1. A portable light generating apparatus comprisinga power cord;
- a ballast circuit receiving power from the power cord and comprising a single self-oscillation circuit comprising a bi-directional diode and a single protection circuit comprising a thyristor;
a plurality of fluorescent lamps independently connectable in parallel to the ballast circuit such that all of the plurality of fluorescent lamps receive power from the single self-oscillation circuit and protection against overload from the single protection circuit; and
an enclosure assembly fixedly attached to a first end of the power cord and further enclosing the ballast circuit and the fluorescent lamps.

Abstract
A hand-held fluorescent lamp assembly powered by typical line supply of 120 VAC, 60 Hz via an attached power cord and employing multiple commonly available fluorescent lamps. The assembly includes switches to independently control the multiple fluorescent lamps. The assembly includes lightweight solid state power regulation components. The power regulation circuit employs a self-oscillating circuit that is approximately matched in frequency of oscillation to the natural frequency of the fluorescent lamp load to automatically ignite the fluorescent lamps. The power regulation circuit includes circuit elements to automatically protect the ballast circuit and lamps from overdrawing in the run state and from abnormal load conditions.

1. A portable light generating apparatus comprising
a power cord; -

13. A handheld fluorescent light assembly comprising:

a housing having a handle sized so as to permit a user to grasp the housing and a fluorescent light tube receiving area wherein the handle defines a hollow space;
a first and second fluorescent light assemblies positioned within the light tube receiving area of the housing such that when the two fluorescent light assemblies are luminescing, light emanates outward from the fluorescent light tube receiving area;
a ballast circuit positioned within the hollow space of the handle of the housing wherein the ballast circuit includes a plug and receptacle that is adapted to be plugged into a wall power supply such that the ballast circuit receives standard AC power and wherein the ballast circuit includes a bi-directional diode and at least one oscillating transistor pair that produces a high frequency output voltage and selectively provides the high frequency output voltage to the two fluorescent light assemblies so as to induce the fluorescent light assemblies to luminesce, wherein the ballast circuit is configured to provide a substantially constant amplitude high frequency voltage signal to the two fluorescent light assemblies and the two fluorescent light assemblies are adapted to both ignite and luminesce with the substantially constant amplitude voltage such that the high frequency output voltage signal being provided to the two fluorescent light assemblies is self-limited during luminescence of the light assemblies thereby reducing the size of components of the ballast circuit positioned within the hollow space such that the size of the ballast circuit does not exceed 1 by 1.5 by 2.7 inches and wherein the number of discrete electrical components needed to operate the fluorescent light assemblies does not exceed 45; and
first and second switches in communication with the ballast circuit and the first and second fluorescent light assemblies that enable selective luminescence of the first and second fluorescent light assemblies. - View Dependent Claims (14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20)
