Abstract

A system and method for dynamically restoring communications within a network following an outage comprising a database containing the current configuration of switching elements within the network and a plurality of instructions resident on a memory device for operating a control computer wherein the plurality of instructions includes a code segment for receiving alarms from the switching elements identifying an outage, a code segment for selecting restoration switching elements based upon the configuration of the switching elements in the database, and a code segment for implementing a restoration route utilizing the restoration switching elements to restore communications within the network are disclosed.

Claims

1. A system for dynamically restoring communications within a network following an outage comprising:

a database storing a configuration of switching elements within said network; and

a control computer, configured for;

receiving alarms from said switching elements identifying said outage,

prompting an operator to select one of pre-plan restoration and dynamic restoration,

in response to input from the operator selecting pre-plan restoration, implementing a pre-plan restoration route, and

in response to input from the operator selecting dynamic restoration, implementing a restoration route by selecting restoration switching elements based upon the configuration of said switching elements in said database.

2. The system as recited in claim 1 wherein the control computer is further configured for generating a restoration route using said restoration switching elements.

3. The system as recited in claim 1 wherein the control computer is further configured for controlling communication between said control computer and said switching elements.

4. The system as recited in claim 3 wherein the control computer is further configured for translating commands from a generic communications format into a device specific protocol.

5. The system as recited in claim 1 wherein said database includes individual partitions corresponding to each of said switching elements.

6. The system as recited in claim 1 wherein the control computer is further configured for sending connect and disconnect commands to said restoration switching elements.

7. The system as recited in claim 1 further comprising a backup communications gateway and network coupled to the control computer for communicating with said switching elements in the event of a primary communications failure.

8. The system as recited in claim 1 wherein the control computer is further configured for determining the current configuration of said switching elements and updating said database to reflect said current configuration of said switching elements.

9. A method for dynamically restoring communications within a network following an outage comprising:

storing the configuration of switching elements within said network in a database;

receiving alarms in real time from said switching elements identifying said outage;

prompting an operator to select one of pre-plan restoration and dynamic restoration;

in response to input from the operator selecting pre-plan restoration, implementing a pre-plan restoration route;

in response to input from the operator selecting dynamic restoration, implementing a restoration route by selecting restoration switching elements based upon the configuration of said switching elements in said database.

10. The method as recited in claim 9 further including the step of generating a restoration route using said restoration switching elements.

11. The method as recited in claim 9 further including the step of controlling communication between control computer and said switching elements.

12. The method as recited in claim 11 wherein the step of controlling communication between said control computer and said switching elements further comprises translating commands from a generic communications format into a device specific protocol.

13. The method as recited in claim 9 wherein the step of implementing said restoration route further includes sending connect and disconnect commands to said restoration switching elements.

14. The method as recited in claim 9 further including automatically communicating with the switching elements via a backup communications gateway and network in the event of a primary communications failure.

15. The method as recited in claim 9 further including determining the current configuration of said switching elements and updating said database to reflect said current configuration of said switching element.
