Abstract

The subject invention pertains to a control fascia adapted to be attached to one side of the blade of an ice hockey or street hockey stick. Ridges having a vertical component extending above the control fascia surface enable improved puck or ball control while offering freedom from unraveling, and minimum weight. The control fascias can be easily manufactured at low cost and are suitable for bearing logos or advertisements.

Claims

1. A control fascia adapted to be adhesively adhered to a face of a hockey stick blade, said control fascia comprising:

a blade side and a control side, said control side having a plurality of ridges having a vertical component and having a height H_r of from about 0.010 inch to about 0,075 inch, an average valley width V_av of from about 0,010 inch to about 1.0 inch, and a granularity such that improved control of a scoring piece is obtained thereby, said control fascia supplied as a substantially planar sheet material to be applied to a face of said blade without requiring wrapping around said blade to effect mounting thereto.

2. The control fascia of claim 1, wherein said granularity satisfies the relationship $0.03<$

3. The control fascia of claim 1 further comprising an adhesive layer on said blade side of said control fascia.

4. The control fascia of claim 3 wherein superficial to said adhesive layer is a release film.

5. The control fascia of claim 1 further comprising an adhesive-impregnated support material on said blade side of said control fascia.

6. The control fascia of claim 5 wherein said support material is selected from the group consisting of woven and non-woven textiles, metal meshes, and plastic meshes.

7. The control fascia of claim 5 wherein positioned superficial to said adhesive-impregnated support material is a release film.

8. The control fascia of claim 1 wherein said ridges have an average height of about 0.020 inch and a valley width of from about 0.20 to 0.75 inch.

9. The control fascia of claim 1 wherein said ridges having a vertical component comprise vertical ridges substantially perpendicular to a bottom surface of said blade, said vertical ridges having a spacing of from about 0.2 inch to about 0.75 inch.

10. The control fascia of claim 9 further comprising a plurality of horizontal ridges having a separation of from about 0.1 inch to about 0.50 inch, said plurality of horizontal ridges located on at least the lower portion of said blade.

11. The control fascia of claim 1 wherein said ridges having a vertical component comprise arcs of circular ridges substantially concentric to each other.

12. The control fascia of claim 11 wherein said ridges comprise a pattern comprising two sets of substantially non-overlapping arcs of circular ridges of opposing curvature, the center of said pattern adapted to be positioned intermediate a heel portion and a toe portion of said blade.

13. The control fascia of claim 1 wherein said ridges comprise a sunburst pattern whose most central part is adapted to be positioned intermediate a heel portion and a toe portion of said blade.

14. The control fascia of claim 1 wherein said ridges comprise overlapping arcs of opposite curvature, the focal points of said arcs coinciding with a line on said blade parallel to a bottom surface of said blade.

15. The control fascia of claim 1 wherein said ridges comprise overlapping arcs of opposite curvature, the focal points of said arcs coinciding with a line parallel to a bottom of said blade but not located on said blade.

16. The control fascia of claim 1 wherein said control fascia has imprinted thereon a logo.

17. The control fascia of claim 5 wherein said support material has imprinted thereon a logo.

18. The control fascia of claim 1 wherein said control side of said control fascia comprises a transparent or substantially transparent polymeric material such that a logo may be viewed through said control side of said control fascia.

19. The control fascia of claim 3 wherein said adhesive comprises a thermosettable adhesive.

20. A hockey stick having improved control during play of street hockey with a ball scoring piece, said hockey stick having a blade, said blade having adhered to it at least one control fascia in accordance with claim 1.

21. The hockey stick of claim 20 wherein said control fascia comprises a hard, low friction thermoplastic or thermoset.

22. A hockey stick suitable for play of hockey utilizing a puck, said stick having molded onto a blade thereof a soft, high friction thermoset or thermoplastic control fascia in accordance with claim 1.

23. A hockey stick having a substantially planar blade, and molded onto said blade thereof, a control fascia having a plurality of ridges having a vertical component and having a height H_r of from about 0.010 inch to about 0,075 inch, an average valley width V_av of from about 0.010 inch to about 1.0 inch, and a granularity such that improved control of a scoring piece is obtained thereby.

24. The hockey stick of claim 23 wherein said granularity satisfies the relationship $0.03<$
