1. Method for detecting a rough road condition, comprising the steps of:
- i) sensing the acceleration of a vehicle with a longitudinal acceleration sensor, ii) evaluating the magnitude and duration of the acceleration at several points of time including incrementing or decrementing a counter when the magnitude of an acceleration signal exceeds a predetermined fist threshold value and remains in excess of a third threshold value that is lower than the first threshold value for a predetermined period of time, iii) determining whether there is a certain pattern in the magnitude and duration of the acceleration evaluated in step ii, and iv) detecting the rough road condition as a result of the pattern determined in step iii, wherein the pattern of step iii includes resetting the counter to a start value if the acceleration within a gate time does not exceed the first threshold value on at least two occasions.

A device for detecting a rough road section in a vehicle route comprises an acceleration sensor for sensing the acceleration of a vehicle, an evaluation device for evaluating the acceleration at several points of time, and a detection device for detecting the rough road section with regard to the evaluation results. A speed control method according to the present invention comprises the following steps: detecting a rough road section, and fixing a nominal speed in response to the detection. A speed control system includes a rough road detection device and a speed controller which controls the speed of the vehicle according to the rough road detection.

5. Device for the rough road detection, comprising:

an acceleration sensor for sensing the acceleration of a vehicle, an evaluation device for evaluating the acceleration at several instances of time and for determining whether there is a certain pattern in the course of acceleration, and a detection device for detecting the rough road section with regard to the evaluation results, a threshold value monitoring device for monitoring whether the acceleration exceeds a first threshold value, a first chronometer for measuring the time interval that the acceleration exceeds the first threshold value and remains above a third threshold value that is lower than the first threshold value, a counter for counting a detected signal only when the signal exceeds the first threshold value and remains above the third threshold value in a fixed predetermined gate time set by the first chronometer. - View Dependent Claims (6, 7, 8)
