1. A compact, hand held device for curing photosensitive dental compositions curable by way of irradiation with light of predetermined wavelength comprising:
- (a) a handle configured for gripping by a user;
(b) a light emitting diode head assembly secured to said handle including at least one light emitting diode constructed to emit light of said predetermined wavelength in response to an applied operating current, said light emitting diode having a characteristic maximum luminous power output where increasing the current does not increase the optical power output; and
(c) a current supply coupled to said light emitting diode, said current supply operating said light emitting diode at a luminous power output of at least about 85 percent of its characteristic maximum luminous power output.

1. A compact, hand held device for curing photosensitive dental compositions curable by way of irradiation with light of predetermined wavelength comprising:

(a) a handle configured for gripping by a user;
(b) a light emitting diode head assembly secured to said handle including at least one light emitting diode constructed to emit light of said predetermined wavelength in response to an applied operating current, said light emitting diode having a characteristic maximum luminous power output where increasing the current does not increase the optical power output; and
(c) a current supply coupled to said light emitting diode, said current supply operating said light emitting diode at a luminous power output of at least about 85 percent of its characteristic maximum luminous power output. - View Dependent Claims (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10)
(d) said plurality of light emitting diodes have a plurality of output paths; and
(e) said plurality of light emitting diodes form an axial array characterized by a plurality of focal points, whereby said light emitting diodes are adapted to generate a position insensitive optical field.

8. The device according to claim 1, wherein said light emitting diode has a radiant wavelength output in the range of from about 440 to about 500 nanometers.

9. The device according to claim 1, wherein said light emitting diode head assembly is secured to said handle by way of a flexible arm which is bendable and rotatable to fixed positions.

10. The device according to claim 1, further comprising a protective sheath disposed about said light emitting diode head assembly.

11. A compact hand held device for curing photosensitive dental compositions curable by way of a irradiation with light of predetermined wavelength comprising:

(a) a first interchangable diode assembly including a single light emitting diode constructed to emit light of said predetermined wavelength, said light emitting diode having a characteristic maximum luminous power output;
(b) a second interchangeable light emitting diode assembly including a plurality of light emitting diodes constructed to emit light at said predetermined wavelength, each of said diodes having a characteristic maximum luminous power output;
(c) a handle configured for gripping by a user having means for releasably securing said first interchangeable light emitting diode assembly and said second interchangeable light emitting diode assembly; and
(d) a current supply configured for supplying current to said first interchangeable light emitting diode assembly and said second interchangeable light emitting diode assembly adapted for operating each of said light emitting diodes at a luminous power output of at least about 85 percent of its characteristic maximum luminous power output. - View Dependent Claims (12, 13)

14. A method for curing a photosensitive dental composition for repairing a dental cavity or a dental surface, said composition being curable by way of irradiation with light of predetermined wavelength, said method comprising:
-
(a) applying the dental composition to the cavity or dental surface; and
(b) irradiating said composition with light of said preselected wavelength generated by way of a light emitting diode having a characteristic maximum luminous power output where increasing a current supplied to said light emitting diode does not increase its optical power output, wherein said light emitting diode is operated at a luminous power output of at least about 85 percent of said characteristic maximum luminous power output. - View Dependent Claims (15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20)
