacturing a housing tube for a source wire for irradiating diseased tissue, said process comprising:

providing a thin, flexible tube having a wall thickness, an interior surface, an outer surface, a distal end, a proximal end, and a lumen;
enlarging the lumen of said proximal end of said tube to form a modified segment, wherein a wall thickness of said modified segment is thinner than a wall thickness of a unmodified section adjoining said modified segment; and
