1. An opto-electronic device, comprising:

  • an optical modulator operable to modulate an optical signal beam at an optical carrier frequency to produce modulated signal sidebands at different sideband frequencies;

    an optical medium disposed to receive said signal beam from said optical modulator and operable to produce a Brillouin scattering process in response to optical excitation; and

    a pump laser operable to produce at least one pump beam at an optical pump frequency to be coupled into said optical medium to propagate in an opposite direction to said signal beam, said pump beam having a power level sufficient to cause a stimulated Brillouin scattering process in said optical medium which produces a Brillouin scattering signal in the same direction as said signal beam, wherein said optical carrier frequency and said optical pump frequency are selected relative to each other so that said Brillouin scattering signal is at a frequency of a selected sideband in said signal beam to amplify said selected sideband.
