1. A method for removing mercury from a boiler flue gas comprising:

  • providing in one of powdered and slurried form at least one sorbent selected from the group consisting of;

    alkali metals, alkaline earth elements and combinations thereof, in a cumulative stoichiometric molar ratio of alkaline earth and alkali metal to sulfur of less than 1 mole alkaline earth and alkali metal/mole sulfur;

    injecting the sorbent into a combustion system having a boiler and a stack at a point upstream of the stack so as to contact the sorbent with a flue gas containing mercury thereby capturing mercury in particulate form; and

    removing the particulate mercury from the flue gas at a point upstream of the stack.
