Abstract

A mid-mount type lawn tractor having idle wheels disposed at one end in a fore and aft direction of a vehicle body, drive wheels disposed at the other end in the fore and aft direction of the vehicle body, a mower unit connected to the vehicle body between the idle wheels and drive wheels. The lawn tractor includes a wheel support frame supporting the idle wheels and pivotably connected to the vehicle body. A pivotal movement of the wheel support frame relative to the vehicle body displaces the idle wheels relative to the vehicle body, to produce a running posture or a jack-up posture lifting at least part of the vehicle body. The pivotal movement of the wheel support frame is caused by a jack device.

Claims

1. A lawn tractor comprising:

a vehicle body extending in a fore and aft direction with respect to a traveling direction;

a first wheel unit having a pair of front wheels provided right and left with respect to the traveling direction;

a second wheel unit having a plurality of rear wheels;

a mower unit connected to said vehicle body between said first and second wheel units;

a wheel support frame supporting said first wheel unit and connected to said vehicle body, said wheel support frame pivotal about a longitudinal axis extending in the fore and aft direction,

wherein said wheel support frame and said first wheel unit are pivotally displaceable about the longitudinal axis relative to said vehicle body to switch over said vehicle body from a running posture to a jack-up posture, with said second wheel unit and one of said pair of front wheels of said first wheel unit contacting the ground, and with said one front wheel acting as a reaction point on the ground to switch over said vehicle body from the running posture to the jack-up posture, and

wherein, in said jack-up posture, said vehicle body is lifted up from the ground about a wheel axis of said second wheel unit, the other front wheel is lifted up from the ground, and a space for servicing said mower unit is defined between said mower unit and the ground; and

a jack device for swinging said wheel support frame to produce said running posture and said jack-up posture.

2. A lawn tractor as defined in claim 1, wherein said first wheel unit is an idle wheel unit, and said second wheel unit is a drive wheel unit.

3. A lawn tractor as defined in claim 2, wherein said idle wheel unit includes a pair of right and left idle wheels supported by right and left ends of said wheel support frame.

A lawn tractor as defined in claim 1 wherein said longitudinal axis is disposed between a first support point supporting said one front wheel and a second support point supporting the other front wheel, and said wheel support frame is_supported by said vehicle body to be pivotable about said longitudinal axis a distance from one of said first and second support points to said longitudinal axis being greater than a distance from the other support point to said longitudinal axis.

A lawn tractor as defined in claim 3, wherein said idle wheels are caster type wheels each supported by said wheel support frame to be swivelable about a caster axis, and lock means is provided for releasably locking one of said caster type wheels such that a wheel axis of said locked caster type wheel is parallel to said axis about which said wheel support frame is pivotable relative to said vehicle body.

A lawn tractor as defined in claim 1, wherein said mower unit is connected to said vehicle body through a pair of front and rear pivotal links vertically pivotably supported by said vehicle body, and link lock means is provided for locking against downward pivotal movement one of said front and rear pivotal links close to said wheel support frame.

7. A lawn tractor as defined in claim 3, wherein said jack device is connected to said wheel support frame or said vehicle body through play-accommodating means for allowing said wheel support frame to roll about said axis relative to said vehicle body.

8. A lawn tractor as defined in claim 1, wherein said jack device is a manually operable screw type jack device.

9. A lawn tractor as defined in claim 1, wherein an engine is disposed rearwardly of a wheel axis of said second wheel unit.

A lawn tractor as defined in claim 1, wherein said pair of front wheels comprise a pair of caster wheels each supported by said wheel support frame to be swivelable about a caster axis, and wherein in said jack-up posture said one front wheel contacting the ground is swiveled about said caster axis to be oriented substantially at right angles to said rear wheels in plan view.

11. A lawn tractor comprising:

a vehicle body extending fore and aft with respect to a traveling direction;

a first wheel unit disposed at one end in a fore and aft direction of said vehicle body;

a second wheel unit disposed at the other end in the fore and aft direction of said vehicle body;

a mower unit connected to said vehicle body between said first and second wheel units;

a wheel support frame supporting said first wheel unit and pivotally connected to said vehicle body, with the first wheel unit pivotally displaceable relative to said vehicle body between a running posture and a rotated, static jack-up posture in which the vehicle body is lifted up from the ground about a wheel axis of said second wheel unit and a space for servicing said mower unit is defined between said mower unit and the ground; and

a jack device for swinging said first wheel unit to produce said running posture and said jack-up posture,

wherein said wheel support frame is pivotal about a longitudinal axis extending in the fore and aft direction of the vehicle body to move the wheel support frame between the running posture and the rotated, static jack-up posture.

A lawn tractor as defined in claim 11, wherein said pair of front wheels comprise a pair of caster wheels each supported by said wheel support frame to be swivelable about a caster axis, and wherein in said jack-up posture said one front wheel contacting the ground is swiveled about said caster axis to be oriented substantially at right angles to said rear wheels in plan view.

A lawn tractor as defined in claim 11, wherein said longitudinal axis is disposed between a first support point supporting said one front wheel and a second support point supporting the other front wheel, and said wheel support frame is supported by said vehicle body to be pivotable about said longitudinal axis, a distance from one of said first and second support points to said longitudinal axis being greater than a distance from the other support point to said longitudinal axis.
