Abstract

Thousands of patients prone to irregular and sometimes life threatening heart rhythms have miniature heart-monitoring devices, such as defibrillators and cardioverters, implanted in their chests. These devices detect abnormal heart rhythms and automatically apply electrical therapy to restore normal heart function. Significant parts of these devices include the microprocessor and stored instructions, or algorithms, that govern how the devices interpret and react to electrical signals indicative of normal or abnormal heart rhythms. These algorithms generally use the time intervals between successive heart beats, or cardiac events, as a key factor in therapy decisions. To ensure accuracy of interval measurements, the inventor devised new methods for processing heart electrical signals, some of which ensure accurate interval measurements without unduly delaying therapy decisions or consuming significant battery power. One of these new methods detects an abnormal interval measurement and either disqualifies the abnormal interval from use in making therapy decisions or divides the abnormal interval into two or more other intervals, thereby facilitating identification and treatment of abnormal rhythmic conditions both efficiently and accurately.

Claims

1. A medical device comprising:

means for calculating a set of two or more intervals based on sensed electrical signals indicative of cardiac events, with each interval representing a time between successive cardiac events of a first type;

means for identifying an interval having a predetermined size relative to one or more other intervals in the set of intervals;

means for determining whether another type of cardiac event, different from the first type, occurred during a specific portion of the identified interval; and

means, responsive to the means for determining whether another type of cardiac event occurred, for dividing the identified interval into two or more new intervals.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein at least two of the new intervals have different durations.

3. A medical device comprising:

means for identifying at least one interval having a predetermined size relative to one or more other intervals in a set of intervals based on physiological events; and

means for defining the identified interval into two or more new intervals, with at least two of the new intervals having different durations.

4. A method comprising:

calculating a set of two or more intervals based on sensed electrical signals indicative of cardiac events, with each interval representing a time between successive cardiac events of a first type;

identifying an interval having a predetermined size relative to one or more other intervals in the set of intervals;

determining whether another type of cardiac event, different from the first type, occurred during a specific portion of the identified interval; and

dividing the identified interval into two or more new intervals.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein at least two of the new intervals have different durations.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein the recited acts are performed in the order recited.

7. A method of processing a set of one or more intervals corresponding to two or more cardiac events, the method comprising:

identifying at least one interval having a predetermined size relative to one or more other intervals in the set of intervals;

defining the identified interval into two or more new intervals, with at least two of the new intervals having different durations; and

calculating a quantity based on one or more of intervals of the set of intervals and at least one of the two or more new intervals.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein calculating a quantity comprises:

calculating an average interval based on one or more of intervals of the set of intervals and at least one of the new intervals.

9. A machine readable medium comprising:

one or more instructions for calculating a set of two or more intervals based on data representative of sensed electrical signals indicative of cardiac events, with each interval representing a time between successive cardiac events of a first type;

one or more instructions for identifying an interval having a predetermined size relative to one or more other intervals in the set of intervals;

one or more instructions for determining whether another type of cardiac event, different from the first type, occurred during a specific portion of the identified interval; and

one or more instructions for dividing the identified interval into two or more new intervals if the other type of cardiac event occurred during the specific portion of the identified interval.

10. The medium of claim 9, wherein at least two of the new intervals have different durations.

11. The medium of claim 9, wherein the medium comprises a memory.

12. An implantable heart-monitoring device comprising:

one or more leads for sensing electrical signals indicative of cardiac events;

a therapy circuit for delivering electrical energy through one or more of the leads; and

a monitoring circuit for monitoring the electrical signals through one or more of the leads,

the monitoring circuit comprising;

means for calculating a set of two or more intervals based on the sensed electrical signals, with each interval representing a time between successive cardiac events of a first type;

means for identifying an interval having a predetermined size relative to one or more other intervals in the set of intervals;

means for determining whether another type of cardiac event, different from the first type, occurred during a specific portion of the identified interval; and

means, responsive to the means for determining whether another type of cardiac event occurred, for defining two or more new intervals based on the identified interval.

13. The heart-monitoring device of claim 12, wherein at least two of the new intervals have different durations.

14. The heat-monitoring device of claim 12, further comprising:

means for computing an average based on at least one of the intervals based on the sense electrical signals and at least one of the two or more new intervals.

15. An implantable heart-monitoring device comprising:

one or more leads for sensing electrical signals indicative of cardiac events;

a therapy circuit for delivering electrical energy through one or more of the leads; and

a monitoring circuit for monitoring the electrical signals through one or more of the leads,

the monitoring circuit comprising;

means for calculating a set of two or more intervals based on the sensed electrical signals, with each interval representing a time between successive cardiac events of a first type;

means for identifying an interval having a predetermined size relative to one or more other intervals in the set of intervals,

means for determining whether another type of cardiac event, different from the first type, occurred during a specific portion of the identified interval; and

at least means, responsive to the means for determining whether another type of cardiac event occurred, for disqualifying the identified interval from further processing related to the monitoring circuit.

16. The heart-monitoring device of claim 15, wherein the first type of cardiac event is an atrial event and the other type of cardiac event is a ventricular event.

17. The heart-monitoring device of claim 15, wherein the means for disqualifying the identified interval from further processing comprises means for deleting or omitting the identified interval and one or more other intervals in the set of intervals from further processing.

18. An implantable bean-monitoring device comprising:

one or more leads for sensing electrical signals indicative of cardiac events;

a therapy circuit for delivering electrical energy through one or more of the leads; and

a monitoring circuit for monitoring the electrical signals through one or more of the leads,

the monitoring circuit comprising;

means for calculating a set of two or more intervals based on the sensed electrical signals, with each interval representing a time between successive cardiac events of a first type;

means for identifying an interval having a predetermined size relative to one or more other intervals in the set of intervals;

means for determining whether another type of cardiac event, different from the fist type, occurred during a specific portion of the identified interval; and

at least means, responsive to the means for determining whether another type of cardiac event occurred, for dividing the identified interval into two or more new intervals.

19. The heart-monitoring device of claim 18, wherein the first type of cardiac event is an atrial event and the other type of cardiac event is a ventricular event.

20. The heart-monitoring device of claim 18:

wherein the identified interval has first and second associated event markers; and

wherein the means for dividing the identified interval into two or more new intervals comprises;

means for defining or inserting at least one synthetic event marker between the first and second associated event markers;

means for calculating a first new interval based on the first associated event marker and the one synthetic marker; and

means for calculating a second new interval based on a second associated event marker and the one synthetic marker, with the second new interval having a different duration than the first new interval.

21. The heart-monitoring device of claim 18, wherein at least two of the new intervals have different durations.
