Methods and devices to expand applications of intraoperative radiation probes
First Claim
1. A device for locating radiolabeled tissue comprising:
- a) a nuclear probe having at least one radiation detector positioned in a distal end of a body-insertable structure, said structure configured to receive radiation emanating from a labeled target source within a limited area located distal or lateral to the distal end of the radiation detector, and b) indicator means external of the nuclear probe, the indicator means in communication with the detector, to provide a quantitative measure of the amount of radiation emanating from the labeled source targeted and sensed by the detector, c) the device including transmission means therein or thereon the distal end for use in locating the position, within a space in a human body, of the distal end of the probe, d) the indicator means providing an image of the position of the distal probe within a patient in conjunction with the display of the quantitative measure of the radiation.

Abstract
A device for locating radiopharmaceutical labeled diseased or malfunctioning candidate cells within a human body and a method for using the device. The method includes the labeling of target cells in a body with a radionuclide and the identification in situ of the candidate cells using a body insertable nuclear probe sensitive to the presence of the radionuclide label. More particularly, the invention relates to using a beta or gamma probe to locate labeled cells, also referred to as candidate cells while simultaneously generating an MRI image and/or a visual image. The device may also include attachments to the distal tip if the probe which allows the position of the tip within the body to be tracked and recorded or the aperture to be varied in size.

6. A device for mapping radiolabeled tissue comprising:
-
a) nuclear probe having at least one radiation detector positioned in a distal end of a body-insertable tubular structure, said tubular structure including activation limiting means to limit the activation of the radiation detector emanating from a target source within a limited area located distal or lateral to the distal end of the radiation detector, b) positioning means attached to the probe for locating the position, within a defined space, of the distal end of the tubular structure and, in turn the position of the source of radiation detected by the radiation detector, and transmitting information regarding the probe distal end position to display means external thereto, c) indicator means external to the probe for receiving a signal transmitted by the radiation detector quantitatively indicative of the amount of radiation incident on the radiation detector, from the target source, d) said indicator means being capable of storing the probe distal end position information and the quantitatively indicative amount of radiation incident on the radiation detector and generating a viewable image of the position of the source of radiation and the quantitative amount of radiation at said position. - View Dependent Claims (7, 8)
