1. A modulated backscatter interrogator, comprising:

  • a transmitter that transmits a first transmitted signal;

    a receiver that receives a reflected first transmitted signal;

    a demodulator that obtains a received PSK modulated subcarrier signal from the reflected first transmitted signal;

    a subcarrier demodulator that obtains an information signal from the received PSK modulated subcarrier signal, wherein the subcarrier demodulator includes;

    a shift register that receives a signal representative of the received PSK modulated subcarrier signal, at least one exclusive-or device that performs an exclusive-or function on signals from at least two different outputs of the shift register; and

    a plurality of correlators each having an accumulate circuit and an integrate and dump circuit that receives an input from the exclusive-or device, each of the correlators testing a different clock phase in order to estimate which of the different clock phases is closest to a clock phase for a set of bits.
