Explosives disrupter
First Claim
1. An explosives disrupter for de-arming explosives devices, comprising:
- a barrel for housing a projectile, the barrel having two ends and having a muzzle at a first end;
a breech connected to a second end of the barrel, the breech having an inner surface and an outside diameter;
a firing mechanism contained within the breech, the firing mechanism further comprising;
a piston having an outside surface, a front end, and a back end, the front end formed to include a protrusion and the back end formed to include a recess, the recess having an inside surface and a bottom, the piston further formed to include an aperture between the inside surface of the recess and the outside surface of the piston;
a slider having a chamfered edge contained within the recess, the chamfered edge being distal from the front end of the piston;
a ball bearing contained within the aperture and interposed between the slider and a recess in the breech; and
means contained within the recess in the piston and interposed between the bottom of the recess and the slider for urging the chamfered edge of the slider against the ball bearing, the slider further urging the ball bearing into the recess in the breech, means for triggering the firing mechanism; and
a semi-rigid, flexible support system attached to the barrel, wherein when the disrupter is discharged, the disrupter recoils in a substantially in-line manner.

Abstract
A portable explosives disrupter for de-arming improvised explosive devices includes a barrel for housing a projectile, a mechanism for firing the projectile from the barrel, a breech which may be adapted to house a variety of firing mechanisms, a semi-rigid, flexible support system for orienting the device in relation to a target and minimizing the effects of recoil on the accuracy of the device, and a means for accurately aiming the explosives disrupter at a target. Three different firing mechanisms are provided, the first employing a firing pin and shock tubing, the second employing a metal sphere and shock tubing, and the third employing a firing piston and a source of compressed air.
