1. A system for an internal combustion engine of a vehicle, the engine coupled to an emission control device susceptible to sulfur contamination, the system comprising:

  • a sensor coupled downstream of the emission control device, said sensor providing a first and second signal, said first signal indicative of exhaust air-fuel ratio and said second signal indicative of nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas; and

    a controller for generating an indication of vehicle activity based on an operating condition;

    determining a performance impact of performing a decontamination cycle, where said decontamination cycle reduces the sulfur contamination; and

    operating the engine based on said indication, said performance impact, said first signal, and said second signal.
