1. A safety needle assembly comprising:
- a needle having a pointed tip; and
at least one generally planar wing attached via a pivot pin to the needle, the wing(s) being movable between an unguarded position wherein the tip of the needle is exposed to facilitate insertion of the needle and a guarded position wherein access to the tip of the needle is inhibited so as to mitigate a likelihood of an inadvertent needle stick, and wherein the pivot pin is mounted in a spaced apart configuration from the needle.

Abstract
A safety needle assembly has a needle with a pointed tip and at least one generally planar wing attached via a pivot pin to the needle. The wings are moveable between an unguarded position wherein the tip of the needle is exposed to facilitate insertion of the needle and a guarded position wherein access to the tip of the needle is inhibited so as to reduce the likelihood of inadvertent needle stick.

a hub formed to the needle, the wing(s) being attached to the needle via the hub;
at least one first detent formed upon the hub;
a complimentary second detent formed upon at least one of the wings; and
wherein movement of at least one of the wings effects engagement of a first detent and a second detent so as to lock that wing in the guarded position.

16. The safety needle assembly as recited in claim 1, further comprising:
-
a hub formed to the needle, the wing(s) being attached to the needle via the hub;
at least one female detent formed upon the hub;
a complimentary male detent formed upon at least one of the wings; and
wherein movement of at least one of the wings effects engagement of a female detent and a male detent so as to lock that wing in the guarded position.

17. The safety needle assembly as recited in claim 1, wherein distal ends of two wings contact one another to inhibit access to the tip of the needle when the two wings are in the guarded position thereof.
-
18. The safety needle assembly as recited in claim 1, wherein the wing(s) are movable between an unguarded position wherein the tip of the needle is exposed to facilitate insertion of the needle and a guarded position wherein access to the tip of the needle is inhibited so as to mitigate a likelihood of an inadvertent needle stick, the wing(s) being attached to the needle in a manner which allows the wing(s) to fall from an unguarded position thereof to approximately the guarded position thereof under the force of their own weight as the needle is removed from an insertion site.
-
19. The safety needle assembly as recited in claim 1, further comprising a pin which extends through a portion of the hub and a portion of each wing for moveably attaching each wing to the hub.
-
20. The safety needle assembly as recited in claim 1, further comprising a stainless steel pin which extends through a portion of the hub and a portion of each wing for moveably attaching each wing to the hub.
-
21. A safety needle assembly comprising:
-
a needle having a pointed tip and a base;
a hub formed to the needle proximate the base thereof;
first and second wings pivotally attached to the hub, the first and second wings being movable between an unguarded position wherein the tip of the needle is exposed so as to facilitate insertion of the needle and a guarded position wherein access to the tip of the needle is inhibited so as to mitigate a likelihood of an inadvertent needle stick, the first and second wings extending outwardly in generally opposite directions when in the unguarded position and the first and second wings being generally parallel to one another with the pointed tip of the needle disposed therebetween when in the guarded position thereof;
a first detent member formed on each wing; and
a complimentary second detent member formed on the hub for each first detent member, the first and second detent members configured to cooperate to permanently lock the first and second wings in the guarded position thereof. - View Dependent Claims (22, 23)

24. A method for performing an injection, the method comprising:
-
inserting a needle having a horizontal arm into an injection site;
injecting fluid through the needle;
removing the needle from the injection site; and
moving at least one generally planar wing from an unguarded position thereof wherein the tip of the needle is exposed to facilitate insertion of the needle to a guarded position thereof wherein access to the tip of the needle is limited so as to mitigate a likelihood of an inadvertent needle stick, wherein such generally planar wing is pivotally mounted in a spaced apart relationship from the horizontal arm of the needle. - View Dependent Claims (25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32)
